| Onions and crying. Posted: 4/2/2008 11:51:16 AM | | Use a sharp knife! It releases less of those sulphur compounds that interact with the moisture in your eye to become sulphuric acid. That's what causes the crying. | |

| Onions and crying. Posted: 4/2/2008 6:15:05 PM | Relax.....let the tears flow....eventually your eyes will have a thick enough film on them to protect them....no more tears!
Just never...ever....wipe your eyes....it just makes matters worse. Blink lots!

Sweet onions don't bother me , and smelling a slice of bread seems to neutralize the others .

| Onions and crying. Posted: 4/2/2008 6:51:52 PM | I know of one way, put your onions in the refrigerator. Somehow the cold air helps so you will not cry. I should know this trick cause i cut red onions more than once a day. Also, another way would be to wear contacts.

OMG!! I've done the same thing!! Running to the freezer and frantically waving the cold air into my eyes!
Like other posters have said, I found chewing gum does help, but when you're on onion number 6 no matter how many pieces you have shoved in your mouth and how hard you chew, it doesn't help much.... there just better not be anyone between me and the freezer!!

| Onions and crying. Posted: 4/24/2008 5:11:04 AM | | Supposedly, if you breathe through your mouth while chopping them your eyes will not water. | |

| Onions and crying. Posted: 4/24/2008 8:56:41 AM | I have an "onion chopping fan." I bought it at WalMart for $5. It's very compact; I set it up to suck the vapor away from the onion (and me) as I chop it. It helps to chill, not freeze, the onions first, also helps to rinse them in cold water just prior to chopping, but the fan works better than anything else I've tried. | |

| Onions and crying. Posted: 4/24/2008 9:31:25 AM | I too have an "onion chopping fan." Took the Fan cage off and stood the fan in my biggest plastic mixing bowl
Just toss the onions at the fan Will chop up $5. worth of onions before you have a chance to cry.
Works better than anything else I've tried.

| Onions and crying. Posted: 5/1/2008 9:42:32 AM | | I'm training to be a homeopath and thought DUH when I read on my study group about using Allium cepa before cutting onions. 6 ch is all you really need and I keep it in the kitchen just for this use. It is made from red onion and will keep you from crying. One pellet under your tongue is all it takes. I don't take it before, I wait and see how bad it will be. I keep my onions in the fridge and also, as you cut closer to the stem end it will be worse so slice from the top down without cutting the bottom off first. | |

| Onions and crying. Posted: 5/1/2008 4:17:09 PM | | I have noticed a lot of people saying this but wearing contacts really does help. My eyes started watering really bad the other day when I was chopping onions and I was like why? Then I realized I was wearing my glasses instead of my contacts but by then it's too late because you definitely don't want to put contacts in when you have onion and jalepeno oils on your fingers. | |

| Onions and crying. Posted: 5/2/2008 11:02:15 AM | | stick a spoon in your mouth when chopping them | |

| Onions and crying. Posted: 5/3/2008 1:02:54 AM | I mentioned this before, but my post is really old and buried in an earlier thread. So I want to say it again, using a fan works 100% of the time, guaranteed from onion #1 to #48 or however many you have to chop. I bought my fan off the discount bin at a dimestore. It's just a little tabletop fan, about 5 inches in diameter. Not a huge breeze, but enough to blow away any gases and vapors the onion might send out. So forget about sticking baby carrots up your nose, rubbing your armpits with sliced apples, squinting, chewing gum, singing Ave Maria into a paper bag, or whatever other wacky suggestions are floating around. The fan simply works, and it makes perfect intuitive sense! | |

| Onions and crying. Posted: 5/3/2008 1:49:21 AM | I actually like the feeling of the tears flowing when I chop a onion. It let's me know the onion is really fresh and gets me in tune with my female side for a moment. | |
