I've always wanted to do a storm chasing holiday in America. Hoping to do one within the next couple of years.
|
| thunder :S Posted: 7/4/2008 10:06:57 AM | why not put loud music on...... or a film and use your surround sound, close curtains so you get full cinema effect?
Personally i love storms and if i know one is on its way i go down to my local beach to sit and watch it.
|
| thunder :S Posted: 7/4/2008 10:13:11 AM | I love thunderstorms. We get great ones down here on the south east coast. If they are out at sea I like to go down to the beach and watch them. It's amazing standing there sometimes as the wind blows them in sure. You can see what's coming, then bang! It's there. Rain hail, it's awesome!
I REALLY must get over my fear of flying so I can go on a proper storm chasing holiday. That would be the ultimate holiday for me

| thunder :S Posted: 7/4/2008 10:17:38 AM | Off topic: Tall Graham; buy a copy of Alan Carr's Fear of Flying book. As a previously frightened out of my life scaredy cat when it came to planes, after reading the book I'm a reformed character. Love flying and wouldn't hesitate to jump on a plane these days.
On topic; in S Wales the weather has been awful this summer. No hot, humid weather, and I doubt any storms !!

Nothing to be ashamed of there we all have our fears. I HATE moths. They drive me nuts.
Seriously though Kath111 you need to go outside and watch a storm. Out over the sea it is miles away so you are perfectly safe. It is such a beautiful and humbling site to see the true power of nature.
Plus if it does blow in then just jump in the car. It is the safest place to be in a storm. Top Gear proved that when they took a car to Germany and simulated it getting struck by lightning while Richard Hammond was sat inside it.

Thanks for the tip Honeybee. I'll look that book up. I have already found a fear of flying course that Virgin run. Have spoken to someone who went on it and apparently it is great.

It's True when did my Live line Clearance Training ( Cutting trees back from 11kv to 66kv live power lines) they showed us a similar video but of a car driving through a large substation with a conductor rod on roof and even though after four minutes the car's electrics were shot the bloke driving it was unharmed ....BUT if you do try this do not attempt to get out during the storm as soon as you place your foot on the ground and are touching the car you are the best earth ......
Mind you have been on emergency call out work where storm damage is risking life and been up the top of a large Scots Pine Tree in a Storm that makes you a bit wary of the big flashes around you ( and yes Trees do conduct electricity even though made of wood ( the sap and water inside ) ~plus they explode/shatter when struck ... So never stand under a tree to shelter especially the tallest one in the area lol ..

| thunder :S Posted: 7/4/2008 1:10:29 PM | apparently a comon cause of death in the usa involving lightning is those using a landline phone, huge surge of power through the ear piece!!!!

| thunder :S Posted: 7/4/2008 8:50:53 PM | hereathere how you get pics of lightening is by leaving the shutter open until it occurs. so film cameras are better than digital, as the b or bulb setting on them is pretty short if you have it at all. close the shutter after the lightening it's very suck it and see so you get what you get. sorry to go off topic folks but i couldn't private message as im not female. | |

ok here goes. now this is truly pathetic admittedly lol but the sky has gone dark and theres that odd breeze you get before a storm and i know there is one forcast. my problem? im petrified of thunder storms and lightening! ok so being a mother of 4, im supposed to stay all calm and contained but when you have such an irrational fear its easier said than done. so any tips for keeping my cool is greatly appreciated
Stick in some earphones and listen to some tunes so you can't hear the thunder.
I love thunder and lightening myself.
