I have one my dad taught me run your hands under cold water as cold as it will get, and then dry them on a towel. Do not touch your eyes with your hands, but dab them with a damp towel dipped in cold water and presto no more tears. Just don't touch your eyes with onion juice on them or you'll be in trouble. It's wierd I know, but it works. Usually as soon as you put your hands under cold water the tears stop.

Chopped onions in the freezer section of your supermarket. They're Ore-Ida!

I never have tears cutting onions. This I know from the discovery channel and is a fact on why most people cry while cutting onions. Onions are high in sulphur, when the vapors from the onion come in contact with the moisture in your eyes, it makes sulphuric acid, only a small amount and low PH of course or you would be blinded, so therefore you produce tears as a normal reaction to this.

Just thought this was very informational

I have a small tabletop fan in my kitchen, which I bought at a dime store. It's only about 6 inches tall and could hardly make enough breeze to stir a fart. However, when I chop onions, I have this fan blowing across the onion, and it seems to be enough to blow away the sulfur gases before they have a chance to reach my eyes. I can chop onions all day long this way, and i am very susceptible to tearing up when I chop onions. The refrigerator trick might work for some people, but it doesn't work for me. I keep my onions in the fridge anyway, never even thought about leaving them outside!

Once i've taken the skin off the onion, i run cold water over it for a minute or two and when I go to chop it up it doesn't make me cry

Ok here is what I have learned through the years.
Refrigerate the onions first
Plug your nose or stuff tissues up there while cutting
Safety goggles

And for the smell, rub stainless steal on your fingers after and perhaps some Lemon juice

I wear contacts most of the time and never have any problem with my eyes when chopping onions (which I do almost daily). Occasionally I'll have my glasses on rather than wear contacts, and then when I chop onions my eyes tear up like the Hoover Dam....and my onions live in the fridge all the time so I'm not sure refridgeration helps! (Maybe it does and I'd be even worse if they didn't live in the fridge). I've heard people say they keep swim goggles in their kitchen "junk drawer" to use every time they chop onions...might look funny but I'm sure it works and it's probably faster than a lot of other suggestions might be!

According to Martha Stewart!

You just have to light a small candle and set it in front of wherever you are working with the onions and the flame will burn off the gasses released from the cut onion - in her words "no gasses - no tears"

**I haven't actually tried this, so I don't know if it works or not?

Sometimes I forget to take precautions and then I have to go stick my head in the freezer for a few minutes.

I don't see anything wrong with onion smell on my hands. Makes me want to lick'em. lol. But if it bothers you, Lemon GoJo Mechanic's hand cleaner will get just about any smell off your hands, including hamburger grease after you have a nice juicy burger meal. Available at auto parts stores.

Easiest and quickest way (although you might look silly) Stick your tongue out for the duration of chopping, you get a tingly feeling on your tongue but it does not reach your eyes .... works for me everytime

I have only recently experienced the crying thing with onions which is really odd since I have been cutting onions since I was at least 10 years old.
Anyhow, I normally use the brown skinned onions, not too large of an onion and I normally find they are not Tear Jerkers.

I have been using Shallots a lot now and I enjoy the different taste to them, it is nice to mix things up every now and then and try something new.

I don't find myself spending a lot of time cutting onions so I would just suggest to you to wear glasses, or googles and cut fast but carefully and get it over with.

place a tablespoon in your mouth (upside down) before you start chopping and hang on to it.

you will be surprised at how good this is. ( for stopping tears!)
