Anybody got a really effective home-made remedy?
Posted: 6/30/2006 1:23:12 PM
(have 2 cats :rubbing chin in evil thoughtfulness) lol i could turn my calico into a green alien!!! anyone got koolaid??

my son is a pickey parker....i have to hide "good" food to get it in him. Fruits have to be in purree or juice form he sucks on them and spits out everything even if its like a fruit cup ect.

The preschool was very good at feeding him apples...they cut them up stabbed them with toothpicks and he dipped them in yogurt. I think becasue of his sensory disorder he doesnt like certain textures against his tongue.

The ultrasound is in one hour im waiting for him to arrive at my work so i can go with my mother is law.

at last we wil get results!!!!

Carol,

I have to ask....is this a constant problem with your son and to what degree is he constipated? Only asking because if over the counter and natural remedies aren't working, seeing a doctor might not be a bad idea, as it could be an underlying medical problem causing it.

Just my two cents from experience with kids!!!!!

Well I have no idea if you give your son a lot of milk and have not read the entire postings so if I miss this...so sorry but am chasing my own two year old tonight too lol...but when I cut back on teh milk he seems to work it out. Also if I give him some of those pediasures, first one goes right through him. Now I give him one a day and make sure he doesn't get loads of milk and he seems to be pretty regular. Good luck, again sorry if this is a repeat of if you have posted anything to the effect that this is not helpful.

Goodluck

Ok, straight off the top:
1) bananas CAUSE constipation, not aleviate it. Nix the bananas
2) The Sugar's gonna rot his teeth unless you brush right away. Keep him/her AWAY from the sweets. Also it may lead to diabetes I hear...

Just look into increasing the overall fiber supply. That comes from natural fruits, vegatables, and some grains.

Look into something like Oatmeal for his morning meals. I use the Instant Quaker Oatmeal. I got the huge Costco variety pack.

Then you can chop up any fruit like oranges, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, mangos or Grapes. Whatever. Give them to him and let him chomp away. They do have natural sugars, but those are better than Corn Syrup or Brown Sugar.

Work in dried fruit if necessary. I know SunMaid makes dried fruit bits, so those are good to give to him. Give Raisins a try. If not, get a box or bag of dried apricots or prunes. Chop them up so that he can eat them and not choke unless he has molars.

Give some veggie servings during lunch or dinner.

I just tried Steamed String Beans with my son. I made a Mayo/Soy Sauce dip and he loved them. He usually HATES veggies and anything green.

Also, increase his liquid in take. He may be constipated because he's not got a lot of liquids. Presuming he's still in diapers, how full are they? Consider hydrating him better?

Also, presuming he's got molars, do celery, carrots, and bell peppers with like a French Onion dip. I get the French Onion Soup Mix and add it to plain yogurt. That's less fat, etc..

Lastly, again presuming molars, Ants on a Log. Do a celery stick. Fill with peanut butter. Lace with raisins.

Cheers!!

To the poster who asked.....no he had never had that problem before. He is usually extremely regular.

Thanks for all the suggestions virtualdude. I do most of those things already...but like the suggestions all the same.

Anyway...my little guy is doing fine now.

Thanks everyone!

Caro (Cayro?) or corn syrup works well if they are still on a bottle or can take it with milk in a sippy cup. Also there are fiber tablets at the store that are natural and they taste really good (so my kids say). If you give them on a regular basis they will stay regular. Oh, and if you allow him to drink soda if you put it in the sippy or bottle and shake it until it's all out of fizz and he drinks it, it should help. I use cherry dr. pepper, it works the best.

For future reference, do you know what those fiber tablets are called? I tried to look for something like that in the store today but couldn't find any....would like to give something like that to both my kids....

I am not trying to knock my children's dad....but I have a feeling that part of the problem is that when they go on visits with him for the weekend, he feeds them mostly snack junk food all weekend. When he brings them back they always have a bunch of lose packets of snacks from Dollar General in their bag. When my daughter was younger it would take me several days to get her regulated again because he fed her nothing but junk food all weekend. I hope we don't continue this same pattern with my son. I had a talk with my ex about this a long time ago and he stopped doing that for a while...but I think it has started up again.

Thanks everyone!

See if you can talk your ex into giving them atleast some pediasures. I know my step kids loved it, we'd put them in the freezer and let them get a tiny frozen and then shake like a milk shake...loved 'em. My son likes then at room temp so you can do either way. Even if they are getting junk food if you can talk him into that, it is something HEALTHY. Or send a couple with them in there bags and make sure they drink them of there own accord. Iknow your little guy is young but if the older one is old enough, (my ex's kids are 8 and 5 and even when the oldest was 4 she was making sure the younger got fed 3 times a day at there mothers). So the oldest might be willing if daddy isn't? I know that is a hard thing to think of...but sometimes you have to do what you ahve to do and if dad sees the oldest doing HIS job...does wonders. Got my ex's mom off her ass in a heartbeat. And amazingly it really hasnt affected Adrianna (the oldest) the way we thought, she is just an awesome big sister because of it I was never able to feed my son when she was here She just got so much joy from it!

Glad to hear he is doing better....it is always horrible when they get that way. That was how I found out that a lot of milk will do it....cut it back and added the pediasure and I can set my clocks by my little guy.

A soap and water enema is guaranteed to do the trick ... and you can use a bulb syringe as it is not hard tipped...do not insert it more than 1/4 of an inch.
The important thing is to find out why. Most doctors overlook food allergies ... for the time being stay away from all dairy products, carrots, toast, bananas, apples and rice. Start him on a vitamin and make sure he gets plenty of water. IF he then goes on a regular basis, after a year, add the items back in (backwards) rice, apples, bananas, toast, carrots, dairy ... one at a time, every other month. IE...add rice for two months, then add apples for two months, etc. If he becomes constipated remove that item from his menu. Every year you can try to introduce the removed item. As they get older, their systems change and could possibly eat it but maybe limit the item. For an example,,,carrots, maybe just once a week or once a month ... it takes time but you will figure it out.

Wild blueberries that you can get from the grocer work great. There are plenty of natural diuretics. Make pine needle tea. Throw a handfull of pine needles in a pot and boil it, drink a small amount and you will have no problem with things flowing properly. There is a plant called winter mint that works great as well for that.

I used to work with newborns that were constipated from medications and we gave them warm milk with dark karo syrup in it...not too much, but maybe a little all day long...

My son would kill me if he knew I was writing this. When he was younger (he's 12 now) he got constipated a lot. I took him to the emergency room more than once because of stomach pains. I finally came to the conclusion that he felt he was too busy playing to take the time to "finish the job". I decided to let him take a book or his game boy into the bathroom with him and I wouldn't disturb him until he came out. Worked for him.

If you can't get them to drink the prune juice (what kid would willingly do that) try mixing it with a juice they like, like grape or something.

For constipation in toddlers and infants -- 2 tbsp. Karo syrup dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water. Then add 1/4 cool water. You can also add a few tbsp. of prune juice for a more stubborn case.
My daughter was plagued with constipation quite often since birth. We went thru some difficult years after the toddler stage cuz she didn't come talk to me about things. I finally told her that if she didn't have a BM every day and did not wish to discuss it with me, then she had to learn to help herself to coffee or bran cereal.

For diarrea in toddlers and infants -- Blackberry Balsam Tea or just Blackberry Tea if you can't find the Balsam.

With school starting and little heads bowed side by side over papers I encourage organic treatment of lice. The store-bought stuff is poison and is absorbed thru the skin. Try using dressing products for African/Ebony hair or just plain ol' Vasaline. It's h*** to wash out but it does work.

I'm glad your little one got regular again...but i wanted to post here in defense of your doctor... he was more than likely going to prescribe colase....which is a stool softner not a laxative. It works by pulling more water into the intestines which softens the stool, makes things much easier to move....

Dark Kayro syrup is also a natural laxative...used alot for constipated babies...and I wouldn't worry about it "rotting the teeth" becuase you're not going to be using but about a tsp in a glass of milk.

Other remedies......hot tea or coffee...I personally wouldn't give coffee to a kid but it's not only the caffine that gets you moving but the hot liquid.

You DON'T want to give your children sugar. These people are mental saying that!

There are many causes of constipation including: dehydration, antibiotics and chlorinated water killing off the good bacteria, homogenised milk, parasites...

Even if you haven't taken antibiotics then you get them from milk and meat that have been fed antibiotics.

You could try probiotic supplements. Bananas are also good since they act as natural probiotics.

If you're using apple juice from a carton then it won't do any good since the apple juice isn't fresh - it's boiled which destroys its goodness and there's probably sugar added too. You could try fresh juice that you've squeezed yourself.

Hope this helps.
