Personally I would avoid dating anybody with passionate attitude towards ... hmmm... politics or religion
No kiddin'............

There is a close connection between lack of confidence and the passionate state of mind.

And if you truly believe this then you're showing yourself to be an underacheiving couch wart.

"The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions." - Lord Alfred Tennyson

"Life is action and passion; therefore it is required of a man that he should share the passion and action of the time, at peril of being judged not to have lived." - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

"Every man without passions has within him no principle of action, nor motive to act." - Claude A Helvetius

Hoffer was a pseudo-intellectual that even my High School journalism teacher (also an English Lit. professor) had no respect for simply because as a whole none of his ideas came full circle. And from what I've read of him. I tend to agree. Though I am far from being what one would call a Hoffer expert.

Although I will agree totally with the rudeness quote ;)

I have to say that is an odd thought to be coming from a fellow musician. How can you be a successful artist without a passion for the arts?

I agree with Magicfingers. I perhaps could have used another word than passion for this context, though. I meant strong, stubborn attitude towards an issue which depends on person's standing point, world view, personal experiences - aka politics and religion which for me are a matter of taste, sort of. - I like people with passion (in positive meaning) towards their work, research and such; concrete things which are not matter of belief system. Politics is ok when is a subject of studies without personal feelings. - See the difference? Sorry I am too lazy to try to find better way to explain.

What Magicfingers mentioned about the connection between the lack of confidence and the passionate state of mind... I can recall cases in my own life when the person has been strongly political and with really low self esteem, with the need to emphasize s/he belongs to a certain group in order to state "I am better than those others".

ousu:

So what you're saying is that both comments would have been better served by appending them with "... in certain individuals"

Or could it be: certain individuals, aka those who have the tendency to be extremely political or religious have in my experience problems with their self confidence? LOL Sorrrrryyy, I cannot make this in English today; too hot (must be global warming hitting Finland).

Seriously, people can be whatever they want if they remember to listen also the other party or at least not become aggressive when the discussion is touching on their interest field :) - I will go for a safe nerd who loves his Linux system above all. At least there won't be abusing behaviour unless I will bring a Microsoft home :p

Being immersed in the world of Music and martial arts i can say confidently that the most attained and accomplished masters i have met in both disciplines, were totally lacking in what passes for "passion"...Usually displayed in strident, unbending, second-hand rhetoric.
As for the professors slur of "pseudo-intellectual" i suspect Hoffer would have been highly amused. He, unlike "professors" adopted no egalitarian intellectual stance. He was a longshoreman all of his life.
"Passion" in the energy source for revolution, crusades, murder, enslavement, etc.
One last quote from the "pseudo-intelluctual" Eric Hoffer

For it is only a few that can acquire a sense of self-worth by developing and employing their capacities and talents. the majority prove their worth by keeping busy.
thus blind faith is to a considerable extent for growth, fervent hustling for purposeful action and pride a substitute for genuine self respect.

Labeling oneself and/or labeling others seems to be at the core of the problem on the OP and at the core of many of societys ills. I don't even label the stuff in my freezer...I like surprises!

OK Time for ME to clarify.. and I apologize.. I should have chosen words better or clarified sooner. My use of "pseudo-intellectual" wasn't a slur actually. I am a "pseudo-intellectual"

Though not college educated I am above average intelligence in many areas. Genius? No. Superior to anybody else? No. I simply try to know all I can about what I talk about and before I form an opinion on it. And that opinion sometimes changes. Though for some reason in politics and religion that is not allowed. As we saw with Bush & Kerry. Friends of mine have said that I am a real world philosopher. As with Hoffer.

Having worked with several community service groups both well known and not. As well as several years of martial arts as well, I can say you're 100% correct in that opinion.

I think we're reading from the same book, just on different pages.

Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend. - Bruce Lee
