I used to be like you..I also had first hand knowledge of motorcycle survivors..and some that didnt survive but it is your viewpoint & what used to be mine that kept me from enjoying a lot of years on a bike..accidents happen in cars,trucks etc..I lived in fear until my first ride..after that it is learning how to be a good rider..4 wheelers could take many a lesson from a rider on a bike.
All you 4 wheelers..pay attention..look for motorcycles..and if you do hit one of us..dont run like a coward..treat us/them like you would a car or truck..and stop with the gravel..if you dont like motorcycles that doesnt mean you get to take out as many as you want..many of us have the same family & loved ones you do in your 4 wheelers.
And wear your gear,leather whatever you want to call it..wear your protection evn for a short ride to the store or around the block..it may save your life..and invest in a full face shield helmet..some may want to challenge that one but I can link you to a video of what happens when a bug hits in your eye while ytour getting some fresh air..
Riding can be freedom,trust..hard to explain the satisfaction...riding helped save me from myself!.. | |

Posted: 1/17/2008 3:14:31 PM | ^^^ Thank You^^^ the philosophy you speak of is called ATGATT which stands for All The Gear All The Time, I always wear eye protection, Helmet, gloves, Leather Jacket and long pants with some kind of protective gear underneath, most motorcycle accidents are caused by "cagers" who cant drive a car well, much less a motorcycle..
The bad rap riders get is because of "Squids" who endager others by performing stunts in traffic or riding beyond thier capabilities and/or riding under the influence who end up hurting some "innocent" cager who wasnt paying attention and turned in front of them. I ride as if I were invisible, even if someone turning is looking straight at me I slow down and look for an escape route, this has saved my ass numerous times.
I rode 14,000 miles in 6 weeks from Atlanta to Alaska without incident, sure threre were some close calls mostly due to "cagers" but I survived unscathed..
Motorcycling is not for everyone, hell I wouldnt jump in an airplane and try to fly it.. but yet any dumbass with a fistfull of money or good credit can go buy a state of the art street legal race bike and they hand over the keys, thats like handing a radio controlled airplane pilot the controls to a jumbo jet IMO.. Motorcycles arent for everyone, especially not the meek, it takes skill and ability, even then there is a level of risk involved..
So where are these girls that are attracted to guys on Motorcycles???  | |

Maybe if you come back you will share about your Alaska Ride..If I cant do it I really enjoy hearing about others that do..and thanks for my new lesson today about the ATGATT..I will remember that now..
The longest for me was 4 hours doing local & surrounding areas..no long distance..yet!
Have you visited or are a member of 29 resort here?..some call it the clubhouse..just curious,many bikers come to Alabama for the roads,views etc.. | |

No I havent been to 29 dreams YET!, But I am planning a trip to the Barber motorcycle museum complex this spring, I think they have free camping there
(at Barber) but not sure how close the two are from each other (too early in the planning stage) if they dont, I'd much rather plop down in a cabin or a motel room than have to drag camping gear, granted I had someone to share it with me..  | |

Posted: 1/17/2008 4:28:35 PM | I had motorcycles growing up. Rode one as a way of getting around until I could legally drive a car. Then I was out of the motorcycle world for nearly 25 years.
In the early 1990's, I bought two motorcycles. I don't recall any women wanting to go for a ride. But of course they were not Harleys which is just a status symbol.
As a motorcycle, they are out of date and they are losing popularity ( One source of information on this topic: Harley's CEO in a statement about 3rd quarter earnings in 2007 not up to expectations). | |

My first ride was on a 81 Honda..classic
Then I learned about a Harley Heritage Softail..I enjoy boh of them & I on't look for what is popular..I go with what I am in tune with..what I connect with..not a CEOs statement..anyway..I love riding the Honda for the speed..The Harley for the pipes & my ego fix..just something about a Harley..
29 Dreams..you should make sure you visit..well worth it..they have a new kitchen & great food,they also have sleeping accomadations other than camping in your tent..
You could also check into Cheaha Mt....made it there yet?..and what about your Alaska trip?..share it please..

I almost always listen to music when riding, and I have for years, I took a break from it for a while because Radios would lose reception in the mountains, CD's would skip, tapes would get eaten, Batteries would die, But then Mp3's came out and what a difference! 8 hours of replay on one charge and I can actually charge it while going down the road! I can also charge my cell phone and GPS Too! (one at the time though) I would have gone nuts without it on my epic trip To Alaska, I did meet one Lady while on the road to Sturgis who thought I was very hot,(it was mutual) we pulled into a deserted rest area and she said "You look hot on your motorcycle.." I said, "yea, this gear is a bit stifling in this heat".. She said "No, You LOOK HOT on your Motorcycle.." we laughed it up, did some heavy flirting, while sharing a box of wine....
