| legal street racing? Posted: 7/12/2006 5:16:27 PM | I hate to point out that in 2005 in the GTA 229 people died in traffic accidents. That's one year so say an average of 190 per year over 6 years thats 1140 people dead due to traffic accidents but we seem to be worried about 30 in 6 years due to racing wich is approximately 2% of the total deaths due to cars. Personally id be fare more afraid of a driver making a bad decision than of someone street racing. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_PrintFriendly&c=Article&cid=1136328631406&call_pageid=971358637177
I would be more motivated to go to cayuga(Toronto motorsports park) if the gardiner/QEW wasnt jammed on friday nights.Going to the track is far better because you get real world data on how your car is preforming and if you modifications or tune up helped or not. So I am all in favor of going to the track but it would be nice to be more convenient. what if you live in Barrie or somewhere north its 3hrs plus.
The best option is probably to stop fighting the socalist agenda and join the collective and participate in only Government approved after work activities . Its time to lighten up and enjoy the summer with our cars maybe haze the tires a few times

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/13/2006 6:21:42 PM | well,
This issue is a really close personal issue to me.
A story, (I know bare with me here)
If you view my profile, you will see my SHOW CAR. not RACE CAR. I only drive it on weekends to and from car shows, and I dont speed. (on the highway I stay in the granny lane)
anyways, last year, I was going to a show in guelph and prior to the show we were assured by the show organizers that the local police department WOULD NOT be idiots unless we were being dumb on the roads.
They LIED
I was in a line of camaros (mine included) and just minding my own business, cruising in the middle (behind a heavily modded ls1 4th gen...newer camaro) and infront of an older camaro with bald tires, 10 day and a cracked window. Well, the cop pulled me over (went right by the car that surely wasnt street legal) and pulled me over because my car LOOKED like a street racer
Anyways, he told me that they were doing inspections (random) and they wanted me to go through it. I agreed. I drove nearly 15 mins to the inspection station where I see 20 cars with no plates on them. (ranging from ages 20 years old to almost brand new).
The MTO procedes to check my car over and tries to get me for everything he can (i have air ride and he said that was illegal, until I showed him my mechanics license)
He then proceded to tell me that my car is too flashy for the road and that my paint job needs to be dulled down alot (sponsored by meguiars)
He tells me to to pull my ebrake which i have no problem doing, and as i set it he tells me to put the car in gear and step on the gas. I said, the car will go forward, why would I want to do that? He pipes up right away, if the ebrake is good, it wont move.. I laugh at the guy because he clearly has no clue, but do the test. Of course the car moves (it has almost 400 ft lbs of torque)
he tells me to try it again (i try it 3 times) and it doesnt hold the car. I tell him that even with 3 ebrakes the car will still move, an ebrake is meant to be used for parking purposes not to stop the car. He didnt listen and writes me a $110 ticket.
He tells me to use my horn and as i do, the bloody thing sticks and stays on. I have to cut the wires to get it to stop, strike two he says.
Final straw was when the wiper jets dont work. I explain to him, that i dont drive the car in the rain. Hes like I dont care, it is part of the safety (agreed it is) but its not a big issue.
As he begins to pull my plates, im on the phone with my buddy who is another licensed mechanic and he tells me that hes out of town. So im pretty much sol..
Remember those cars i told you about when i rolled in? 1 is a 2005 honda civic and he got his plates pulled because the car had 40 pounds of air in the tires (supposedly too much) and the power steering fluid was down a notch.
Long story short, it cost me almost $400 to get my car home on a flat bed where i could have just drove the car 20 meters to a canadian tire and fix it.
They just want all the cars to be the same with no mods.
Project ERASE was started because some kids in mommy and daddys grocery getter decided that they wanted to race on the street and they inadvertantly hit a woman and 2 kids and they died. Oh, I also forgot to mention that this lady and kids was the wife of a york regional police officer...coincidence...didnt think so
you make the call. | |

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/13/2006 6:31:59 PM | ^^thats a tough story and if you are telling the truth and you do not race that wicked looking set of wheels you have thats to bad. (nice car by the way)
Unfortunately, there are way to many idiots out there who use public roads to stoke their egos and innocent people die. When it becomes a serious enough issue people put pressure on the politicians and cops to do some-thing about it, and like a crackdown on any-thing some people who are not a problem get caught in the x-fire.
I do not think it is right to target any-one unless they are caught in the act of racing. Just having a professional paint job and some modifications should not be a reason to target, as long as said modifications are road legal. However, if they are caught in the act of racing (on a public road) their license should be permantly removed, they should be put in jail, and their car crushed, end of story.
Racers do not own the roads, the roads are there for the general public to safely get around and make industry happen. The minute you put some-one in danger with senseless reckless driving / racing you do not deserve the right to drive on those roads. There simply is no arguement out there that supports people who put innocents at danger by racing a heavy piece of machinery that travels at a high rate of speed and can kill, just to see who did the best job modifying their car and get your ego stoked.
If there was some way the government could create some space for racers to go, and the racers themselves are fully responsible for their actions and it was seperate from the general public and it worked I would support that.
But, the "thrill seekers" who get a kick out of endangering innocent people and still road race should be in jail and removed from driving on the public's roads permantly.

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/13/2006 9:28:59 PM | Camaroguy.. I believe every word of that storey man. I`ve seen it happen. And yes the cops do lie. I`ve had to go through their bulls**t inspections before and listen to them tell me that everything legal on my car was not. I got past the E brake one even though I heard my cable snap when I pressed on the pedal. I pumped up the line lock and thanks to a 3800 stall converter, the car didnt move. Also alot of racers and the track manager from cayuga have asked the opp, moe and mot not to do the inspections near the track because it is doing more to promote street racing than stoping it. They replied with a big NO. I know alot of people that wont go near the track because of their inspections. No one wants to get fined and have to tow their car home because of perfectly legal modifications. I also had a friend that had his insurance droped because of a custom paint job. Things are getting out of hand on both ends. | |

| why don't the MTO put up some signs??? Posted: 7/13/2006 10:01:56 PM | I have complained to my local copshop and the OPP numerous times for not having safe roads.
Highways around here like the 404 and 401 often have sections like a bridge where there is no emergency lane available. mWith any car being liable to break down and stall for numerous things at any time, there should always be some smart drivers that will let them get their car to a safe place.
I wrote off my car because I was trapped between a line of stopped cars on my left, a concrete barrier on my right and a stalled car not 30 metres ahead. the car blocking my view in front of me suddenly changed lanes whereas i slide under the car ahead,
no one was hurt thank god. but if they'd just put up a sign warning drivers that there is no emergency lane due to construction, maybe i could have left myself a little more braking space and avoided potentially killing anyone unlucky enough to be rear-ended at over 80 km/hr
how much does a damn sign cost? whatever, feel free to bug them about this issue on numerous sections of the road, www.opp.ca and 1-888-310-1122
they have a nice little email section so please write them and let them know. my accident caused 3 other accidents, 9 total sunday at 2 pm and thankfully no serious injuries otherwise I could be sued for criminal negligence, not moving my car off the highway fast enough and the broken down chev cavalier whose owners refused to move until police arrived which only took 5 hours for them to finally say move it!

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/13/2006 10:11:53 PM | This issue is getting totally out of hand. I live in Barrie, which is becomming the next target of the street racing crack down. It started last year, most people with a modified car in the city hang out at a spot by the lake, we all park and make friends and talk about cars. We don't street race along the strip or anything but all of a sudden MTO and Barrie City Police swoop in and block off both exits of the parking lot and wouldn't let anyone leave without an inspection. We ended up putting our cars in trailors and wheeling them out to avoid hassle. Its just getting a little out of hand.
Every couple of weeks we have autocross competitions take place at the Barrie Molson Center and they are a huge hit! Things like that on a constant basis or opening up a quarter mile track would generate alot of money and take some of the races from the street to a track. It has to be a give and take relationship with the gov, they are going to make it illegal then find a solution like making a track. You catch more bees with honey than vinegar The racers that I know arnt going to stop. Let's be honest here, they want to start this fight so racers are just going to get smarter, find ways and loop holes.
I am also furious with the media for taking the two teenagers who watched a video game, took mom and dads pretty mercadies, and go booting down a street in toronto and killed a taxi cab driver and make that be the prime example of street racing. Those arn't street racers!! Those are two brats with too much time of their hands and a lack of brains.
I am heading down to participate in a car show in Toronto in August. I can't wait to see what is going to greet the club and I down there!
Ciao! | |

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/13/2006 11:36:25 PM | K, I didnt get a chance to read all the posts but heres my bit.
I was part of a group that tried to get downsview converted, even temporarily, into a track. Mel Lastman said "noise, pollution, danger" in turn we said that the 401 is right there, its a military airport planes are much louder than cars and pollute more, these are same cars that are on the 401, the 401 claims more lives than racers will ever. He said NO. We went up north a bit, found some land: 3Mil to purchase, another 3Mil to develop, the only company that provides track insurance is american and they are brutal premiums in the hundreds of thousands to and into the millions just for a few months of raceing. I know others that have also tried within toronto including some cops. Downsview has been and is still used by BMW and Austin Mini to race their cars around a course set up there as a method to get ppl to by those Mini's - total BS and hippocrates.
ambulances, cops running reds, emergency vehicles, tow trucks kill more ppl in the GTA than street racing - FACT.
OPP stated numerous times that it estimates there are over 30,000 illegal street racers in the GTA and only 33 ppl died in last few years, however there cars in the millions travelling the 401 and GTA roads killing ppl in the dozens everyday but you never hear it cuz its not the hot media topic. So do we close all freeways cuz they are noisey and they pollute and kill?????? you are many more times likely to be hit or killed by a bad driver/drunk driver/emergency vehicle than you will ever be with racers.
a street race takes less than 15 seconds, driving to cayuga abd back takes 3+hours. no one wants to do that for a lil race, its a huge waste, plus the MTO, insurance investigators, police sit there and ticket you to hell, even if you pull a trailer with yer car on it they give you tickets - that sends a message to racers to stay as far away from a track as you can.
Im not agreeing with racing on a public street, but an outlet is obviously required. we build skate parks for kids to go skateboarding in and it works, a track is needed and run 7 days a week 24 hrs a day.
as far as I know, the legal limit for horsepower for the street is 500HP, yet as stated the LS engines are underated-rated at 502-505HP by the factory, this makes the Z06 corvette and many other factory stock vehicles like ferraris illegal for street use but the government alows it
bottom line - its a huge cash cow for the Gov't

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/14/2006 2:05:13 PM | Sunday,
Might want to reword that comment about the emergency vehicles killing more people than street racers... Your comment sounds as if the emergency vehicles are causing the accidents, when infact it is the rest of the population who fails to recognize the responding emergency vehicles that cause the accidents.
And since you put 'fact' after that, care to back it up?
Ambulance drivers specifically have to deal with the worst drivers out there, and the fact that people pay no attention and do not yield for them are what causes the accidents. There was infact an article in the toronto sun last month, where a long-time T.O Paramedic said he has seen people; cut him off intentionally, give him the finger, box him in, and other equally stupid moves... all while he was responding to an emergency code 3 lights and siren going.
I may have gotten off on a rant here, but for you to say that it is a fact about emergency vehicles causing more accidents... would be just the same as me coming in here and stating that street racers all have over-inflated ego's... FACT. (sarcasm)
Please, lets see some info on that one

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/14/2006 2:14:04 PM | addition:
I almost forgot... same goes with the police officers who are seemingly running red lights.
Many times police are responding to a call but do not use the lightbar for many reasons, perhaps they do not want to alert someone of their presence. If you see an officer run a red light, I can almost guarantee you it was for a lawfull purpose, there IS the exception of course. But I doubt any police officer would willingly run a red light without ensuring it was safe to do so first.
|
| legal street racing? Posted: 7/14/2006 4:25:56 PM | wow Camarogguythat sucks typical of how it's becoming a police state here.
Yes there are exceptions I know a police officer who didnt have valid plates on his car, drove it to get some repairs he didnt bother to get a 10 day or any thing like us regular folks would have to do because he knew if he got stopped that nothing would happen to him at all. They are above the law. Those who make and those who enforce the rules can break them freely. But that is a whole other topic.

Might want to reword that comment about the emergency vehicles killing more people than street racers... Your comment sounds as if the emergency vehicles are causing the accidents, when infact it is the rest of the population who fails to recognize the responding emergency vehicles that cause the accidents. I do question that statment myself and think he probably ment combined numbers over the past 6 years with the tow trucks included, but I have seen many accidents caused by the emergency vehicles when the drivers of them fail to remember that around high trafic areas, the noise from the trafic makes the sirens dificult to hear even when right behind you. That one of the first things they tell you in police driver training. Alot forget that real fast and think that when they have those lights and sirens are on that every one can hear and see them. Then there are the police that do not use the lights. They are not just runing red lights but are also driving at a high rate of speed. I understand that in some situations they do not want alert the criminals of their presence, but I have seen the police driving at more than 150 kph on city streets with no lights and sirens for a great distance. That is just as reckless as street racing and have seen more than one fatal accident caused this way.
The point behind what sunday, a few others, and myself are getting at is that 33 fatalities in 6 years is small compared to the every day fatalities caused by every one else on the road. I`m not saying that the 33 lives dont mean anything and it makes it ok to street race and I`m am not trying to promote it, but the 33 fatalities is an inflated number with alot of single vehicle accidents thrown in. Its the hot news topic as of late. About ten years ago in winnipeg, a 14 year old kid stole a car and was joy riding with some of his friends in another stolen car. The kid hit a pole at high speed and was killed. This was blamed by the media on street racing and called the kid who was not even old enough to drive a drag racer. The police responded with a crack down on street racing and started dishing out fines to any one they could who had some kind of hot rod instead of cracking down on auto theft witch is a real problen in that city.
If they really want to stop street racing, they would give them a place to go. They do not need a million dollar facility and do not need all the timing equipment that a proper drag strip has. Just a large enough piece of asphalt. It wont stop everyone but it will reduce it and any one caught will have no excuse for doing it.
But all the police and officials want to do is write fines and impound cars. That generates revenue for the municipalities. Trafic cops are nothing but tax colectors with guns.

The media did not say all street racers are like that. I read every piece of material out there when that happened and not once did I get that impression from any of the media outlets.
I would suggest any-one who races in a built up urban area at a high rate of speed is lacking brains, video game or no video game. Its possible that you and your friends are like the other guy and being targeted unfairly. Its also possible there are racers there and the general public wants those guys stopped and a message sent. The police are doing their jobs. They are being sent there by politicians and the public.
Its obvious that racers have proven repeatly they cannot do their thing safely. When innocent people die that is unacceptable.
The general public who do not race do not hate or care about racers. We just don't want you doing it on our highways. Deal with it, because we are.
I recommend to the people out there who are racing they stop. Next is legislation that will ban all modified cars on the road. They banned pitbulls, do you think they care about modified cars? If that happens then another segment of the population pays the price to, the guys who are just show guys and collectors and are not a danger.

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/14/2006 5:32:39 PM | its pretty sad too, considering I spent the last 8 years trying to become a police officer myself.
I just hope that I can educate the police when/if I get onto the force.

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/14/2006 6:02:44 PM | "Street racing" is a flashy news story that plays well in the media and get the public riled up. If we as a group really wanted to make a difference in the number of deaths on our public roads we'd target poor driving as a whole. I worry more about the poor drivers on the road then the "street racers".
I think a lot of the people on the roads have to actually learn how to drive. I personally like to find a safe place and test the limits of my vehicles. Not top speed but rather braking and cornering, maybe a tailslide to see what it takes to control it. Hell, I can't be truly in control of my vehicle if I don't know the limits.
|
| legal street racing? Posted: 7/14/2006 8:13:28 PM | camaroguy13.... 8 years is a long time, I know what you're going through myself. Have you applied to any forces yet? The racing background you have might be the problem... (speculation as you didnt state how far in the process you are) But I do know that they police boards find out EVERYTHING about you... and I mean everything.
And I guess my stance on street racing is... do it in the places built for such activities.
Cars are weapons... just like a firearm.
If I want to practice with my firearm I goto the place reserved for such activity. So why would cars 'racing' (any vehicle going horribly faster than the speed limit, or for the conditions/area) do so outside their designated areas?
Just my 2c | |
|
| legal street racing? Posted: 7/14/2006 8:21:13 PM | Yellow, gotta agree with the first part of that... it IS eaten up by the media and general public... much the same as EVERYTHING displayed in the newspaper... otherwise no one would ever buy copies. But since it is in the paper, the public takes notice and our elected officials must do something about it... its their job.
The second comment is... hmm. On one hand the "I can't be truly in control of my vehicle if I don't know the limits." really makes me want to slap ya.... that is something I might have said when I was 16 and trying to explain to my dad why his car had a new 'speed hole' But then again you stated that you were doing it in a closed condition, and not on a public street.
Cheers | |

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/15/2006 12:02:39 AM | Armed;
I think everyone should have to take driver training similar to what a lot of the police forces do. Here, you go write a test, drive around for a while with your parents. Then, you go to a license office and take the instructor for a leisurely drive and you're good to go. Where do new drivers these days actually learn accident avoidance? Panic braking? Skid recovery? Defensive driving? They don't because they don't have to! Then these same drivers think they can jump into their car and drive 140kph on the 400 series highways because their ABS and traction control and stability control and airbags will keep them safe. Bull!
Drivers have to acknowledge what's around them and take steps to keep themself safe. The drivers must know how to handle their vehicles well enough to be capable of doing this when unexpected situations arise - if they can't then they end up in a panic which often ends up with an accident.

Agreed they are. Thats why when some-one kills an innocent with one while racing, they should be treated accordingly.
|
| legal street racing? Posted: 7/15/2006 8:37:24 AM | There have been alot of points made in this post that I agree with... one of the biggest is about the guy pushing the limits of his car to know what they are... I do this when we get our first snowfall so I get used to the change in conditions. I'm not out blowing donuts, but I'm out making sharp turns, stopping, etc... I do this in a wide open space of ashphalt down the road and there is nobody around. I had a cop stop me once and I told him what I was up to and he didn't mind. Its true, I'd say 90% of the drivers do not understand how to drive.. sure they do it and passed all the tests, but in an emergency most people just hit the brakes even if its the wrong thing. I grew up on 4 wheelers and snowmobiled and driving around the farm, screwing around in the boat truck and I learned vehicle control. I think it would be a good idea if people had to take a course to learn something like that. I drive truck and I see ALOT of horrible drivers. I get cut off constantly. I leave my 200 feet of space behind the truck in front of me and people in cars slide in the space! It honestly gets me pissed, I left that space for safety, not for you to get into my lane! Last wednesday we have that huge rainstorm in southern ont, I was on the QEW and I couldn't see more than 100 yards infront of me. I had a full load of propane on and I was leaving alot of space since I have alot of weight loaded on... so many people came into my lane in the space I was leaving for safety. Now, as for racing... I'm puting my pick up in the garage for the winter, and its getting a full tear down and re-build... its a 94 GMC sonoma, it came with 167 hp... when it rolls out next spring it will have somewhere around 350-400 hp. And yeah, the reason is so I can go faster. But, its also a hobby, have somethign not alot of people have. And beleive it or not, I'll have the same fuel economy, and it will be 100% legal and pass all emissions tests. But, I am worried about some hot shot cop pulling me over noticing the truck is modified, or when I pull out of cayuga next spring and having him go through my truck and try to pin me down for something. Most cops don't know enough about vehicles to be doing this! You might be a cop, but I think they should have a mechanics license to say what is safe, what is legal. Some things are obviously not legal, get them for that, but you better know your stuff when trying to nail someone on anything else. Hearing these stories makes me want to take it to a back road that normally gets 3 cars down it all night. Instead of taking it to a track to get busted for being responsible! Sure, I might burn some rice (import kids) on the street, but I don't race past the other side of the intersection, and you are only at the speed limit at that time anyways. I have raced down the road myself... we have ALL done at least a bit of a race. The major problem is kids in their honda civic with a fart can out the back right in the city with maybe 2 or 3 years of driving experience going for a rip way too fast for the place they are in. I think with some driving experience such as a skid school so they see how easy it is to loose control and how fast things happen when they go wrong will smarten alot of people up... I've had alot of elderly people create more of a problem than the "street racers"! Take them off the road! | |

I think the biggest problem with alot of the rice cars is they are to slow off the line to give them any kind of a thrill so they hang them wide open for a half a mile or so to get up to speed. Most of the domestic cars, like you said, give it off a set of lights and thats about it.
Last sunday I saw far more wreckless drivers hanging out windows and riding in the backs of trucks waving flags than I have seen from hot roders. The cops did nothing about that. One guy who had a little too much to drink, drove in to one of those construction marker trailers that whiegh about 2000 lbs at about 80 km. It flew through the air and almost landed in a tim hortons parking lot where about 50 so called street racers were hanging out. If it had gone another 10 feet, alot of people could have been hurt or killed.

that is an excellent point dragracer, unless your buying a new corvette or a pure sports car most cars today are honestly a joke in terms of real performance. I also believe front wheel drive cars are also a big problem as they give many drivers a false sense of security because in a real car much of the control comes from the rear (if they have power to them)wheels including steering if you know what your doing.
Yes I think street racing should be illegal but I also think it is complete bullshit that politicians are using the issue to buy votes.
They should also implement some real road testing such as performance driving with real performance cars on the many oval tracks, road course and drag strips in order to get a full license
|
| legal street racing? Posted: 7/15/2006 6:05:48 PM | Maybe not performance driving in performance cars... too many kids will think they are an accomplished pro driver. But yeah, get them on a skid pad with a few different vehicles and put them in a bad but safely controlled situation. Best way to learn is to screw up and learn from that... not just reading in your book before you take your test if you get in a slide do this... or do this... It comes as a snap reaction and you don't think about it if you have real experience... but the real topic here is the street racing. It's more of a problem in the cities. It doesn't happen too much around here too much. Plus, all the car enthusiasts(younger ones at least) we all know eachother, we all know what who has so its not worth it to race anyone. Chances are next spring when my truck rolls out I'll have a few people try to get me to race because the truck will be a mean machine. But, I figure if they are serious they will wait till friday night in cayuga and give me a run. I saw a documentary todat on A&E about toronto street racing. These people deserved to get busted! doing it on the 401, busy city streets, and endangering people other than themselves. I don't see the problem of being on a back country road, middle of nowhere with lookouts on both ends. as long as you don't stay in one place too long, create excessive noise I find its ok. there is a responsible way and the wrong way for everything. Anyone doing this in a high density area is irresponsible, I don't care if you are dale earnhardt Jr.... or for some of you people without a clue... jeff gordon... nobody has the right to put anyone else in danger! Sure, I take risks, I'll fly across a field at 200 km an hour on a sled, or do a 50 foot gap jump on a dirt bike, but I will NOT put anyone else in danger for a thrill. | |

| legal street racing? Posted: 7/15/2006 9:34:34 PM | Well I have been reading this forum for the past few days and all I see is alot of whinning about road racing not allowed in ontario ! Okay now first off where the hell did any of you so called street racing fools get your racing training from ?? Waugh ! Yes I am asking where did you get your racing training from?? Its not a game I hope anyone who is doing it or thinking about trying it . As yep your first time could be your last unless your well trained and know when to draw the line . Now well trained racers will some times do a 401 street run but their always taking some safety into consideration by choosing the 401 . Yeah for one all the traffic is going the same direction . And you craszy assed ones who think ripping around the cities streets like in toronto north end or kw main drag or londons dundas streets are racing with death and you'll be lucky if you don't either kill someone or even yourself doing that. And if any of you care to race each other then hit niles town raceway and pay your entry fees of about $40 bucks and you can race each other still your honda's explode or melt down ! Take it from me I use to race snow machines/street bikes/hydrofoyle boats & super modified cars. And if you want a good thrill race on a track and then your racing . On the street is like russian roulet make the wrong guess and your dead .And besides most of you don't even use protective helmets or proper racing clothing for added safety . Heck an air bag won't save your life if you hit something at 120 miles per hour !!! But one good thing with these aluminuim bodied newer cars at that speed your aready canned if you hit anything ! And yes I have a car thats fast and shes my baby and if you ever wanted to race me its on a track so I know I won't see you kill yourself or someone else when you try to out run me !src=http://www.plentyoffish.com/smiles/icon_204.gif border=0> | |
