| If Italian need not apply Posted: 7/23/2006 7:51:44 AM | | Maybe she was just being sarcastic? Maybe it was in jest? I know my friends and I have a running joke that if we dated and had bad experiences with at least two guys with the same first name, if we meet someone interested in us with that name we all hum the psycho music in each others ears joking around. But it's all in jest. Sometimes you have to take things with a grain of salt...ya know? | |

| If Italian need not apply Posted: 7/23/2006 8:02:47 AM | This could be one of the dumbest threads I have seen yet.
Funny Girl, your guy may be Italian but that isn't what makes him a good guy. He just happens to be Italian.
As far as whoever stated "smokers come is all sizes too, etc..." Yes, but smoking is a choice. Your ethnic heritage is not.
Whoever had the profile that made the original statement needs serious therapy.
"Maybe she was just being sarcastic? Maybe it was in jest?"
A comment in a forum, I might buy that. Not on the profile.
What else do we have?
Jews are cheap. Blacks have rhythm. Polaks are stupid. Irish are drunks. Scots are cheap. White guys can't jump.
Okay, sometimes it works......

| If Italian need not apply Posted: 7/23/2006 8:26:48 AM | This could be one of the dumbest threads I have seen yet. Inn, I have to disagree. I think the thread is an example of different views and thoughts about selection and whether or not that makes us narrow minded or not. There were some wonderful posts, like TEE, who was married to an abusive man who was Italian and did her best not to generalize about all Italians because of a bad experience with one. Yes, there were some really stupid posts like someone who equated my not wanting to date a smoker with this person's choice to avoid Italians. As one other poster pointed out, smoking is a behavior vs your ethnicity is how you are born. Smoking is specific and the reason I feel this way is I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, I've never met someone allergic to another person's ethnicity. Then there is the guy early on who seems to think I was playing the "race" card (Italian is an ethnicity not a race) and goes on to write all kinds of generalizations like, "All Italians are mama's boys and the sisters are meddlers etc." A post like this (and the responses to it) exposes people and makes you realize that prejudice may not be as overt as it once was but it still exists in so many minds. I liked what you wrote re: generalizations that people have of the different ethnicities. Sad, but true in the minds of so many.
Finally for all those who think that the comment got under my skin, it didn't. It takes a great deal more than anything written on any of these boards to do that. I wrote I was "TAKEN ABACK" translation: was surprised that someone (IMO) could write such an ignorant thing and was curious to reactions from people on the boards. The post definitely led to some spirited thoughts/divergent opinions and, for me, that is the purpose of the forums.

| If Italian need not apply Posted: 7/23/2006 8:35:50 AM | I was pretty upset with this thread yesterday, but if she walked into one of my best friends bakery........I'd still treat her to a CANNOLI filled pastry and espresso! | |

| If Italian need not apply Posted: 7/23/2006 9:17:59 AM | It figures that Italian gets upset by someone saying "no persons of x descent"
After all, ALL Italians:
are fiery personalities eat pizza watch soccer 24/7 parade in the streets with flags say "Momma Mia" at least 3 times a day think the Roman Empire should return to power
Who can blame her or being close minded.

| If Italian need not apply Posted: 7/23/2006 12:28:49 PM | I think she was rude in using the word "apply" toward any man who might express and interest in getting to know her. It implies a superiority I find offensive. I know a lot of people have that in their profile and are probably very nice, but it sounds high handed TO ME.
As for the Italian men...never met one I didn't like. Those I have known have been polite, charming, chivalrous, and very respectful. And quite a few have been devilishly handsome. Love them, just LOVE them, especially the AZZURRI.

| If Italian need not apply Posted: 7/25/2006 8:31:30 AM | Freedom of choice. People who try to find fault with others because of different preferences usually need to look at themselves. Usually they are unhappy with themselves.
We all have the right to be Individuals. An individual is defined by having a unique opinon.
The problem with cultures in which Male pride and domination is a cultural value, is that it puts undue pressure on males who feel rejected and they try to oppress women to maintain what is culturally expected of them, often they themselves don't want to do this, but they feel pressured to be a dominant Male.
Everybody has the right to define themselves. Those who seek to oppress individuals are unhappy with themselves.
