The most exciting thing I;ve eaten this week is spinach and some weird mushrooms. It makes great reading though guys and I have a frind who has eaten in an insect bar and swears they all taste like nuts. I have another friend who was in the army and fried worms for dinner one night...urgh! Meat isnt for me but I apparently ate batteries as a child.. so who am I to comment...lol xxx

Sauteed alligator: Color and Texture much like lobster, VERY rich. DEELICIOUS!
Buffalo burgers: Like a hamburger with a bit of sweet flavor, almost like sugar added.
Ostrich: Came frozed solid in a cardboard box. I thawed, then BBQ'd it. Wish't I'd eaten the box.

My cousin and his friends are abalone divers in Ca. and the only place I've had them. They absolutely have to be pounded to make tender. Prawly with one of those meat tenderizers with all the nobby points on it.

| Strange foods you have eaten, and did you like them? Posted: 8/29/2008 12:05:32 PM | re Abalone ...lol...my friend just informed me I ate it last weekend at the new chinese buffet place, where Mother Tuckers was, ( the hrm peeps , know where i mean)...thought I was eating squid lol...very simular I find...anyhow, that was in the asian dim sum section...all kinds of reg canadian food there however, they do have a wide variety of other culture foods as well...it was fresh, hot and very very good sea cucks are not defenceless, from what I remember by my ex mother-in-law...they have needles like porcupines, work gloves needed...thats why you have to soak them in fresh water for a week, needles fall off...makes skinning them much easier..there was so much at that dinner...I couldn't keep it all straight...but yummy | |

| Strange foods you have eaten, and did you like them? Posted: 8/29/2008 12:39:02 PM | I had an old boy-friend (1977), feed me a canned rattlesnake sandwich once! I was so mad I tossed him over the side of the boat, which scared the hell out of him, since he couldn't swim well! ROFL!
After I pulled him back into the boat, I told him never to pull a stunt like that again! No-one should ever sneak you something you have declined to try. While I agree (at least in theory LOL) that people shoul be open-minded about trying new things/ new foods etc., it should always be consentual.
But actually, it was all right. Tasted just like (canned) chicken!

I thought abalone was a lunch meat. You know, abalone on rye... - James_in_SD Abelone is the meat of a type of shellfish. The inside of the shell is a beautiful rainbowy colour, that when removed from the white outer shell, makes lovely jewelery.

| Strange foods you have eaten, and did you like them? Posted: 8/29/2008 7:09:35 PM | | Escargot/snails-not bad! Venison and pheasant, ditto. I seem to remember Bison burgers from my mom, too. On my own, away from the family I tried haggis, US made which I've been told is different from that made in the UK, and Scotch eggs, hard boiled egg with a sausage coating, fried, I think. Haven't had the legendary fried Mars bars yet, though....Welsh cakes have an odd name as they are really what the British would call biscuits and we in the USA call cookies-great stuff, but no longer on my list due to food allergies....Sushi sounds awful if you haven't tried it, but that's not bad, either, just not curious about the more unusual choices like squid, etc...Definitely no fugu fish! Unless its something I need to eat, too bland food is not a favorite. I like trying new things, just have to stay within certain guidelines because of the previously named allergies... | |

| Strange foods you have eaten, and did you like them? Posted: 9/1/2008 2:03:26 PM | | I tried fried octopus ring's when I was in Spain. My friend said they taste just like onion ring's.It did for the first bite or two, then it became VERY rubbery and fishy tasting.I had to spit it out,it was just nasty! I have also tried fried alligator tail and it was awesome, very tender and reminiscent of sweet chicken.Every time I go to the Boar's Head restaurant in Panama City Beach I alway's get the alligator tail as an appitizer! It goes well with any white wine, the octopus ring's...well,maybe drink a bottle of hot sauce to burn your taste bud's off of your tongue before you eat them!LOL. | |

| Strange foods you have eaten, and did you like them? Posted: 9/3/2008 7:57:33 PM | Escargot--loved it Haggis--didn't expect to, but liked it a lot Sea Turtle--tasted sort of like chicken, see below Squid--excellent when made right, when made wrong, gets too chewy Bison--very good, lean Deer--ok, but has to be made well Cow Tongue--just ok, like any other sliced deli meat Frog's Legs--good, but not worth the bones, and wouldn't eat again because now I have frogs as pets Oysters right out of the sea--I love them, have smoked oysters every week now Raw Beef--traditional German dish, I like it but don't risk it anymore Breadfruit--good but stained my clothes Fried banana chips (the starchy kind)--good, but rich and very filling, very starchy, it's like eating popcorn instead of yellow sweet corn Morels--good Wild leeks--excellent, makes the best potato soup I have ever had Various wild plants, roots and herbs in Ethnobotany class--magical; there is absolutely nothing like eating fresh plants and herbs right from the forest. Water plants from streams in the Colorado river. I forget the names....tart, fresh and slightly bitter.
The sea turtle has an interesting story. It was the first time I had met my food, apart from fish I had caught.
We were in Nicaragua as medical missionaries. I was about 11 years old. My sister and I were at the ocean and saw a huge sea turtle tied upside down in the back of a standard size pickup truck. It filled the entire back of the truck, its shell too large to fit completely inside. It had just been brought in from the sea and was still alive. We were able to look into its eyes at eye-level. Its head was as large as mine. It was the most amazing thing... we both felt very sorry for it and wanted to set it free. Later that night there was a celebration at the main house of the medical complex (the only wooden structure) and we were all served some very special "chicken." It was only later on that week that I learned it was the turtle we had met earlier.

| Strange foods you have eaten, and did you like them? Posted: 9/12/2008 10:35:23 PM | i've eaten sea urchin...lamb's tongue, kidneys, liver of various types, sweetbreads (thalmus gland of young calves...cooked various ways - and I still hate em), goat ear, blood sausage, chitterling sausage, live goldfish, various bugs, venison, bison, buffalo, japanese river crabs, all sorts of offal at this korean place in nyc (I couldn't even tell what it all was, but the stuff was nasty). Pretty much, I'll try anything once...but the worst...
dead goldfish. Ok, THAT was nasty. Back in college, for all of 7 bucks, I ate the goldfish that had been floating in the tank for the last few days. Oh, and I HAD to chew it.
