I am torn by the responses...as I am one of the few in this world who truly have a menagerie...dog, cats, reptiles...u name it I have had it, or currently do...In my eyes, dating anyone that has pets, or live plants in their home gets brownie points. It shows responsibility, compassion and a loving nature, and really in all honesty it shows that they have the ability to keep something alive...

The guy I moved in with let me stay because his dog took to me really fast. He said that was totally unusual and that dogs are a good judge of character. | |

I'd prefer to date a cat kinda woman. I like to take off for weekends from time to time and cats handle that very well.
Dogs are fine if they can take care of themselves for a few days or if it can be watched by someone else (with no hassles) while we're out and about.
I could NOT date a woman who insists on taking the dog on road trips, vacations or weekend B&B get-a-ways. Not cool. | |

I figure that I made a commitment to them first so if it's between me having a girlfriend or my cats having a home (or a pulse for that matter) the cats win hands down.
As for them, I wouldn't go so far as to say that owning a pet is a very good indicator in itself of their sense of responsibility. If it was we'd hear much less about animal cruelty. | |

Posted: 8/1/2005 11:09:40 AM | I'm not a big dog person...I think they stink and they make a mess all over your house and they do all kinds of really disgusting things...like licking their asses and then they lick your face...ewwww! They're cute but I keep them at a distance.
Cats are cool...they aren't half as disgusting although they can be disgusting too...but I'd prefer a cat over a dog.
My preference is no animals...life is busy enough without the responsibility of that too. I hate animal hair all over my clothes...it just ain't right. | |

Pets are nice, but they would take too much time AWAY from each other. In addition, the attention would be shifted AWAY from teh relationship and be focused on the pet, walking, feeding, etc.
In my opinion, it is a "Last chance of romance" treatment that couples run to to save their dying relationship and love.
Unfortunately, most couples I know get a pet as soon as they move together, which is sad! | |

Posted: 8/1/2005 2:41:47 PM | | I for one own and like cats more, they're cleaner, don't have any nasty odor, know how to use the bathroom, don't eat a lot, don't make a lot of noise, and they're all around cuddlier... if a cat comes into my room and jumps on my lap or on my bed I don't hafta worry about getting scratched up or slobbered on, nor my bedsheets stinkin' somethin' fierce. It's mostly an aesthetics thing for me, plus cats never get too big, sometimes get a lil hyper but not crazy, and oh yeah THEY DON'T BARK! (that's the dealbreaker right there) | |
