| Worship that which you can't see or that which you can? Posted: 10/23/2006 7:35:07 PM | | This is a very interesting thread and subject. Man seems to have an inherant desire to worship something. So many people make heroes for example out of questionable people, material wealth , etc. . Almost like it is part of our make up or DNA. A basic need so to speak. " And Can It Be" has hit the nail right on the head I think, very wise answer to this question. Also film guy, you made a very good point, prayer allows us to see things in perspective, reveals there are more important things than ourselves, a higher calling if you like. Helps to trivialize all the minor details in life that we allow to weigh us down. Thanks! | |

I know lots of people that don't want to worship anything. It's not a need, it's a want. I've done fine without worshiping anything or anyone for about 35 years now. People are generally insecure and most will worship anything or anyone that provides a feeling of security (oh my, that explains Bush doesn't it). I think it's trained into us as children; before we are old enough to have any concept of god, our parents hold that position of god for us, they control every aspect of our lives, and insist on obedience to their rules or we get punished, we want to be taken care of, protected. The same things we attribute to god. Hey, even the lords prayer begins with 'Our father', not 'Our god'. How much more obvious could it be? People want a 'daddy' to love them, watch over them, take care of them, and created an imaginary one to take care of the things that are out of their ability to control them. | |

Look at the hero worship that is so prevalent today, whether it is rock stars, athletes, material goods or even themselves.
As far as your reference to people who are insecure needing something, well , not all Christians are insecure, and I sure work with one very secure Muslim who is quite devout.
This seems to be a common theme among those who do not believe in anything. But it is not something that I have found.
