I made a call to Ft. DeSoto park and got some information from them. Nobody has reserved any shelter under "Plenty of Fish". I put us on the waiting list for a shelter and we are #3 on the cancellation list. Otherwise we will have to do tables under trees...those are first come/first serve and we will need to have 1 person for every table to hold them until everyone shows up. We would have to get to the park when it opens...SUNRISE people. They also have one shelter, which is #10 on the North Beach that is open. If we are lucky enough to get there we will have to keep in mind that we may have to share this shelter with others. The gal I talked to at the park said that this shelter is a "shared shelter" and once again it is first come/first serve. If you people are serious about this and some of you can meet me at the park at sunrise we can try to claim Shelter #10 or at least hold 'tables under trees' for everyone...but I can't hold that many tables myself. Also, nobody has made mention of what time everyone should meet there and if anyone is making signs so all will know where we are meeting at.

C'mon people....a little help is needed here.

Yes some planning and coordination is required. If we get a designated spot or an open first come first serve, I will show up at dawn with one table to stake out a spot. Someone with more time than I have could email all those that wish to come and coordinate who can show up early to claim a spot for the group. A good idea posted by frau Fiestyone was the pot luck or church picnic idea where everyone brings a dish or something. This also needs to be coordinated too so we don't end up with 10 cases of cokes, 25 bags of chips, hot dogs, no buns and no condiments!lol. The north end of the park is very nice, lots of shade under the Austrailian Pine trees. But if this is to happen we need some volunteers. And signage is important too. I will look on the net to find the address for the Ft. DeSoto Park to see if they have a map. If they do, I will repost it here so everyone will see how to get there. Two toll booths to get to the park; one for $.50 and the other for $.35 with no toll to leave the area.

Webb site for Fort DeSoto Park can be found as follows;

#2 of sites listed is Pinellas County: Fort DeSoto Park

choose #2 , click on maps at the botton of the page, this displays a map of Pinellas County with green dots showing the location of all Parks. Fort DeSoto is at the very southern most tip of Pinellas county. Click on this one at the bottom of the map and a complete page with photos and a very detailed map will display. The only thing the map does not show are the two toll booths, one at the begining of the Bayway Road by Eckerd college $.50 and the other between Tierrra Verde and the park-$.35. Hope this helps.

I have a map of where the shelters are located on the North Beach area. I tried to post it here but couldn't get it to work. Shelter #10 appears to be the first shelter that you come to. (all shelters will be located on your left.) There appears to be a "table under tree" area there too. Restrooms close by too. I'm guessing that this would be a good spot.

I forgot to mention that for this size group we will probably need about 8-10 tables. If they call me and let me know that they've had cancellations and we can get our own shelter I will post which one they're giving us. But I'm not holding my breath on that happening. These shelters can be reserved up to a year in advance.

Here is the link for anyone wanting a diagram of the area.

http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_Ft_DeSoto.htm

scroll to the bottom of the page and look for "print-friendly diagram" and click on that.

Hello and salutations all... seems there are quite a few folks hoping to come to this shin dig... I got an idea. While I realize Fort De Soto Park is a viable place for such an event, I've done a little research myself, and also found other places which might offer suitable locations, if the shelter is not available...

example: Howard Park, (Tarpon Springs) http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/06_Howard.htm

Several amenities listed, including (9)shelters with picnic tables, and grills; bathrooms nearby, easy parking, playgrounds for kidlets... (I've been to this one, and it seems a nice place.) Salt Water fishing....

Granted, you would not be directly on the beach, but thats just a short walk/ride away.

another example:Taylor Park, (Largo) http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/18_Taylor.htm

Several Amenities listed, including (7) shelters, grills, bathrooms nearby, parking, playgrounds, softball diamond, open areas for play, and a fresh water lake (not sure about swimming.)

If either of these sound a viable option, please let me know, and I can check on reservations...

I think the whole beginning of this was to get St. Pete folks introduced to each other.
The person who started this made a great suggestion to get the locals to know and
hang out with each other. It's hard enough to organize something like this without the
location changing every few days or weeks. I think to keep it simple stick to the original
plan and let Ft. Desoto be the meeting spot. The place has a lot to offer. If a covered area
isn't available to reserve, then there are spots available without cover. Might mean a few
people bring bring folding tables and chairs, but that's all part of the fun of it.

Once again...Let's meet at Shelter #10, which will be the first shelter you come to.

Keep in mind that we may have to share this shelter because it is the only one that is first come/first serve. Right there is also a "table under trees" area, if we can't get to the shelter #10 early enough. Parking and restrooms are close by too.

I also posted where you can download or look at the map of where the shelters are located at on the North Beach.

Thanks Garry,
The point was for locals to get to know each other, but it has gotten to the point that people from Gainsville, etc and I think I saw someone from Canada on the list, what the hell is that? Lori said we are meeting at spot 10 then spot 10 it is No Tarpon Springs, no Sarasota, no Miami. This is NOT Lakeland part II, we are not trying to get 400 people and we are not doing this somewhere else. I just hope from this we can get a few Tampa/St Pete people to actaully form a group to maybe do things monthly. So if your in the Tampa/St Pete area come on to the party. Sorry to be so bitter but this is a pain in the ass and its been a bad day.

Amen brother. Let's just keep it simple. And PS. They do random checks for alchohal at the park if thins get a little loud & rowdy. Also, for those that don't like rain & lightning, we may consider an early start so we can finish by the time the afternoon storms roll in at around 5:00 pm. Just something to think about.

I'm really confused about this whole get together. Why is everyone trying to change the location and make it more than it was ever intended to be. I thought it was a local meet and greet type of get together so we could maybe make some local friends and do things together. I have enough long distance friends. I am looking for some friends that live close by. I too hope that the locals do show up.

just a reminder.....

I called Ft. De Soto park to find out if alcohol is permitted in the park. I was informed that ALCOHOL IS NOT permitted. Keep that in mind when packing up goodies to bring with you.

Hey folks, I'm sorry I misread what y'all were saying. I read where you did not have the time to plan it, Rockstar, and was hoping someone else would pick up the ball...

I also read where lori was uncertain as to whether availablity was applicable.

Hey, don't shoot the guy who was just tryin to help out, and offer up a few other suggestions, IF De Soto didn't work out.

Creole,
What I was saying about the availability of Shelter 10 is that the park reserves all the shelters but #10. It is a first come/first serve situation with that shelter. Also because it is not one that gets reserved we may have to share it with someone else. But if you look at the park diagram for that area it looks like we'll have some table that we can grab too and the parking and restrooms are close by too.

I'm going to be out at the park at sunrise to get Shelter 10 for us...the gal at the park told me that in order to 'hold' picnic tables we would need one person for every table we want to hold. I'm going to need some help with this or a lot of people are possibly going to be s.o.l. I'll bring the coffee and donuts...just need to know who's going to get up that early and reserve tables with me...

Also people, if you want to do the pot luck thing someone needs to step up and coordinate that or do you just want to do the "everyone fend for themselves"?

Just a f.y.i. note....I'm not sure if the concession stand/store is opened. I was there the end of June and it was closed, store part emptied and limited snacks was all that was there. So keep this in mind and make sure that you have packed all you will need.

I have just reserved shelter #4 for Sunday, Aug 20th. We are asked to be there as close to 10 a.m. as possible. After noon, If we have not occupied the shelter, it will be given away to anyone else. I have booked this shelter for 100 people. With this sized group, the park manger has given us the entire shelter.

Please reconfirm your interest in this Sunday, Aug 20th event.

Thank's Michael.

HELP!

I am confused now. The organizer originally picked Aug 12 as the meeting date & Michael now says he has reserved shelter#4 for Sunday Aug. 20th. WHY ARE WE CHANGING THE DATE? If we can't get a covered shelter on Aug. 12th, I don't see the big deal in meeting somewhere else on Ft. Desoto that same day & bringing our own chairs & tables. If it starts to rain & lightning, just go someplace where your cars are close by so you can get inside. It is insane to change the date at the last second when everybody has organized their schedule to attend that day just because a covered shelter is not available.

I will be there Lori that morning with atleast one other person just let me know what time. That was a good suggestion to get in early and out early, before the rain. If some people get froggy and want to continue the event after the picnic, feel free. I am just going to pack my own food/water etc.
You all had good suggestions for future get togethers, so feel free to set one up, its not like we cant do things like this more often.
