hey there drakelang,

Lynch's Wild At Heart was a wild, wacky and wonderful little film...and every time I hear Chris Isaak's song Wicked Game, it reminds me of it (from the soundtrack)...but that fight scene that the movie starts with is sure hard to take...talk about bloody! A little like Robert De Niro in Raging Bull.

Bringing Out the Dead is a great flick. The way it is shot really seems to be from the point of view of someone who has not slept in days...kind of delerious and garish and poignant and absurd. I wouldn't mind catching it again.

I think both Lynch and Scorsese are talented directors....lots of great work between them.

Have you seen Lynch's Mulholland Dr. ? Now there is a film I never get tired of watching and watching again...something very Hitchcockian about it...so much info hidden in different angles....hmmmm think I'll watch that again this week.

Thanks for the feed-back on movies!

I have to say that Mulholland Dr. is such a favorite movie of mine for many reasons, I thought I would share some interesting trivia about it:

Trivia for Mulholland Dr. (2001)

~ Originally filmed in 1999 on a budget of $8 million as a made-for-TV pilot, new scenes were filmed one year later on a $7 million budget given by the French film studio Studio Canal to wrap up the open ending which had been left unresolved in the original version so that a TV series could follow.

~ The limo that transports Rita/Camilla Rhodes has the license plate 2GAT123. The same California license plate also appears in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), L.A. Story (1991), Traffic (2000), Pay It Forward (2000), and Crazy/Beautiful (2001)

~ When Rita and Betty go to the Sierra Bonita apartment complex, the name next to #17 is L.J. DeRosa - a member of the art department on the film, Laura J. DeRosa.

~ Betty Claims to be from Deep River, Ontario. This is the name of the apartments in Blue Velvet (1986), another David Lynch film.

David Lynch's 10 Clues to Unlocking This Thriller: (note: I love this stuff! P :))
1. Pay particular attention in the beginning of the film: at least two clues are revealed before the credits.
2. Notice appearances of the red lampshade.
3. Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again?
4. An accident is a terrible event... notice the location of the accident.
5. Who gives a key, and why?
6. Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup.
7. What is felt, realized and gathered at the club Silencio?
8. Did talent alone help Camilla?
9. Notice the occurrences surrounding the man behind Winkies.
10. Where is Aunt Ruth?

~ Lynch cast TV soap actresses for many of the female roles. By coincidence, 'Naomi Watts' (Diane/Betty), Melissa George (Camilla Rhodes), and Elizabeth Lackey (Carol) were all in the Australian series "Home and Away" (1988).

~ The film is dedicated to Jennifer Syme, a young actress whose story is startlingly similar to that of the character of Betty - but who in fact died after the bulk of the film was completed.

~ Cameo: [Angelo Badalamenti] the soundtrack composer appears as the espresso-drinking movie exec at the beginning of the film.

~ Cameo: [Cori Glazer] the script supervisor is playing the blue-haired lady.

~ Cameo: [Charles Croughwell] [, the stunt coordinator, is playing the vacuum man.]

~ The Region 1 DVD of the movie does not feature "chapters"; attempting to "skip" to the next scene or chapter takes you to the "DVD" logo animation at the very end of the movie after all the credits and ratings and so forth. Director David Lynch requested this himself, as he has done on previous releases, such as The Straight Story (1999). By allowing the film to be on one chapter, Lynch believes people will be more inclined to view the feature in one sitting, as intended. Robert Zemeckis also used this idea on his laserdisc release of Forrest Gump (1994).

~ The set of reels that was distributed to the movie theaters included a note from David Lynch himself giving special instructions to the projectionists. Specifically, he didn't want the movie to be centered vertically on the screen but rather to "allow more overhead" as the term in projectionist's slang, that is to let the top part of the frame be more visible than the bottom part.

~ On the way to audition for her part as Camilla Rhodes/Rita, Laura Harring was in a minor car accident.

~ Chosen by "Les Cahiers du cinéma" (France) as one of the 10 best pictures of 2001 (#01)

~ Adam Kesher smashing the producers' car windshield in with a golf club is a reference to the famous 1994 incident where Jack Nicholson did the same. Nicholson's nickname is "Mulholland Man".

~ During the scene in the corral, the Cowboy has no eyebrows. This was done to give the character a more subtle, disturbing appearance.

~ Although commonly mistaken for "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Jan Vermeer, the painting inside the apartment of Betty's aunt is actually a a painting by Guido Reni entitled "Beatrice Cenci".

~ Ann Miller's last full length movie.

Wow Poetica
...I am frightened!! Are you thinking about buying the rights to that movie? I really cannot see them being that expensive.
I soo can't belive a thread for Montreal people and film and I never saw it. I love film and I def agree with the thread that says always take what critics say about movies with a grain of salt, only way to judge a film is to actually see it yourself.
Interesting update:Eraserhead is finally available on DVD. It is totally worth buying. 100% recommended.
Little Mis Sunshine was ok, but nothing special in my opinion. Kind of like a less funny Chevy Chase Vacation meets an after school special. Might want to wait to rent the dvd on that one. Honestly, this whole summer in spite of the hype, the only movie I would say rush out and see would be Superman Returns( total superman fan). But I still can't believe it cost 200 million dollars to make. Pirates, Miami Vice and the Fast and Furious Three can all probably be rented and you won't even miss a thing, you might even get more with all the added deleted scenes and commentaries.
Interesting little movie to watch might be Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth, but definietly on dvd. Fascinating to note that Larry David financed that movie.

...I am frightened!! Are you thinking about buying the rights to that movie? I really cannot see them being that expensive.

OK...are you trying to imply that Mulholland Dr. is not worth much??? LOL Well, I do have very eclectic in movies (and other things)....so some people would definitely look at that movie and say, "huh??!!"...lol

So Eraserhead is finally available on DVD? I would like to see that one....on my list of must-see-one-day movies.

I've been wanting to see Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth too. I have heard nothing but good things about it.

I don't really catch the drift of Little Miss Sunshine, the movie that Drake mentioned before. I guess I will have to go look it up on the Internet Movie Database.

Thanks for the film reviews!

hey zonezone,

I just saw Bon cop Bad Cop on Thursday and I cried so hard I almost peed myself! It was most excellent...and much funnier than I had imagined. Just the perfect movie to see if you want to laugh until you cry. :)

It has the Poetica Official Stamp of Approval....lol

Definitely worth checking out!

By the way, the Exorcist is my kind of horror movie too. I love the psychological kind that puts the mind in scary overdrive like that.

hello POf film feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeshies!

It's been awhile since I posted in here and I thought I would put in a little film review of an entertaining movie I watched on DVD a little while ago.

Strange Days is an entertaining Sci Fi thriller starring the multi-talented Ralph Fiennes as Lenny Nero, a former cop turned sleazy blackmarket dealer who scratches out a meager living by selling illegal 'squid' recordings - recordings made directly from the cerebral cortex of the participant, which allow the viewer to feel and experience everything the participant experiences as if they were there. Lenny is a LOSER with a capital L....and Fiennes plays the sleazy small-time dealer with lots of panache....with a wardrobe filled with violently-garish shirts (think of Bono in his Achtung Baby days) and a never-ending supply of cheap knock off Rolex watches he tries to use to barter his life with to no effect.

Now, I have to admit this movie is not by any means an intellectual treatise of any kind. But if you are looking for a solid action movie thriller to fill a couple of mindless and entertaining hours....then Strange Days is the movie for you! :)

There is some other solid talent in this movie: Angela Basset as a kick-a$$ body-guard and best friend to unlucky Lenny, Juliette Lewis is a raunchy singer and Lenny's former love and lover who is lost in a world of big-time scary people, and Tom Sizemore plays the clueless friend who always seems to do too little too late to help Lenny. There is a surprising bad guy role for Vincent D'Onofrio (of Law and Order: Major Case fame). Gee Bobby, what were you thinking??

I had to admit I had a lot of laughs watching this movie...it is certainly worth a bag of popcorn at the very least....lol

Ralph Fiennes was just too slick and SUCH a sad loser as Lenny and had such great dialogue he was a hoot to watch....he wears this character well...just like the indestructable leather pants he wears through-out the film. lol

Here is some of my favorite Lenny dialogue...the spiel he uses on new clients when trying to peddle his goods:

Lenny Nero: "See... I can get you what you want, I can. I can get you anything, you just have to talk to me, you have to trust me. You can trust me, 'cause I'm your priest, I'm your shrink... I am your main connection to the switchboard of the soul. I'm the magic man... Santa Claus of the subconscious. You say it, you think it, you can have it. "

from http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0114558/quotes (The Internet Movie Database)

Check this movie out folks!

I recommend Fearless, which is Jet Li's last movie. It's Chinese with English subtitles, but it's an excellent movie. Jet Li does a great job of acting for once, and you can see him transform his character from a brash, profligate, impulsive, vengeful young fool into a wise, pacifist, and reflective man. The fighting scenes are great, but the story is very well written. The landscapes and visual effects are very well put together, portraying places as diverse as Shanghai to a rural rice farm set on a leveled hill.

The Departed is also an excellent movie, and dare I say it, one of Scorsese's best ever. The plot is elaborate, with many twists and turns. The entire cast plays their roles well, from leading men Matt Damon and Leo DiCaprio all the way down to Alec Baldwin in a supporting role. There are unexpectedly compelling scenes, like the one where Damon and DiCaprio's characters both pick up their cells phones and both remain silent, not wanting to give the other away. Like any good Scorsese movie, there's lots of suspense, intrigue, and of course, a plethora of bloody violence culminating in pile of corpses.

What was the last film you saw at the cinema, on dvd or on any media most recently???
Name one (or three) favorite films you have seen.....and let the questions keep on rollin'...lol

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Last one was V for vendetta..loved especially the scene with the coroner:

"Are you gonna kill me now"
'I already did, 10 minutes ago..while you slept"
"will it hurt?
"no"
"thank you.....I guess that appologies for what I did.... are meaningless"
"never"

2) favorites? Yickes that hard to tell! sooooo many! for so many reasons!
- Casablanca (for the departing train scene)
- Dead poete society (Looking throught the windows scene)
- City of angels (Seth shopping alone for fruits at the end)
- Hannibal (Opera: Alegra's Dante's quote and reply, also for Lecter's lectures in the museum)

I have mood in movies, love something that elevate the conscience, a celebration of the human spirit, something that make you look upon yourself, and make you think about the society we live in; our past, present and glipse of our future...or probable future.
Ok..true I enjoy a good idiotic movie from time to time simply for the basic entertainment value like anyone!

Hey WordWizard,

Thanks for the insightful and interesting film reviews. Sure makes me want to check these 2 movies out. :) It's been quite some time since I caught a Jet Li movie...and that one sounds like something a bit different from his usual simple action flicks. Now I am curious...lol

Like any good Scorsese movie, there's lots of suspense, intrigue, and of course, a plethora of bloody violence culminating in pile of corpses.

Wow, that is high praise indeed, seeing as Scorsese has already created such a brilliant body of work. Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, the Last Tempation, Cape Fear etc...to say that The Departed is one of his best work so far compared to such classics...well, I would definitely want to check it out then.

Looking at Scorsese's filmography reminded me that he was the one who directed After Hours. That movie was such a riot....a darkly-absurd and wild ride that was a treat to watch. Have you ever seen it? It's not one of his better-known works, but I would highly recommend it. I wouldn't mind seeing it again as it's been years since I saw it myself. Hmmm must check my local video store and see if they have a copy of it.

Thanks for the film reviews!

Well, thank you for giving us all the scoop on films that you have enjoyed, Commonsens!

I missed V for Vendetta at the movies and that quote sounds like it is quite entertaining...I will be sure to add it to my list of movies I need to check out! :)

Well, those are some of my all-time favorites too. City of Angels....ah that is one sublime movie. There is so much light and spirit captured in the whole movie that I never tire of watching it. Reminds me of the best that life and love can offer and of the true meaning of risking it all for something so pure and joyful. Thanks for reminding me of that movie...I think I definitely need to add it to my DVD collection when I have a chance.

Thanks for the film feed-back!
Good food for thought! :)

Hi Po :

I attended the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Saw a lot of films.

The highlights for me were "Away From Her", "The Wind That Shakes The Barley", and "Namesake".

Away From Her - feature film directorial debut from Sarah Polley. Absolutely note perfect direction by the 27 year old Ms. Polley, and wonderful, Oscar worthy performances by Julie Christie, Gordon Pinset, and Olympia Dukakis.

It's about the onset of Alzheimer's disease, but the film isn't depressing or maudlin. There is a good bit of gentle, natural humour in the film, and a very funny, yet touching scene concerning a patient who has fully retained a job related skill.

Not only did Sarah direct, she also wrote the screenplay. Brilliant film.
********************************************************

The Wind That Shakes The Barley - Ken Loach film about the beginnings of the Irish Republican Army in the 1920s. Loach's usual social conciousness keeps this story on the right course, concentrating on the human drama, instead of taking sides.

***************************************************************
Namesake - a small film by an Indo-American director. She introduced the film, but I can't recall her name just now.

A young Indian woman is promised in marriage to a young man who has emigrated to the state of New York. Film begins in the late '70s. We follow the couple to the present, where they are a successful family, with two American born children. The son starts questioning his background, and his given name. Beautifully acted, great script (written by the director,IIRC)

1) The Dead Zone...I actually preferred the Stephen King book to the movie...just my personal opinion!
2) Brainstorm...Staring Christopher Walken too and Nataly Wood...this I haven't seen yet...sounds like a great casting though! :)

rexetcetera:

Good to hear some feed-back from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
I wondered what people thought of the movies that were shown there.

I heard some good things about Sarah Polley's feature film directorial debut from other sources...

The Wind That Shakes The Barley was another movie that generated alot of pre-showing publicity buzz from what I recall...Sounds like a well-balanced film.

I am always on the look-out for some good, small films by Indo-American (or Indo-Canadian) directors. I will be sure to look up Namesake...thanks for mentioning it!

Since it is Halloween what better time to go watch some decent horror movies? Offering up a list of some good horror movies..enjoy all.
1.The People Under The Stairs...Have to love this 1991 Wes Craven movie,a young inner city kid gets trapped in a house where the "parents" have found out how to deal with kids who just won't behave.
2. Thinner...Steven King movie, my own personal fav book of his. Gypsies, curses, gangsters. Hmm since the curse was put on a lawyer, I really don't mind. Joe Mantegna(famous Simpsons voice) does some acting here.
3. House of 1000 Corpses...Rob Zombie makes a movie!! Lots of gore, maybe a bit of a tribute to Texas Chanisaw but still fun.
4. The Omen--Either version 1976 or the new one. Both are ok the older one has a more 70s feel to it. Fav line...said in a weird Italian accent.."His motherrrr was a jackall...."
5. Freddy Vs. Jason..I am sure we all know this one. Gotta love the B movie feel it manages to create and the Scooby Doo like van in this movie. Now that would have been cool Scooby Doo meets Freddy.

Runners Up:Not my favorite but since so many like it The Exorcist; and I will gave special fright kudos to the movie "Shall We Dance" it is truly horrible..Richard Gere as a dancing lawyer..almost as frighteneing as Patrick Swayze's mullet in Dirty Dancing.

Hey Poetica!

Necropost but...

I'm a huge film buff. Some of my favorites are Spalding Grey's monologue "Swimming to Cambodia", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Maelstrom" (filmed right here in Montreal!) - also a big Philip K. D-i-c-k and David Lynch fan.

I just watched "Thank You For Smoking" and much as I'm skeptical of a box that says "you'll laugh yourself silly" - I did laugh myself silly over that film. Also watched "An Inconvenient Truth" which wasn't a huge revelation but did give me newfound admiration for Al Gore.

I've been meaning to rent "The French Connection" for a long time - ranked one of the best films of all time - so that might be next on the hit list, or perhaps another Spalding Grey monologue. The "Deadwood" series was recommended to me as well. I see Blockbuster renting it.

Anyone with other moogie suggestions?

I once spent an entire year at university watching movies. It was tough in Montreal in those days to squeeze more than four in, in one day. That year turned in to my drop out year.

The most recent one I saw was Casino Royal. I give it 4 stars, and Eva Green is awesomely good looking and a real actress, as well as Daniel Craig being a very credible hard man, much more so than Brosnan. The first bit was a bit overdone in the macho credentials establishing, and the card play was a tad boring.

The Queen was terrific as well.

Other favorites include
Casablanca, Eat Drink Man Woman, Princess Bride, True Lies, A Fish Called Wanda, Pulp Fiction, Crouching Tiger - hidden Dragon, The Unforgiven, Klute, Star Wars series, Dangerous liaisons, all Stanley Kubrick's films, the Spaghetti Westerns, older westerns, and quirky stuff like The Coca Cola Kid from Australia.

So we need to have some sort of Fishy Movie Club?

I found Daniel Craig hard to buy as James Bond. James Bond is like the ultimate smooth, polished player kind of guy. Daniel Craig looks like he could be the James Bond from Verdun. As in he looks like he has been dropped on his face a few times, plus Craig seems to have a very limited sense of humor. Piers Bronsnan was great as James Bond becuse he easliy projeced the "man's man, ladies man and man about town" air. He was smooth and polished with a dry sense of wit. Daniel Craig looks and acts like the guy from the poor part of town who might be the bus driver or the drug dealer.
