Do people go running if religion is mentioned in their profile?

As I said earlier, I do mention my spiritual path. Also, I happen to respect Bonnie and Beachlvr. We are all searching for someone we can be compatible with.

I hope the two ladies I mentioned find that special guy to sit beside in church...not all are bad. I just know (from experience) the heart ache from trying to bridge that difference. My last companion was christian and sweeter than sweet. He even went to a fall equinox celebration with me to find out what it was all about. I never had difficulties with him. However, his family almost disowned him and his adult children still refer to him as the "satan worshipper".

Martha, thanks for the info. I know alot of my fallen kind do appreciate the gesture.

I too hesitated to respond, but I think this is a valuable thread and will therefore add my humble opinion.

First and foremost, a response to the OP. I do not "go running" at the mention of religion or any reference to a persons "spirituality", "faith", "personal relationship with God" ... or any similar statement for that matter. Part of the beauty of getting to know someone is the ability to ask questions and get clarification on what someone means when they make a particular statement. If the way something is presented in a profile raises a question, then I ask for a clearer explaination! Simple as that!

One of the most valuable things I have learned is that my interpretation of something someone says (written or spoken), can often use more clarification. I have my own interpretation of a particular word or phrase and it is not at all what the other person was thinking a lot of times!

So, I hope the following will help clarify my position ...

I try to remember that everyone writes their profile with their own thought process happening while writing. Most often, none of us really know what to include in our profile to attract the kind of person we would hope to get to know better. I try to include things I think are important about myself ... the things that define me ... and make me who I am.

Many of us are looking for someone that will compliment us while bringing out the best in us ... at the same time ... appreciating and accepting us for who we are without the need to change us into someone we weren't meant to be in the first place.

For me, it is important to try to celebrate the differences while embracing the similarities with a man ... enjoying what we can share together ... while giving space and respecting the need for individuality as well. In addition, being willing to try new things, being exposed to new ideas and beliefs ... and open to change ... are all positive things for me to allow into my life!

It has been my experience that we get to know all kinds of things about one another in the process of early discovery when dating someone ... usually the first or second date .... and one of them is faith and the part it plays in our lives. This is the natural process of getting to know someone on a deeper level. It is something that helps to define us as individuals and seems to come out in early conversations.

My faith, the expression of it, the place it holds in my daily life ... are all part of what make me unique and part of what I use as a frame of reference when making decisions. I am not ashamed of my faith or the place that spirituality holds in my life. If and when I talk about it with someone or I include it as part of a profile, it is not to "advertise it", but rather to share something that a potential parter will want to know about me.

Chris_kc ... While it is true that there are a number of other sites for christians as well, this is one of the absolutely "free" sites out there ... and I am not aware of the success rate being much different on other sites ... whether specifically designed for christians or not. Just as this site does not "eliminate" people on the basis of their chosen faith, others do not either. Each online dating site has its advantages and disadvantages ... and we should each feel free to choose a site for our own personal reasons. Faith should not need to dictate that choice! (I would consider the response of tennisprinter as he brought up some good points in specific response to your comments as well).

I say, if there is something in a profile that raises a quesiton, why not take a chance and ask for clarification? What do you have to loose, a few minutes of your time? The possible risk of rejection in the lack of a response? If there is something about the person that makes you think you want to learn more ... then I say take a chance and ask!

Thanks for the discussion everyone!

I do mention it in my profile because it is a very important part of who I am. There are alot of other things that I mention also.

I mention it because I want to meet someone who believes as I do. Everyone has to decide that for themselves. Yes, it limits my potentials, but for me... it's best for them to know right up front just how important it is in my life.

I frequently ask someone I'm curious about questions aiming to learn how they think about Mystery/Spirit and its place in their day to day experience.

I want to try and convey what informs my choices, and how that "shows up", to new potential friends. I find it difficult imagining omitting such a fundamental domain of human experience in an effort to offer you an authentic tissue-sample of my Self. One of the great divides early in the history of psychology/psychiatry occurred when Carl Jung asserted his belief that "man's search for meaning" is our primary urge. Through the story we each adopt, or make up (including one that "there is no meaning"), most of us seek affirmation from and connection with others.

As pointed out so eloquently above, words hold interpretation and emotion; only a process of clarification, via perception checks, can lead us through a series of successive approximations toward shared meaning. Chances are if I feel like running in reaction to something written about what gives you meaning, without a subsequent dialog, it's more about me than you.

When I watched the documentary "Jesus Camp" I was surprised to see Rev. Ted Haggard asserting that evangelicals have great sex more often than other distinct social groups. The same week I read a survey stating the divorce rate in America is highest among evangelicals.

Religion is a chosen life style... it's better to share it with others and give everyone an opportunity to change the channel if it's not for them.

My faith has carried me through some rough times! I honestly do not know what I would do without my faith in God.. And it is important to know where someone stands that you might be thinking of dating.. After all this is a dating site! I was seeing someone who I met on this site who professed to be a Christian and yet we saw things very differently.. The thing is I do have a relationship based faith, that is with God..So it is very important to be looking for someone who shares this with me!
Thank-you for saying it like it is for you!

Yeah, especially when it's with same-sex prostitutes.

Now you quit that and BE NICE, SoggyDog! And don't go reminding us about Jim Bakker and Brother Swaggart, either! I WAS tryin' to keep to the high road, ya brat! BTW, a guy from Charlotte, NC told me in the '80's that local people in-the-know knew Bakker's "PTL Club" television program as the "Pass the Loot" Club.

As my born-again brother has to say, all must beware the wolf in sheep's clothing. Good advice.

Being a christian man or woman means we believe in the Lord J.C. ans our personal savior. And that we are working towards becoming more and more into Gods ways of living and being. Many of us struggle with anger, fear, jealousy and on and on. I prefer a man who is more God like. And not acting like a sheep in a wolf's body and wolf's mind and behavior. But, alas, there are many she and he impostor's working at taking us down and out. But our God with prevail.

Religion is highly personal- like politics, or sex. I take offense when someone preaches without asking if their viewpoint is shared,or invited. Regardless of good intent, or one's level of conviction, it's considered rude to force a personal value on someone you're just getting to know.

I think one problem is that just about everyone has had the uncomfortable experience of have some religion forced on them at some time, whether it be on the street or friends and family.I have been there. Some people just feel so strong about it they try to convert at all costs.Today I was with a group street preaching in Oswego,NY. We will ask you if you would like a tract,if not, thats it,have a good day. We feel if you are curious, you will talk to us and if not,ok. There is never any pressure and we are polite and friendly. However,I have seen some real pushy and almost hateful people street preach, calling people sinners and damning them to hell, nice. Oh,and by the way, organized religion is where the money is,not with real believers....just the message

That really is the truth of it,as I have said and as it states very clearly in the bible,Jesus hated organized religion and still does because he knows that most of them are a bunch of phony hypocrites like Jim Bakker and Swaggert

Is it so wrong that I put as my headline that I am a taoist? As part of my religious teachings, we do not force others or even attempt to force others to see as we do. I have no intent on doing this. I am simply trying to avoid an all too common situation with me (especially where I am located) of getting to know a person and talking about going out on dates when all of a sudden "OH you are NOT a CHRISTIAN!!!"

That has ruined more friendships and relationships than you could possibly imagine for me in the last four years.

PS

Taoist belief states that all religions, whether it be Christian, Islam, Taoism, or Buddhist, are seeking the same goal, the ultimate truth. According to Taoism, each separate religion is merely another method of seeking that truth. I do believe that is the best explanation I have EVER heard of tolerance toward other faiths.

**Edit**

I know I'm not Over 45, but I just had to butt into this convo because it was the only thing dealing with religion in your profile and I didn't feel like starting my own post up tonight...

First off... burn the young one above at the stake for posting here!! ^^^^ he he

But most of the time when a man is seeking a 'good Christian woman' on his profile it scares me off. How do YOU feel?

I don't RUN, but I will pass on those that are looking for someone who's religious beliefs are a big part of who they are.

I'm a spiritual being, but I don't conform to any organized religious belief.

That said, love to all.....

If someone's lifstyle includes a desire to share an active relationship with god ( or the buddha or naiads, for that matter), then I appreciate their mentioning it early. I don't go running, but simple saunter away.

i would say the answer to that question depends on the person and how deep their beliefs, and i am not a bible thumper, a reverend yes, but everyone has to decide whats right for them, you cannot force religion or beliefs on anyone else, funny question, ladies say they want a christian man, but evidently not that christian. no one is at fault,, everyone has the freedom of choice, from atheists to every religion on the planet, i have even heard , everyone needs to believe in something, i believe i will have another beer, do i get offended, no,, its not mine to judge another.

How about trying to select a date by their political preferences? It kinda leaves out a lot of other qualifying attributes.

Well said, grignon:
I appreciate their mentioning it early

Personally, I have little respect for most of the major religions (though nods are due to Taoism & Buddhism for not staging wars, crusades, inquisitions, witch hunts or jihads in the "name of God"). But, as some have mentioned, there are good folks in virtually every group.

If religion (as opposed to spirituality) is VERY important in someone's life, chances are we wouldn't get along for long, as anything but the most casual of friends... so it is a good thing when they mention it prominently-- it saves us both a lot of time and stress. I may still contact them to continue a discussion, etc., and I would certainly respect their right to believe what they may, but we would both be well aware that romance would be out of the question.

I call that efficient communication, and good diplomacy.
