Do men just not know what really constitutes an average weight?

well i have to say i dont like skinny men. Im not skinny myself and us girls are programed that if we are not skinny we are not attractive. I think everyone should stop believing the propaganda that the media is feeding us. Be happy in the skin we are in, everyone is beautifull both in side and out. If we all looked the same what a boring place the world would be. Nothing like being held when your sick and resting your head on soft flesh, bones wouldnt be comforting at all. Well thats my view any just be pround of who you are!!!!

Weight or BMI cannot be used reliably as a measure of percentage body fat. Along with the three main different body types there is also conditioning and training to consider. You could have a guy at 5'8" and 185 yet having less than 5% body fat or 6'0" same weight yet have more body fat.

That would be why it drives me batty when a woman goes on about her own weight. If she's fit and isn't carrying too high a percentage bodyfat ratio why would I think she could stand to lose 5 Lbs?

you can't really go by that chart I'm 5"8 268 poounds sure I have alot of weight to lose still I've lost about 52 pounds of fat since last January, if I was slim and I mean slim as hell I'd be about 210 and I don't even work out with weights if I was even close to that chart I'd be underweight. Never follow guidelines like these they are crap. Just go by body fat % that's it.

this is average for all women, and there is average for american women (yes this applies to american men too). And american women are on average are quite a bit heavier than the rest of the world. I think you're getting caught up on semantics, when a guy says "average body" he means "not fat" or "not really skinny" in my experience.

The vast number of male profiles I come across list themselves as "average" when they're actually overweight. Typically by a good 30-40 pounds. Many men will tout "I've got a lot of muscle", which I don't disagree with...they just happen to have a lot of fat too. The ones that say "few extra pounds" are typically obese. *shrug* I honestly don't care what someone tells themselves to feel good about themselves, so long as they're not a hypocrite. I find it unfortunate that many who complain about the rampant obesity amongst women are "fluffy" themselves, but only focus on the muscle under the fat. The nation's health isn't going to get any better with so many people in denial. :\

AVERAGE weight and PROPER-PROPORTIONATE weight are not the same thing, and you have already confused the two in your post.

I thought that these days the average weight would be higher. But that doesn't mean it's any more healthy to be 200 lbs.

I think society is more accepting of fat men compared to fat women, which is unfortunate.

I think basing this sort of thing on BMI alone is not correct in the slightest. According to the BMI chart, I was "obese" (just over a bmi of 30) a month ago at 15% bodyfat. American footballers, rugby players, wrestlers and bodybuilders will all fall into this category or above. BMI really needs to be thrown out the window and rethought.

Not necessary. Just ask many men who were obese until they lost a lot of weight. They will tell you the difference in how they were treated before and after their weight loss.

ok while not a guy i feel like i have to respond. first off i have seen men who weigh 250 pounds and 90% of it was muscle! he was only 5/10. you can NOT i repet you CAN NOT look at the weight and say that someone is fat. you have to look at many factors. Are they broad people? people with broad shoulders and chest tend to have dencer bones wich would make them weigh more. Also yu have to look at the muscle it's self muscle weighs more then fat. It is not a simple thing to say you weigh this much so you fat sorry it don't work that way there are many many factors towred it. People told me when i was thiner then i am now that because i was 5/4 and 150 pounds i was fat. Come on people i fit into a size twelve and could throw 95 pounds!!!!!!!!

The only way to really figure out the optimum weight for any person is not only to take height and weight and age into account but also body type, ie: ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph.. also someone who works out is going to have denser bones and muscle than someone who doesn't, and may actually weigh more than the optimum which is calculated across the board..

The charts with "average" weight are pretty much malarkey, as I am an ectomorph and the "average" weight stated on those charts are 20 - 40lbs too heavy for my bone structure. Even BMI is skewed by not taking bone structure into account.

So no.. and "average" is just a mean and really has no bearing on "healthy" because as north americans get fatter, the "average" goes up.

Just some info.

You all can say what you want, I know I will never be able to get to the recommended BMI for my height of 6'7" no matter what I try or do. I am overweight but I am losing it so I'm not going to give up, I am a few extra pounds and I plan on losing it. I am now 310 lbs and undoubtedly have a large frame. According to the BMI sites that I have found I am obese and need to get under 230 lbs, which is insane.

I am however 190 lbs less than I was 4 years ago but 20 lbs more than I was two years ago. If you are having trouble with the math I did get down to 290 lbs two years ago and I will be happy if i can get to 280... but 220? pfft... that's insane!!!

Oh and I just had a complete physical and my results came up that I am perfectly healthy. In fact when I was 500 lbs my doctor used to say that I had a good blood pressure for someone my size... now he's happy to report that I have a great blood pressure for an average sized man!!!

I went to the web site below for a “benchmark” and recommendations on “ideal” (as opposed to “average”) weight from a medical/health viewpoint.
http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
At 5’8” and 163 lb, with a BMI of 24.8, I am near the top end of the World Health Organization (WHO) “normal” range of 19 - 25. My current weight puts me at the 30th percentile of men my height and age (i.e. 70% are heavier) / (50th percentile = ”average”/median). The recommended “ideal” for men my age and height is 157 lb. corresponding to the 23rd percentile; that’s my target for this cycling season.
For a female my age and a height of 5’2” the ideal weight is 129 lb.; she would be at the 23rd percentile of females her height and age.
A combination of healthy diet and participation in recreational sports should be sufficient to maintain these levels. Many of the women I encounter in recreational cycling and ballroom dancing appear able to maintain near ideal BMIs; and they look good to me in either cycling spandex or a dance costume!!
