| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/4/2006 5:33:44 AM | each persons type is as varied as as the person.i feel if the person is open minded then their "type"is much broader.if a person is more closed minded then vice versa. If you are open minded enough to embrace the differences that other type of people have to offer and accept them for both their strengths and weaknesses then you have a greater chance of meeting your perfect match.if you limit yourself because they dont fall into your "perfect" type then you are limiting yourself on true happiness on the basis of what is probably a shallow concept. chris | |

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/12/2006 9:29:26 PM | If it's imprinting I don't know where I got my "type" but there was a time that I only dated people who were so similar in appearance I was accused of dating clones. Or when I'd go to introduce them to someone the other person would say "oh yes, we met before at....." which wasn't the case and could be very embarrassing.
Now I find myself attracted to very different types (at least as far as apperance goes) but maybe there is something intrinisic in them that I gravitate towards. If that's the case I'm still relieved I've moved beyond the physical appearance aspect of it but maybe imprinting goes beyond the physical.....?

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/12/2006 11:18:38 PM | It's not your theory. John Money M.D. published that back in the seventies. You probably read it somewhere and forgot about it. He based it on his observation that we tend to be attracted physically to those of the opposite sex (or same sex in the case of homosexuals) who resemble people who elicited positive feelings in us when we were young children. It is, just a theory.
There are lots more things going on as well. I noticed it when I was a kid, my dad liked women with short, curly hair. I looked at his yearbook; When he was growing up, all the women had short, and in nearly every case, curly hair. Those who had straight hair curled it. When I was growing up, the females who were nice to me all were skinny and had long straight hair, which I am attracted to. So I came up with a similar concept of why people are attracted to certain types. But none of us were the first. The similar facial structure thing is based on people from the same tribes, who had similar chromosomes and so had similar features, being safer to mate with than mating with someone from another group. Genetically, those who preferred people much different would have less surviving offspring, so those who mated within the group would be more likely to pass along their dna.
There was a song early in the twentieth century that went, 'I want a girl just like the girl that married dear old dad'; based on a similar idea. So who came up with it originally, well, probably someone a few thousand years ago.
But my own experience has been similar to yours. I have certain 'types' that trigger attraction in me, whether they are personality matches or not.

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/14/2006 2:27:38 PM | So the theory is that early crushes give us this visual imprinting?
Shintaro the Samurai
Zorro
Ringo from The Beatles ..
Peter Tork from the Monkees
Jack Wild, the kid from HR Pufnstuf
David Cassidy
No wonder I'm soooooooo confused as to what I want - and there's not a "real" person amongst 'em.

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/14/2006 2:46:09 PM | I'm sure there's something to the theory. I don't know where it comes from, and all of my dates don't fit the "type" but I've always had a major soft spot for the "cute" type, long hair (even in pony tails), and short slender women. MANY women consider "cute" as almost an insult but to me, it's the best "type" of beauty. The "gidget" type.....more MaryAnn instead of Ginger. It's not that I don't see the beauty in other types and I AM attracted to other types as well, but when I picture my "perfect match" that's what I see......whether I end up with that type or not remains to be seen. | |

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/14/2006 3:22:17 PM | I don't really have a physical type I go for, the men I've had in my life all look really different from each other.
My type is more about who they are. It's just something that some people have, can't describe it.
Like I had a big thing for Constantine Maroulis from American Idol, (don't laugh, I was far from alone on that one). I really did but I wouldn't go out with somebody just because he looked a lot like Constantine, he isn't Constantine and I would know that.

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/14/2006 4:35:06 PM | haha, ^ Christina Aguilera, who I love, has a song on her old CD that goes "Mamma always warned me to beware those Latin lovers, she said I'm not trying to lecture I just care about my daughter," great song, makes me want a latin lover. LOL :P
"I said oh Mama, you seem to forget, I never will let a man control my emotions but when he smiles oo I feel like a little child."
It's called Infactuation. I've played it so many times.

You could show me a million pictures of different women and i would not have a favourite or type out of them all because they would all be attractive and appealing in different ways.
DITTO~~ but subsitute MEN for women
if I were to pick a guy like those I admire...well he would have to be Nicholas Cage, Mark Wahlberg, Brendon Fraser, John Travolta, Robert Redford, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, Jude Law, Tim McGraw, and Hugh Jackman all rolled up into one....

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/14/2006 6:56:05 PM | I vaguely remember doing a course on the philosophy of aesthetics where these kinds of theories came up. That theory about 'imprinting' at an early age is probably in a sense true, but most people change as they get older and that initial ideal beauty changes, and different kinds of attractiveness gets added. There's also different preferences in physical attraction and sexual attraction; they are closely related, but not always the same. It's probably because of cultural identity when we appreciate beauty only inside the cultural ideal; but some people go beyond it and appreciate other kinds of attractiveness.
No doubt we all have preferences influenced by past conditioning, but all that can become unattractive fast once that perfectly ideal person opens their mouth and says something really stupid or offensive. That's why I dont think it does anyone a favor by sticking to just one type of ideal; people should develop themselves and force themselves to find beauty in everybody (doesnt mean we have to find everybody sexually attractive though).

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/20/2006 8:59:08 PM | | What's my type? I'm glad that you asked! I go for the person inside. Everyone has a body, so it makes sense that we should try for the best inner match-up. My type is a lady that likes to have fun! One that likes to treat her man like he's HER MAN! My type of woman treats me well even if I slip and make some mistakes, Lol! | |

| what is your type???? ....... visual imprinting of our perfect mate Posted: 11/20/2006 10:27:40 PM | | All I know is I have rarely been attracted to blondes, or muscular men. I was looking at a photo album of guys I have dated and could not believe how much they looked alike~~it was kinda weird. They have always been dark haired guys with mustaches. Most of the guys I am attracted to are slight or skinny and have been shorter than what most women require. But then again, I always go against the norm. The only common trait was brown hair and mustaches. I am a rebel! LOL | |
