| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/1/2006 1:47:57 PM | Well, Keith is a zombie, so he will never truly die..... :)
I think what may have hurt rock was the onslaught of rap-metal bands like Limp Bizkit, and the radio industry's rush to play all that type of stuff. Now that it's over, they really don't know how to move on. You got Nickelback on the radio, and in turn 50,000 other sound-a-likes copy a sound that they are, and so it goes.
Rock, sorry, good rock, is like punk in this aspect, you gotta dig for it sometimes, but it's still alive and well.

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/1/2006 2:08:39 PM | If there is ever a nuclear holocaust, two things will survive, insects, and Keith Richards!
I think there have been some excellent comments posted. The whole nature of the music industry has changed, and not for the better. The other genres won't last because the performers are all just copies of each other. Everything is just all too homogonized. The true Rock and Roll stars/groups were all unique in their own individual ways. Good music stands the test of time. The Beatles are still tremendously popular after all these years, but where is disco? The Stones still pack the arenas even though they're in their 60's! As long as the old-timers like The Stones and Eric Clapton are around, and their music is kept alive through the good new bands, Rock and Roll will survive.

Exactly. Rock music will never die; it may change forms and parts of it (fashion, attitude and so forth...) may change, but as a genre, it will survive. A lot of people say it died out in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, but in truth, the form of the style changed and the people who made those comments refused to change with it. Which is, of course, totally fine. If a person doesn't like a band, then they shouldn't be listening to them.
As a side note, there is something that always bothers me about music. I always hear comments from people about how today's bands all sound the same. I get a chuckle at that; especially the Nickleback example. Many of these bands have indirectly helped me develop my skills with a guitar and to me, they're all unique and individual bands. Now, 80s rock on the other hand...

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/2/2006 3:08:50 PM | How many times Can they fill me with lies And I listen again Twisting the truth And they're playin' around with my head, O.K. The things they will do and the things they will say But they don't really understand Tears fill my eyes when I hear all the cries For the reason today
And they don't really know even what they're talkin' about And I can't image what empty heads can achieve Leave me alone, don't want your promises no more 'Cos rock & roll is my religion and my law Won't ever change, may think it's strange You can't kill rock & roll, it's here to stay
Lookin' through eyes of time Mirrors reflecting their stories untrue Promises, promises Telling me all of my glories overdue How many times have I heard it before And I'll probably hear it again King of a thousand knights, pawn in a table light Losing to you
And they don't really know even what they're talkin' about And I can't image what empty heads can achieve Leave me alone, don't want your promises no more 'Cos rock & roll is my religion and my law Won't ever change, may think it's strange You can't kill rock & roll, it's here to stay
Even the rhymes that they Give me in times of confession ain't true Outcome is obvious All for them, none for us Meaning you too The things they will do and the things they will say When they don't really understand Fear of rejection, I need their protection I'm making a stand
'Cos they don't really know even what they're talkin' about And I can't image what empty heads can achieve Leave me alone, don't want your promises no more 'Cos rock & roll is my religion and my law Won't ever change, may think it's strange You can't kill rock & roll, it's here to stay
Leave me alone, don't want your promises no more 'Cos rock & roll is my religion and my law Won't ever change, may think it's strange I'm born to rock & roll, I'm here to stay, yeah

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/4/2006 9:36:47 PM | Sadly, I think that Rock and Roll is dead, and has been for a long time. In 1991 a band called Nirvana burst upon the scene like an abcessed boil. Having little or no musical talent, they proceeded to convince Corporate America that we all wanted to hear sub-par music played by herion addicts who are lyrically retarded. Hence Grunge. Granted, a lot of the rock that came before this was of the hair metal variety and had become so formulaic that you couldn't tell the difference between Warrant and Poison. BUT there were many legitimate bands producing great music that was sophisticated AND rocked. These bands as well as the glam guys were dropped from record companies rosters faster than Micheal Jackson is removed from a petting zoo. To fill the void, we were subjected to an endless supply of grunge, post grunge and whine grunge that all gave more than a passing nod to its ultimate progenitor of crap, Nirvana. How many times did we have too hear some whiny, nasal Goo Goo fag whine that the world is crap and that its all his parents fault because they voted for Reagan and he (sniff, sniff) had to resort to herion and cheap, shitty pawnshop guitars with only five strings to express his discontent. That was one blow for rock. The second can be summed up with one word. Metallica. When "Master of Puppets was released in 1986, the rock world fell to its knee. Here was a record that was made without compromise, corporate sponsorship or record company lip service. Nine minute songs, constant time changes and a refusal to kow tow to MTV. Did it sell? You bet your ass it sold. Fast forward to 1991. Same band, sort of. Different record. "The Black Album" simplified their music and made it "radio friendly". It also introduced Metallica to Bob Rock, the same guy that turned Aerosmith into pussies. The first thing Bob did was to teach James to sing! Come on! It was James Hetfields LACK of trained vocalism that gave all the hate, rage and fury of Metallica its edge! Follow this up with pepsi sponsored summer tours and fifteen years and 2 studio records, both of which tries too hard to sound like their everything else on FM radio. Lets not mention the Napster thing...(hey, I got an idea! Lets sue our fans to promote our summer tour!) watching Metallica sell out. Boom. Blow number three: Fred Durst. Like Nirvana before him, here is sub par music...no...rapp...no...songwri...peice of shit who achieved notoriety on the backs of more successfull acts like Korn. Nu-Metal, they call it. Absolute garbage, I call it. Lets take a whole lot of derivitave guitar riffs, add a DJ and a somewhat talented bass player and scream "motherf**ker" sixty times. Lets write about snorting coke, violence, misogyny and package it with just enough hip hop that the black kids might even like it! I don't know if rock music can handle blow number four.....it hasn't landed yet but I think it will be called "Chinese Democracy"....for those of you who don't get it, by a little ego named Axl Rose? | |

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/7/2006 1:23:39 PM | Rock is dead...i don't see it around anywhere...has anyone? i mean, what is rock n roll? maybe the feeling that rocknrooll awakened inside of me when i was a kid has changed...
i just know that as a musician, i look at the bands that are around and i think that yeah, rock is dead...and i look at the town i live in, Winnipeg. and i think yeah, rock is dead...
motley crue is on tour right now and i liken that to parents staying together for the kids...although they hate each other and can't be in the same room as each other...
the one thing that really was appealling about being in a band was the "family" feeling, the sense of belonging to something important...but that family feeling is pretty bogus, when you see all these bands suing each other , suing ex members, and SUING FANS...yeah, rock is dead...i think it died with Cobain, who was the last person to write what he wanted to write, no matter what people thought of it...
no one does that anymore...
dead. bang.
and to beuwolf, there isn't going to be a "chinese democracy" album anytime soon, if ever...and really? after the whole "end of days" soundtrack thing? does anyone care?

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/8/2006 5:05:40 AM | No, Rockers are solid... it morphed from Country and Blues into Rock n Roll and then Hard rock and Punk and now its Emo and Indie and whatever... so many great forms of RnR for people who listen to music with their soul!
Rap and all this other RnB and ESPECIALLY Gangster (c)rap is the death of music in general.. with shallow lyrics advocating gratuitous violence with no motive... kills me to see it... rock has survived through worse though and it feels good to not be the sheep of mainstream

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/8/2006 4:44:39 PM | | Rock and Roll is very much alive! I can't say much for the quality of the new rock but the reason old rock still gets played on the air is because it is good stuff and plenty of people still listen to it. | |

I dunno. I'm not having any trouble finding music I like.
There aren't a lot of forms of music that really "die". Even disco is still around in a way.

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 2/24/2006 7:57:03 AM | The biggest selling bands and singers in the world are rock and rollers... They still sell to this day. All other types of music have faded... Rock still fills huge arenas. Rock and Roll is here to stay, just call your local radio stations and demand rock and roll.... | |

| Is Rock and Roll dead? Posted: 1/1/2007 4:01:12 PM | I believe we have to have more rock. There is too much noise going on: that reggaeton is driving me crazy. I have nothing against it but when you hear it a 100 times, it kind of makes you sick.
We need to have a new round of rock and roll groups like in the 60's or 70's. Where has all the good music gone?. We need rock.
If you feel this way, please holler....
