You just have to look at profiles to see this, people with 3 chins and no colar bones saying they are Slim to Average. Or a particular post on here where the poster Is morbidly Obese and claiming they are a little Chubby.

I'm 6'4". I weigh 220 lbs. The Army says my max weight should be 212 lbs. I constantly fail the armys weight standard, but pass he boy fat standard (having less boy fat). However, people have different frame sizes, I am built like a line backer, and my body is meant to carry more weight. So avg weight is alot of BS.
Yeah same thing for me, except I was 2 inches shorter and a little stockier than you. They'd call me in for a tape test and when I took my shirt off, they'd tell me "get the hell out of here". I had a 48 inch chest back then at 220ish lbs. I was supposed to weight like 190 or something. I didn't lift weights either, that's just my natural frame combined with an Army life.
7 years after getting out, I'm about 290lbs. Although I lift regularly, grew an inch and fully filled out at 25-26 years old. I think that I should weight about 250-260lbs roughly, for my build and frame. According to the avg weight chart, I'm probably about 80lbs overweight. Yet most people guess I weight about 250 from meeting me in person... the only people who guess my weight correctly, are guys that I've crushed on the playing field, in semi-pro football.

The Beauty of a Woman
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen from her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman with time only grows.

Oh, no not this again.
August 5, 2003 · On this, the 41st anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death, Day to Day Countess of Culture Jessica Seigel talks to NPR's Alex Chadwick about a very special Marilyn Monroe fan she visited in Los Angeles, and the moment of glamour she experienced: She was allowed to try on some of the starlet's signature gowns.
"The myth that Marilyn would be considered near plus-size today has become a battle cry in the culture wars over female body image," Seigel says. "The truism that the world's sexiest woman would be fat by today's glamour standards has been repeated unattributed in hundreds of articles and books.
"Nice try, but image activists will have to come up with other arguments," Seigel says. "Marilyn Monroe was not even close to a size 12."
You can see Jessica Siegel here trying to stuff it into Marilyn's "size 12" gown:

20 years ago, models weighed 8% less than the average woman.
Today, they weigh 23% less . . . .
This is true, but not because models are getting skinnier. The reason models weigh 23 percent less than the average woman, is because the "average" woman is fatter. From the US Centers for Disease Control:
Americans Slightly Taller, Much Heavier Than Four Decades Ago
Adult men and women are roughly an inch taller than they were in 1960, but are nearly 25 pounds heavier on average as well, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, average BMI (body mass index, a weight-for-height formula used to measure obesity) has increased among adults from approximately 25 in 1960 to 28 in 2002.
You can read the rest here:

By all means you should feel good about yourself regardless of your weight, but please, no skinny bashing. That's just as bad as fat bashing.

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 9/23/2007 6:00:45 PM | I don't think she bashed I believe it was a feel good about yourself... As far as Miss Monroe she did reach size 14 but we all know we loose and gain weight back and forth... But the sizes of clothes have changed what was a 12 is now a 10. Petite use to be 5'2" and now it is 5'4" the world needs to change thier idea of people. Fat skinny and average we are all here for the same reason to help out fellow man or woman. Without looking for something in return and without judgement. I have a good friend who is very much underweight and is harrassed all the time by people telling her things like stop throwing up. We were at a party and a few of the guys thought it would be funny to bring her a big plate of food over. She cried and was very upset they also brought one for me with a carrot stick on it. Well they learned real fast how much weight I really do have to push around. | |

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 9/23/2007 6:26:57 PM | ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ According to the Internet Movie Database, Marilyn Monroe was 5'5 1/2". Her all time high weight was 140 lbs. That's a BMI of 23, or normal weight.
And that was when she was as fat as she ever got.
The size 14 she wore was a UK size 14, which is a size 12 in the United States. However her size 12, would now be a size 8.
I am also a BMI 23 and 5' tall. I wear a size 4 sometimes a 2. Now in high school I couldn't get into anything smaller than a size 6, and I weigh 8 pounds more now.
There were no size 0s when I was in high school. That's because a size 2 really was a size 2. We are making sizes bigger to accommodate people's vanity.
Pretty soon skinny people are going to be wearing brown paper bags.
Fat skinny and average we are all here for the same reason to help out fellow man or woman. Without looking for something in return and without judgement.
I'm pretty sure that everyone agrees people deserve respect regardless of their weight.
As long as you're OK that your weight may be a reason someone isn't attracted to you that works.
Of course, they also may not be attracted to you because you are too skinny, too short, too blonde . . . or whatever. Everyone has their own preferences.

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 9/23/2007 6:44:02 PM | Sorry Fireknight...but I have elevated (a bit) cholesterol...and I'm nowhere near overweight. I was told to watch ALL fats in my diet (regular, trans, ALL), although I am predisposed genetically to high cholesterol. And it's not a lack of compassion, just observation. I have a lot of compassion, for things people can't help..like say..um, diabetes, cancer, depression, learning disabilities, etc...but no, I really don't have compassion for something one has control over, if one doesn't have control over what and where and when they eat then it is an addiction and needs treatment as such. (not a diet - they rarely work and frequently make things worse) Our culture is *extremely* unhealthy in it's approach to food and nutrition and the kind of food available and highly advertised is pretty much poison to the human body....I won't apologize for that because if I did I would be succumbing to political correctness which I believe has also become a poison in our culture. I think you have mistaken me for someone who dislikes people who are overweight...that's not the case at all. I take each person as an individual and am much more concerned whether they are a decent person than any other consideration. What I dislike is the mindset that some have that they have no control over their weight...AND they complain about it while practicing just those things that are making them overweight. It would be like me complaining that my cardiovascular health is terrible and beyond my control while I'm puffing on a cigarette. It is not a position that deserves compassion.
The original question was about "average" weight...and I stated that I have a hard time defining it, and even the so-called professional descriptions don't leave enough room for the varieties of body types in human beings. The modern view being very constrictive and unrealistic. Do I know whether men know what constitutes "average" weight for them. No. But I don't think they do either because there is no real consensus. There is no real "formula" that works for everyone.. I have a friend, she is a shaman, she is a big woman (200lbs maybe?)...she also walks about 10 miles a day and she's comfortable in her skin, eats well and is happy. She's not average but she thinks she is healthy, perfect, and sexy, for her. Who am I to argue with her self- assessment?

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 9/23/2007 6:51:15 PM | | Well that's just nuts. The WHO apparently wasn't taking a lot of things into consideration. Such as the fact that a man who works out with weight lifting is going to be heavier for his height than a man who doesn't. Muscle weighs more than fat. A 5'11" man can weigh 215 easily and be solid muscle and not have an ounce of fat on him. THAT is not "overweight," and it's sure as heck not "obese." | |
|
| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 9/23/2007 6:58:44 PM | Something else to think about...anyone who has ever bought a formal gown or wedding dress knows this is true...formals are sized way differently than regular clothes!
If marilyn wore a 8-10 in regular clothes, her formal gowns would have been a 12 or a 14! I wore a size 3 Junior when I was in high school AND when I got married, and both my prom dresses were size 7, and so was my wedding dress!
So if the clothes being referred to when people say "Marilyn wore a size 14" were her formals, sorry folks, those don't count as her regular size.

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 9/23/2007 7:04:57 PM | There's average (societal) and average (sensible).
Societal average depends on where you live (in my area it's much smaller than North American average, because I live in a small city with five universities/colleges - hence many, many young sleek people).
Sensible average is not skinny/not fat.

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 3/26/2008 3:11:29 PM | | I believe the state of health accross the entire spectrum is sad to pathetic. I am 5'6 and weigh around 140ibs. I would consider myself in decent shape for being 33. Yet I go for runs and play basketball and see a lot of people who are so out of shape in there late teens and early twenties that it is pityful. To you I say congrats on breaking the cycle! There is no secret to it... stop eating junk food, eat decent food, less of it more often and sweat alittle each day! Personally... I think they should have nutrition classes in high school and bring back the participaction exercise program they had in grade school when I was a kid! | |

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 3/26/2008 3:18:30 PM | I had the same problem in the military! Being 5'6... When I joined... having wrestled for years I weighed 125ibs. But by the end of my training I was up to 145ibs of lean muscle. Even then they expected me to put on another 15 ibs! I was top athelete for my Basic program and Combat Engineer training. I also scored 400/400 three times on my pt evaluation at the regiment. Some people are leaner or have thicker bones than others. The same goes for women. But there are so many people who are simply fat and out of shape!

I agree some men lie or deny their body type. But women never do??? There are no women here at POF that are 160 lbs and say they are "average"? 250 lbs and have "a few extra pounds"? I am average... 5' 10", 150 lbs and am told all the time I look skinny.
Actually, about 70% of the women i met online that said they were average, were actually 50 pounds (or more) heavier than they wanted to admit.
Women do it more (lie about weight) than men from what i've seen.

I am not perfect, but i describe myself accurately, is it too much to ask for a little honesty in return?

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 3/26/2008 9:44:29 PM | | Most of the men I know who are overweight know they are so and admit it, at least to other men. On the other hand most of the women I have met online have been obese when they claimed they were average. By the way, average is not normal and healthy anymore. Much of the developed world's population is getting heavier. As for me I do know what constitutes average as well as normal and healthy weight. It seems most of the women on dating sites do not, are in denial about their own weight or are are simply lying about it. Misrepresentation of a material fact is what it is. | |

Not by todays sizes - at the time of her death she weighed 116 lbs (She was just under 5' 6'') The most she ever weighed was 140 and considered herself fat at that weight
Edit: Sorry, Alexadria, I just noticed you already covered this

I was watching this very interesting show the other day that talks about weight and weight issues. All the info came from the WHO.
Now apparently, the average male (30 – 39) is 5’11” tall and his weight should be 146 – 179 lbs to be considered average. 180-214lbs is considered overweight. If they are over 215 lbs they are considered obese.
What really concerned me was the fact that, unless they were in the morbidly obese category, most of the men (who were in fact obese) on this show thought that they were “average”.
Since obesity is the cause of type 2 diabetes and is a major player in heart disease and stroke, I was concerned enough to post this.
Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight?
Those averages are for an average male who has never seen inside of a gym. Those averages also don't consider if the weight is fat or muscle. Can you imagine a 5'11 dude at 146 lbs? C'mon ladies, you really want your guy to be 5'11 and 146 lbs?

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 3/26/2008 10:22:18 PM | OH!!! You were watching a SHOW. God knows that television always provides the correct answers. Yes, that is the sound of me shaking my head and rolling my eyes at you. Naivity is hilarious sometimes. Honestly, if you take a look at professional athletes you may understand the point. Lets go NFL. Shaun Alexander of the Seattle Seahawks is 5'11" and weighs 228. He's almost morbidly obese according to your "SHOW". I love the addage that "if its on Oprah, it must be true". What you were probably seeing was a BMI rating, which has been proven to be inaccurate because it doesn't take muscle mass into account. Have you ever seen the strong man competitions on ESPN/TSN? Those guys are in the 300 to 400 lbs range and aren't that tall...yet they are not obese.
Next...you don't have to be obese to have/get type 2 diabetes. So there goes another point in your argument.
Finally, in defining "average" most girls are culprits of misinterpretting this classification. When a 5 ft 6" woman describes herself as "average" and then shows up at a whopping 180 lbs...there is some misunderstanding there. Obviously this post has seen its fair share of responses...next time, maybe talk to a respectable dietician before posting.

| Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight? Posted: 3/27/2008 8:02:19 PM | I'm 5'11"-6'0"-ish and I weight 226lbs..and I can tell you I'm not morbidly obese, my arms are not hanging with fat and my face isn't hanging with "chicken waddle", sure I have the "beer belly" thing going a bit but I'm far from Obese. My legs are toned as with my arms. Nor do I have type 2 diabetes. It's called I don't exercise enough so I ened up collecting some weight on my torso as opposed to other place of my body. I think that has to do with genetics of being a guy. Also the average has changed over the years, and you ceretainly can't be getting all your info from television. Just look at society as a whole, people are bigger than they have been in the past, so there for the term average has had to shift withthe ever changing wasit lines of the society. But i do agree with some peoples posts, that there are people whom choose slim/average and do themself have "chicken waddle" and rolls of skin all about their bodies. But the question you have to ask is..Does it really matter if you see a pic and someone put slim/average adn they appear to not be... your only concern is with do you or do you not want to still message them. Whats next people will ahve to prove the amount of income they earn and have it posted on their profiles and have people say well person X works at wal-mart theres no way they make X amount of dollars as their profile states.
