I'm a health professional who works with allergies, especially food allergies. I am seeing a common thread running through here--is anyone else?
FYI to the poster who asked about fruit allergies: : In Spain , peach is the #1 food allergy.
Those of you in the UK have really the best (as in most complete) food allergy information available to you. Our Dr's here in the States are so far behind the times that some of them don't even get the IgG mediated reactions (delayed reactions). Yet these are the ones that make our lives miserable.
I often say there are worse things than dying; some of us have to stay here and learn to work with all of these restrictions NO FUN!!! I've gotten better at it and more creative, but maaaaan, what a difficult thing it has been to learn to eat something that tastes good, AND stay well. And here I am a professional who helps other people. It's not easy to get it right. You have to get a PhD in label reading with some of these things.
Fish is a good case in point. I'm a Registered Dietetian. I work with food all the time. So when I was told I had a fish allergy, it was no biggie right? See fish, dont' eat fish. Not so much. Turns out any time you see the words "Natural flavors", fish oil could have been added. Obviously they won't have added it to fruity dishes, but any savory dish can have it added and undeclared if it's use is only to intensify flavors. And how it intensifies flavors (ever added Worcestershire sauce or N'uk Mam to anything ?)
Enough school for today. I have tons of food allergies, information over which I fought the Dr. After all, in traditional western medical training, "there are only a few food allergies and they happen to children who outgrow them" . Boy is THAT thinking wrong, wrong, wrong.
I've actually started writing a book about the situation--I was thinking of doing it for professionals, but I changed my mind am writing it for all of us who suffer. I don't know how many or if I will add any personal case studies, because this is more of a manual for how to deal with allergies, but I am doing some calculations of numbers of folks allerigc to different groups of foods as well as chemicals. If you want to share, contact me through my profile. I have blocked only a very few categories from who may contact me. Happy eating anyway.

My brother who is allergic to squashes (which includes pickles), strawberries, pine trees, milkweed (used to stuff furniture and pillow) and a ton of other stuff, married a woman who was allergic to milk and eggs and other things and they had a son who is gulten intolerant. My sister and mother allergic to any type of bug/bee stings and bites. I am lactose intolerant--violent reactions to cows milk--born with it, drank barley water and goats milk as a baby. Cheese does not bother me.

Milk in all its forms, especially the aged concentrate called cheese. Once I found this out, though, and avoid (most of) it, the horrible hay fever and wasp allergy I had had all my life started going away. It's often a catalyst for other allergies. If I got stung before, I would swell like a balloon and become faucet-faced for at least a day. Now it just hurts - that's great! Especially since the wasp thing is progressive and could have killed me with a few more times.
I am NOT lactose intolerant, I am allergic to casein - there's a difference. Many multivitamins include this for what reason I cannot fathom. I found that out after feeling like tearing my face off for several days from excruciating itching. My son had an episode with accidentally eating cream cheese in a cake icing at a church dinner and was immobilized for part of an afternoon. He doesn't know how long because he couldn't even lift his arm to see his watch.
My only real item I miss is cheap chocolate candy (I can make non-dairy ice cream). Those without dairy are expensive.

Peas.

Just a note... the blood test for Celiac disease is not reliable. The only way to know for certain is to have a biopsy from your stomach lining tested. They can usually do this through an upper gastro intestinal scope (otherwise know as an upper GI). Typically, you will have to go to a specialist such as in internologist or gastrointernologist.

Best wishes! :)

I feel your pain. I was diagnosed with allergies to soy (now in EVERYTHING because they tell us it is healthy), oats (not too hard to avoid), and yeast (which is anything and everything fermented, root grown, or having any type of vinegar in it). So basically, I've live on benadryl and pray that if I limit my consumption and rotate my foods, it will keep my reactions small and won't require an epi pen.

I understood that it is typical for boys to 'outgrow' food allergies and girls actually develop food allergies as they get older. I do my best to limit my consumption of any processed foods since there ALWAYS seems to be some form of soy or yeast (or yeast biproduct; citric acid, dried or fermented items, malt, MSG, all vinegars, antibiotics, nitrates, nutrasweet, cottonseed, malodextrin, many vitamins, etc.), but the condiments are my downfall. I'm trying to learn how to live without them through use of fresh spices instead of ketchup, mayonaise, or salsas, but it is really difficult.

Best wishes to you on your book and to all those who suffer from any allergy, common or not.

Not a single (solid)food allergy. Very lucky that way. Bout the only things that don't agree with me are milk and alcohol. Not a biggy I like frozen yogourt better than ice cream, have no problem with cheese interestingly enough! And I don't challenge the alcohol.

Just curious, since you have tempted the chicken--does it matter how it is cooked , or cooked in?

by choice, i do not eat mammals. now, attempting to improve my gastro issues due to my lyme and the antibiotics that keep me walking, i had a series of exotic blood tests by a local homeopath/MD who thank G-d, also recognizes the seriousness of lymes and the necessity for antibiotics! too many whackos who don't know what they are talking about, with one cure after the other.

at any rate, the dr. says i have one of the highest mercury levels he has seen. stat blood tests did not show this until he "chelated" me and drew out the mercury from various organs. it will take a year to chelate out the rest. bye bye tuna fish and a few other fishies. interestingly, mercury acts as a shield against the antibiotics' effectiveness. also blew my minds that intestinal yeast is the body's means to try to stave off the mercury--still not sure how, we have further discussion at the next visit.

then to make matters worse, although he did not test me for allergies, thus far i have antibodies to gluten, soy, egg and dairy. he did not even test the allergy potential for the range of other things. it appears that if not properly augmented, the antibiotics and accompanying gastro issues related to lymes, interfere with proper digestion and often big chunks of food can enter the blood stream. not broken down to sufficiently get to the liver soon enough, these food fragments are treated as invaders and are attacked by antibodies in the blood. star wars!

so, after a week of "detox" , i was supposed to test one food at a time to see what happened. but so many variables are also contributing, i am still not sure. right now my major problem is figuring out what/how to eat until i figure it out and get other things done. so far fish on the lower end of the chain, low fat poultry, rice, quinuoa, spelt, etc. ,which is not all that thrilling, is nonetheless acceptable. fortunately we have a raw foods bakery that makes fantastic desserts, but they are very expensive. also, i am way too exhausted and busy to make the recipes myself, but one of these days...

right now, i'd give anything to have my meals delivered, already prepared, so i can deal with the rest of my life! any suggestions? there are some caterers for celiacs but they have the other things i cannot eat.

if i don't take cafeine or an upper drug which has other side effects, i get way too tired too fast. so, i am taking coffee and with eveaporated milk which seems ok. way back, another lymes dr. mentioned that she too found other patients who could not drink milk, but could have evaporated milk and yoghurt due to the processes which she thought weakened the proteins. so, if you cannot have milk, i'm interested if you have found that also.

also any "simple" recipes????

I am allergic to gluten and casein.

Gluten is a protein in wheat and similar grains,
casein is a protein in dairy products and is used as an additive in lots of prepared foods.

I think I am the only person I know of who is allergic to celery. One whiff of it and I start vomiting and get severe migranes......one bite and it just about kills me. My poor children actually whine for celery. Makes me feel awful!!! :(

I'm not allergic to anything...I feel so left out. (j/k)
However, I don't eat anything that's green. Wasn't a conscious choice...I just don't like ANYTHING that is green. (well...actually there is two exceptions to that)
