Hey af895,

Thanks for reviving this moribund thread I started....
sorry it took me awhile to post again in here!

Well, that's rare for me to come across other fans of Philip K. D-i-c-k and David Lynch.
Most people haven't even heard of Philip K. D-i-c-k....lol

I have to admit that I hadn't heard of Spalding Grey and had to look him up.
He seems to have written up quite a bit for TV, including one of my current fave shows -
Gray's Anatomy. His bio on IMD sounds rather interersting...
I will be sure to check out Swimming to Cambodia.
It's been a super long time since I saw the Killing Fields.

The French Connection is another movie I haven't seen in many years...
so long I am having trouble remembering the plot...lol
I think I will see if I can find it again. :)

Thank You For Smoking and An Inconvenient Truth are on my list long list of movies
to check out some time...thanks for reminding me!

And thanks for the movie thoughts!

Hey freelancemark,

That's a very intriguing suggestion...some sort of POF Movie Club.
What did you have in mind? Somthing virtual? Or something real-time?
Would love to hear your thoughts on that!

I did belong to a Movie Club some time ago...but I found the movies
the Group were into to be too mainstream all the time for my taste.
What can I say? My film taste is a little eccentric/eclectic at times!
Well, the movies I want to see are never boring anyway!

You seem to have a very eclectic and varied movie taste yourself...
Crouching Tiger to Spaghetti westerns...how fun! :)

Thanks for posting in this thread!

----------------------------------------

Oh and as a general note to everyone, last great movie I saw was Volver.
A great job yet again by Pedro Almodovar in the director's seat.
Although this movie was a little more subdued compared to his usual cast of characters.
Picture Penelope Cruz as a pregnant nun with HIV....and your assorted trannie fathers,
porn stars, female bullfighters and the like. You just never know what to expect from Almodovar!

Well, I truly loved Volver. I can certainly see why the whole female ensemble cast won
an award at the Canne Film Festival. The acting in Volver was superb and subtle.
Peneleope Cruz is SO much better in her native language. Definitely a great treat to watch.

I also happen to be a great fan in general of Almodovar. I have been avidly catching his films from the early '90s. His movies are real eye-candy. The riot of colours and stunning photography really rock. And here is something special about his films:
he always has the neatest credits on the screen.
If you are a fan of graphic design like I am, his credits are absolutely fabulous.

But how many people actually pay attention to the style of a film's credits?
OK this is kind of geeky of me I know...so sue me!

Just a few more of my very valuable $0.02!
Gee I should bank all those pennies I am putting out there!

Hey Gringo!

Sorry I somehow missed your Halloweenie post...I'll share with you a little secret...
Psssst! I actually *like* watching The Exorcist! Ahahahahahaha!
Shocking I know! :)

As for the Daniel Craig as Bond debate. Well, it's kind of a superficial thing to say...
but I just don't like the idea of a Blonde Bond! Even though Ian Fleming orginally
wrote the character as blonde from what I hear, a Blonde Bond just doesn't do it for me.
I will stick to my all-time fave - Sean Connery - as the ultimate Bond.

"The James Bond from Verdun"??
Oh that is hilarious!

I think Clive Owen would have made an interesting choice...but what do I know?

Good to hear from you again. You know what? I agree Sean Conery as James Bond was great. But speaking for myself I think George Lazenby was the ultimate James Bond, yes, I know he only played him once but that one time...Wow!! Even though to get the role Lazenby got ahold of a suit that was made for Connery and had Connerys' barber cut his hair, he still worked out. If memory serves me right Poetica, I think Roger Moore was kind of blonde in some of the movies(The Spy Who Loved Me comes to mind). As a sidenote to James Bond, they just re-issued all the earlier Jamse Bond films in 4 boxed sets and HMV is having them on special at 50 bucks each, a totally great bargain.
Responding to some earlier posts, yes I agree The Departed was a great film I think it just might get Leo the oscar he wants so bad.
Someone else mentioned spaghetti westerns, they are soo the bomb. The great "3" (The Good The Bad and the Ugly, For a Few Dollars More and A Fistfull of Dollars)are also avaiable in a boxed set for the crazy price of 20 dollars, again at HMV. Another great buy. The lesser known spaghetti western, Boot Hill ,is at Musicworld for 5 dollars, a good spaghetti western but beware the quality was horrible for a dvd.
New movies to see?? At this point in time not too much I would really recommend. The new Mel Gibson movie Apocalypto might be worth seeing, if you can handle the sub-titles. I would however recommend the lesser known film called, "Who Killed the Electric Car" I think its on dvd now. Its a really interesting piece of filmwork.
Totally crappy movies lately..Stomp The Yard stands out. Total trash.

Hey gringo5555,

Thanks for the sound out! It's been quite awhile since I saw George Lazenby as Bond...
hmmm will have to dig him out somewhere and watch again...

I think the movie Who Killed the Electric Car is haunting me!
I have officially lost track of how many mentions I have come across this movie...
Through various friends, TV programs, passersby on the street....OK already!
I know I have to see it!!!!

Now to find it somewhere....where oh where can I find it? lol

Hmmm

A few thoughts on the matter of a film club.
Thousands of movies are shot every year, and the ones that are distributed to Montreal (or anywhere for that matter) by the distribution houses that own the theatres number in the hundreds at best.

They aim their releases to an average person, and are incestuously linked to the major production companies who need desperately to recoup the hundreds of millions invested in prime turkies; and I am definitely not your average type o guy, so I do not like most of the usual fare.

So, anyway, I had this idea of a speed dating / movie date / drinks / chat over - coffee? Tea? whatever, later in an agreed on location.

What about a slack day for the movie industry?

Any suggestions on venue, films to show?

Perhaps even at Concordia, as I recall there was, when I was there, quite a good screening room.

Gringo5555, your criticisms are exactly what I liked about Craig as Bond. :)

As explained in the "Casino Royale", Bond is an outsider, even a misfit in the eyes of English upper-crust and his former classmates at Oxford. He was the orphan, the ward of the state, who's been turned into a weapon for the state, one with a tortured soul.

Craig plays the role subtly and beautifully. I've watched every Bond film at least half a dozen times and, while Casino Royale isn't my favorite of them, Craig is my favorite Bond.

Poetica: I'd LIKE to have a regular, "meat-space" PoF Montreal film get-together - say, once a month?

I'm a big believer films should first seek to entertain, then enlighten - though what constitutes entertainment differs to everyone so that's a bit of a moving target.

Perhaps we could at least agree on films that aren't mainstream unless they're particularly compelling - no major blockbusters unless they're 30 or 40 years old. ;)

BTW: I picked up the "Deadwood" series (finished it, in fact) and loved it. Highly recommended... not with kids around: every 2nd word is a colourful metaphor.

Ok guys....I see there is some interest in having a POF Film Club!

I hear you!

Freelancemark, it's a great idea that you had and suggested...BUT...

This variation you suggest sounds WAY too complicated to me, in terms of planning.
Do you have any idea how much they charge for the screening room at Concordia?
I believe 100% that there must be a hefty rental fee in there....and there is no way that I would volunteer to collect it!

It would be much easier to see a movie that is playing somewhere in town.
Something a little different, maybe a foreign movie, maybe an independant...but something unique, that's for sure.

And THEN, go grab a coffee/tea/drink/bite to eat at a resto in the area....makes sense?

-------------------------------------------------------------
af895, I did once belong to a monthly Movie Club. Unfortunately, their films were too mainstream over-all, which made me drop out.

Perhaps we could at least agree on films that aren't mainstream unless they're particularly compelling - no major blockbusters unless they're 30 or 40 years old.

I like that....30 or 40 years....too funny!
Reminds me of when I saw Singing In The Rain...that might be a good example of that...lol

Now, here is the thing....how would we choose a movie?
We ALL have eclectic taste....and I know not everyone likes my own taste.
I know Gringo thinks some of my fave movies are questionable...ahahahahahha!

Just wait 'til you see Mulholland Drive, Gringo!
THEN, we'll talk!

Well hello fellow film feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeshies!

Thought I would revive this moribund film discussion yet again
because I missed hearing about what movies everyone has been checking out!

Let's see, what movies have I been watching?
Hmmm.....

Well, as usual, your intrepid film reporter (lol) always has an eye out
for the underground film festivals that may be happening around town!

So, the last movies I watched on the big screen were at the
Goethe-Institut of Montréal's German Highlights Film Festival
in the month of May.

They had quite an interesting selection of films and I was lucky to catch
2 little gems:

1. Happy as One (Komm näher)
2. Berlin Stories (Stadt als Beute)

Happy as One (Komm näher) was a film about the state of dating and love
in the world we live in today and about how we come so close to finding love
but how often it ends up being just another near-miss.
I couldn't help but think of how feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeshies on POF would appreciate
the truth and ironies in this little film...

Stadt als Beute (The City As Prey) was a totally different film and a little edgy,
a little bizarre, lots of fun to watch with a killer sound-track.

It was about a theatre troupe rehearsing for a play that was kind of existential
and strange, just like their own weird little lives. The camera follows the lives of a few of the characters around Berlin and words cannot even describe how weird these Berliners were.

For both films, I brought a small group of people who joined me for a discussion
over coffee aftewards, and I have to say the mixed reactions of our groups were almost as entertaining as the movies themselves. We had quite the chuckle after we watched Stadt als Beute (The City As Prey) and the nice lady in her 80s who had joined us came out of the movie and said to us that she needed to go home and think
after that experience...lol

*************************************************

As for the last movie I watched on DVD,
I found an interesting unusual find
in the heart of the Plateau area,
when I was browsing through some used CD shops.
The great thing about those shops in the area
is they always have a selection of DVDs in a corner somewhere
and often you might just find something a little out of the ordinary.

And that's how a copy of Altered States, starring William Hurt,
came into my hands.

I give total props for originality in the movie's premise,
although the special effects of the time (1980) look a little dated now.

Here's a description from the Internet Movie Database:
"A research scientist who believes in different states of consciousness
uses a sensory deprivation tank and hallucinogenic drugs to find the ultimate truth.
But soon his mind-altering experiments get out of control..."
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080360/plotsummary

Interesting trivia:
The movie features the film debuts of both William Hurt and Drew Barrymore.

Watching the movie made me curious about the book and I suspect the book
might be quite an entertaining read on its own.

*************************************************

Oh yes, I thought I would throw in an update about my research
on free movies around town,
since that topic came up in another discussion.

I looked at the major radio stations around town and none of them
seem to be sponsoring free movies in the park...at least not yet this summer.

I did see the screens up in Angrignon Park when I passed by there last month
and wondered if anyone knew of any movies happening there?

The only other free movies outside that I can think of would be during the upcoming
Montreal World Film Festival (WFF) —
Festival des Films du Monde - Montréal (FFM)
.
The dates for this Mother of All Film Festivals in Montreal are supposed to be
from August 23 to September 3, 2007.

Their website hasn't been updated with the schedule for this year yet,
but film feeeeeeeeeeeshies can feel free to check out their site for updates:
http://www.ffm-montreal.org

They always have free movies outside downtown near Place Des Arts.

Here is a blurb about these outdoor movies last year:
"Cinema Under the Stars & Notre Cinema Radio-Canada

Thousands of film lovers and festival-goers each year enjoy watching films
projected nightly on the giant screen of our outdoor site.

These films, box office hits, classics of the seventh art and films
that have graced the Festival's screens in the past,
are shown beginning at 8:30 p.m.

For the duration of the Festival, every day at 2, 4 and 6 p.m.,
Radio-Canada invites the public to see hit Quebec feature films
in its Radio-Canada tent on the terrace of the Place des Arts
on Ste-Catherine Street."

*************************************************

Well, that's all the film updates from me...
What have you been watching lately??

Inquiring minds want to know!

Hey Poetica :)

I often see the latest movies. I'll check on the thread everytime I get a chance and give my opinion on a movie I've seen - remember, just my opinion. :)

* Mr. Brooks - Dramatic thriller with Kevin Costner & William Hurt
--- Boring ......... It had the right element/storyline ... but after falling asleep 2 times in the theater! I kinda thought it dragged on a little too much. It's too bad. As I said, it could have been a good movie.

* Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - Action-adventure with Johnny Depp & Orlando Bloom
--- Kinda Entertaining .... If you liked the first few, you might like this as well. I kinda think they played a few of the scenes a little too long (example - Johnny Depp killing himself about 40 times), but all in all - it was ok.

*Shrek the Third - Animation with Mike Myers & Eddie Murphy
--- Well - It's animation. If your into it - sweet. I think 3 of them are a little much, but at least if you bring the kids .... there's enough "hidden stuff" to entertain the adults.

*Spider-Man 3 - Sci-fi thriller with Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst
--- Way too lovey dovey .... They killed it! I was hoping for another Spiderman movie, but somehow yawned my way through this romance with special effects.

*Wild Hogs - Comedy with John Travolta & Tim Allen
--- Funny Ass Stuff! I don't think I've met anyone that hasn't seen or liked this movie. Even though "Tim The Toolman" has appeared lame in many of his latest flicks, this is a must see if your planing the comedy thing :)

I'll be seeing "28 Weeks Later... ", "Black Book", "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer ", "Hostel: Part II", "Knocked Up", "Severance", shortly and give you my feedback - if thats what your looking for :) If not - I'm a babbling fool - lol

Hi MaleMontrealer!

Thanks for posting in this film discussion!
Wow....I am green with envy 'cause you've seen so many films lately...lol
I've been mostly watching DVDS lately since I've been busy with other things.

I have to admit that I am not much of a fan of the Hollywood flicks usually...
but you caught a few that I had in mind to watch:
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Spidey 3, and Shrek.
Good to hear your take on them!

Ah, Johnny Depp...what female feeeeshie doesn't want to see him
in the latest Pirate movie, I wonder...lol

I have to admit that I have become so bored of Kevin Costner with his last films,
that I haven't been tempted to see Mr. Brooks at all...lol
Your opinion does not make me want to go rush and see it either.

Sure sounds like quite a list of movies you're planning to catch soon!
Please keep sharing your thoughts on them in this discussion...
I'd love to hear all about them! :)

Thanks for sharing!

This week-end I promised myself that I will attempt to catch up
with your movie-blitzing and catch one or two films!

I will keep in mind your advice about Knocked Up
being the perfect date movie...
but somehow I picture all the hordes of men stampeding for the exit
at the thought of getting a girl pregnant right off the bat...LOL

....And we shall wait with baited breath for horror and thrillers
to be served up in this discussion...lol

Speaking of horror and movies, has anyone been catching
the reality series On The Lot?

I think the short movie The Orchard on this week's episode
was THE lamest horror movie
I have ever seen....yikes!

Any other movie reviews out in POFland?
Anyone?
Bueller? lol

Next movie I am dying to see: A Scanner Darkly.
Based on the Philip K. D-i-c-k book....and I love his books!

Movies based on Philip K. D-i-c-k books/stories:
Paycheck (2003)
Minority Report (2002)
Total Recall (1990)
Blade Runner (1982)

Wow, I liked all those other ones... I guess I should look up Philip K D.

Thanks for the info. I never really read much until recently... I read all the Harry Potter books, then I read DaVinci Code, then Angeles and Demons... and now I need something new. lol

Actually, I just thought of something... if you are interested, my sister is an actress in a indie film called Beglieter. Here is its short description:

Desire, keen senses, and a retired TV star help a dog through a surprising and magical transformation.

You can see it here:

Have fun. :)

Hi there citizenoftheworld!

Thanks for your posts!

Well, if you are a fan of the Harry Potter books...
You must be looking forward to both the next book &
the movie which are both due to be out in July!
I know I can't wait!

I also watched your sister's short movie and found it to be interesting.
I was particularily intrigued with the connection to Wim Wenders'
film Der Himmel über Berlin.

Wim Wenders' movie Der Himmel über Berlin
(AKA Les Ailes du désir AKA Wings of Desire) is a movie
I have been wanting to see for years!
He has quite an intriguing body of work.
Interesting that your sister's movie was inspired by Wim Wenders' movie.

Thanks for posting your thoughts in our film discussion!

My sister is totally in love with German culture. She speaks German and goes to Germany at least once a year. She is actually looking into a job teaching English that will take her to Germany for a year, then France for a yeah, then Japan for a year... I hope she gets it! :)

You're welcome... thanks for posting it. :P

I am going to look up Wim Wenders now.... lol

I always love hearing stories about how people stumbled across Harry Potter!
I finally decided to give the books a chance years ago,
when I was doing an internship at a graphic design studio
and one of the partners would not stop raving about how much
he loved the books after reading them to his kids....
I picked up one and was hooked instantly! LOL!

I liked the bagel-eater movie. Cute story, cute dog, and your sister is cute too...lol
Is she on POF too? Maybe the male feeeeeshies would like to know,
after watching the movie!

I take that to mean you have no clue what I was talking about with the
Wim Wenders' connection....that is just too funny! lol

Well, I am a big fan of German cinema (along with other foreign schools of film).
One of my all-time fave movies is Run, Lola, Run.

If you've never caught it, you really should!
It's a real adrenalin-pumping, wild technicolour blast of a movie!
A fantabulous sound-track too, I must say.
Lots of aerobic classes seem to use the music from Lola...lol

Hey, I actually did see one of his movies... I saw Paris, Texas. But of course, I never reaqlly thought of who directed it before. I saw it because the actor Hunter Carson actually was a school friend with my brothers.

^^ Interesting link.

I am going to check out Run, Lola, Run now. :)

My sister is not on here... I tried to interest her in it, but she is pretty hooked on myspace and youtube.

Here is another film that Aleisha did. She did this one, herself... Its a date where she plays both guy and girl characters.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqCd2cClXxY

Aleisha will film anything... lol... she even talked me into a few of her shows. lol
