Thank you, Julia | |

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/16/2006 7:32:03 AM | What ever y'all decide, I highly recommend that you keep the numbers down, because a huge crowd will overwhelm any of the nicer places, and you may end up having to settle for a bar/bar atmosphere which means heavy (inside) smoking WILL GO ON!
Keep your group local -- that is, that Tampa Bay area. And select a nice place and one that serves food. And a place that has good lighting -- subdued and romantic is fine, but dark isn't. Also, and very important: adequate a/c for a large group, especially for a group who has taken the time to get dressed to party and perchance to meet "someone."
I went to the Lakeland group party and I went in jeans --intentionally-- didn't go "dressed" to meet a someone, but many did. It was a last minute decision, especially since I live almost 100 miles away and knew that 98% of those there would live too far from me anyway, even if we did spark an interest. But the party was expected to be huge and I thought hey, why not. Haven't been to really big party in a while.
The folks from POF -- fishes just like us, who sat this party up -- went to a great deal of effort and time, to get a place to accomodate expected number of 450plus -- with ample parking -- therefore had to settle for a bar/bar. The owners and workers in that place were extremely nice, and did all they could to make the group happy. A group, I might add that ended up being about 150 (my estimation), at any one time. Of course as with any party, no one tells you if they are NOT coming, or if they do, too late to make changes. The place did not serve food; thus inside smoking was permitted and it was difficult to breathe. The air-conditioning was not at all adequate and there weren't even any fans to compensate. Unfortunately, many people who came to party, after a few minutes, turned and left. I was one who left within an hour -- but NOT because of anyone I met or didn't meet!
Several people asked me why I chose to drive so far, what with gas prices, staying over and couple of meals, plus tolls. And I said why not? It was supposed to be the party of all parties! Because of the distance, I didn't expect to meet anyone to date, but it sounded like a lot of fun and I did want to actually meet face-to-face several people who are forum buddies. But staying just over an hour did not make the expenditure worth it. I am so sorry, but it's true.
I did meet some really very, very nice people -- men and women. And the POF folks who set it up were so apologetic about "conditions" but how were they to know? And several were absolutely fabulous by going around and speaking to everyone -- but the place was way too hot, too smoky, and too dim. Do I blame anyone? Absolutely NOT! Except maybe for the owners of the place who did profit last night -- they could have at least brought in some fans.
I chose to go to this party and I met good ppl from POF so the trip was not totally wasted. But I would not go again, unless it is more local (again, that was my choice), and a much smaller group planned and held in a fairly nice place, with adequate a/c, and one that serves food and has a NICE place to accomodate the non-smokers, as well as the smokers. A win-win situation. But perhaps impossible to find. That was our problem and I fully understand that.
In planning your party, may you think about comfort/place/food/numbers/parking/smoking/non-smoking.
And to all I did meet -- it WAS fun. YOU were FUN. And THANKS to all that set it up. I'll see you in the forums.

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/16/2006 11:04:52 AM | The lakeland party sounded like it was too big to actually meet others for new friends, dating, or just hanging out again. The St. Pete one is supposed to be outdoors at Ft. Desoto so no chance for A/C, and the eats will be pot luck style. Hey, there's canoe and kayak rentals there. A paved bike/roller blade/walking trail. People can go swimming, frisbee, whatever. Just a fun day at the park for locals to get to know each other.

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/16/2006 5:12:38 PM | Rockstar and Fellow POF great idea. Ft desoto is a great M&g type of place .Limiting locals is a great Idea but please realize from my experience with M&g I can honestly say it is alot of work and you need to be able to follow through whether you exspect 20 to 50 and get but one it took us many meets to pull a good crowd with a variety of fish.People pitched and helped with food and etc. are small crowds where good and made many friends. Peeps dont go in with exscpectancy to find soul mate that is not the intentions. Have fun make friends. I live in palm harbor and dont think i can make it,butll try. Rockstar if you need help or support feel free to etch a scetch in my email and i will help with any questions if need be. huggs , ciao and excuse the run on sentences and bad editing. i just 15 hours... PS DONT GIVE UP JUST LET IT FLOW... | |

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/16/2006 5:49:47 PM | Hey Charlie, it was nice talking to you in Lakeland last night. I agree with you--the smoke and the inadequate A/C in the building made the atmosphere very uncomfortable. I probably will not go again to another party in Lakeland. Nice to hear your post on POF.

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/16/2006 7:38:54 PM | Great idea!! I have my poles ready! Sound like it will be a great time. I do have a few extra poles if any one is in need, just let me know! | |

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/17/2006 2:24:09 AM | Taxman -- great meeting you too. And perhaps I was a little too critical with the post here about the Lakeland party. With 450 expected to come-- (of course, less than 1/3 did; and of course, very few who couldn't go, bothered to say so) -- so the folks who got it together really had very limited choice. And in that, they did a good job. It seems everyone who went had a good time.
I was raised in Tampa and have been to Fort Desoto Park many, many times-- but it has been awhile since I now live on the east coast. Excellent choice. I had no idea one could rent a kayak there. That's good news.
Y'all have a great party. The people are what it is all about! Not the place, not the food, not the inconveniences (if any), but the people who go to have fun and to enjoy themselves and who want to meet others.

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/17/2006 4:56:34 PM | | OK people it seems like this is a good idea, so I am going to find a place on this Ft Desoto Beach it may not be a covered place with grills or anything great and I will be there, with a few friends and who ever shows up cool. More details will be forth coming. It just makes me laugh that the spot is not reserved but everyone wants to come. Sh** if the band finds a drummer we may have a concert,,,,,,LOL.......other wise we can just listen to our CDs LOL | |

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/17/2006 5:02:31 PM | | ONE more thing for all the bradenton/sarasota people I got an email from someone there that said you all have a "local calender" and have events there. Just an idea for the Tampa/St Pete people to maybe get something like that going. If anyone is brave enough. I know just trying to do this is a pain in the butt. So if there is anyone who actually has checked this thread out more than once and is keeping up with it let me know. I may have to cut out early to go to the Poison show, hmmmmmmmm | |

| Tampa/St Pete Party AUG 12 Posted: 7/18/2006 4:23:23 PM | | We have some drummers and belly dancers who go to the drum circle on Siesta Key Beach every Sunday night. Maybe we can get them to come to Fort Desoto for our get-together. | |
