Once women hit a certain age (50ish), long hair doesn't look good anymore, generally speaking. I'm not saying you need to get a Barbara Bush cut on your 50th birthday, but longer hair generally looks better on younger women, whereas shorter, chin and shoulder length cuts tend to be appealing on "mature" women. Biologically speaking, men are more attracted to long hair because it represents youthfulness and femininity which is instinctually indicative of an ample mate for reproduction.

Funny how our minds work. We're just a bunch of animals :-)

I had very very very very short hair when I was in high school and going through my punk rock/hardcore stage...Now that it's long (and healthy), I wouldn't cut it if someone paid me. I have a feeling that I will one day be that 50something woman who just can't pull off very long hair anymore but still tries.

~OT~ I lived through the 80s when my hair was short/short/short and the men's hair was long/long/long. I kept mine shoulder length until May '05. One day, I decided to let it run wild and it's now almost waist length ~ it stays!! If someone thinks long hair is not appropriate or unattractive after a certain age ~ I'd probably giggle. We'll see what they think when they are pushing 45-50. One thing didn't change with the length of my hair ~~ I still prefer long hair on certain men.

I can shower, do makeup, and dress in 30 minutes, and I always looked pulled together. I just love the freedom that it gives me. But this is a personal choice to keep it short.

So can I! (My record is 20 minutes actually). When I had short hair, however, it took me FOREVER to get it JUST RIGHT. If you have a somewhat styled short cut, it's definitely MORE of a hassle than long hair. That's the main reason I let it grow. I had to get it cut every 2 weeks. Had to blow dry it. Had to use icky, sticky, gelly hair products.

But hey, my mom has very short hair that's not styled (attractive but not much to it) and she just hops out of the shower and she's done. So I understand what you're saying.

And by the way verygreeneyez, your hair is very pretty. You pull it off well. I was making a very general statement.

^^^I'm sorry for the confusion JacquiNJ ~ I was posting to someone a few pages back, missed your post or I would have clarified!! (Thanks, btw!)

I'm with you ~ screw the mousse, hair gel, hair spray, highlight/lowlight, etc., etc., etc. This is simple and easy and my time was cut in about 1/2. As for make-up, I read an article that claims if you take longer than 5 minutes for your entire make-up routine, you're either doing it wrong or wearing too much. I like that, keeps things simple.

I agree with most of the women on here when they talk about how much work it is to maintain long hair, short hair is usually more practical and of course can look cute! Long is my preferance as well, partially due to the fact that I couldn't pull short hair off and because I like the look of it!

There are some women who look nice with short hair. But, I think women who keep it cut short because it's "easier" are being a little lazy. My mom and my aunts had long, thick, nappy African American hair. They had to flat iron it, perm it,pick it or braid it to look nice. And they always kept their hair looking nice. With no complaints.

I just cut my hair a couple of years ago. It was past my shoulders, very thick and curly. It's not that hard to keep long hair looking nice and I'm a guy, with a disability, who doesn't want to spend a lot of time in the mirror. Wash, gel, brush or comb and go.

In my experience, the women who complain that long hair is too hard to take care of, end up letting themselves go in the long run. They get comfy, chop off the hair and gain a few pounds. Of course, there are exceptions.

There are some of us who's hair is not right for long hair. My hair is very fine and when it grows long, it looks thin and stringy. There is nothing attractive about it and no amount of styling in the world is going to help that. And yes, I like the ease of short hair. I work every day like many women do these days. How many people really want to get up an hour or more earlier every morning just to style their hair?

So how come most women in my age bracket cut their hair short??
That's a good question. Maybe it's just easier for them to keep it cut.

For me ... it's easier not to cut my hair so my hair is just about down to my waist. I like the feel of it on my back and I enjoy the looks I get when I let it down in front of people who don't know how long it is because I wear it up a lot.

My own daughter recently proclaimed ... "OMG Mom ... I didn't realize your hair was so long. Get over here ... I want to play with it!!!" That sure brought back fond memories.

I had three girls and when they were young, they used to make me sit on the floor in front of the couch so they could sit up on the couch and play with my hair ... or as they called it ... "Fix Mommy's Hair Time". It would put me to sleep.

And no man on earth is going to make me grow my hair, if you find it unfeminine then fjärt off!

Jacquin

I actually do not agree.

I am a hairdresser and loads of older women have short and long hair.
It is about personal reference.

It requires much better facial features to be able to look good in short hair than with long hair as short hair brings out your facial features.

I wear my hair long because it is very easy to take care of....wash it, condition, brush out, tie up in a pony tail...that's what I normally do. But being long, I can braid it, curl it, or wear it up in just about every style imaginable. Or just wear it down and straight. Long hair has the versatality short hair could never have. Plus, on me, anyway, it just looks better longer than shorter.

*disclaimer* this is gonna be looong. nothing gets me more riled up (on the subject of aesthetics, than short vs long hair)!

First, in response to some of the posters...

BeachDave (and any others who think this): no, not all women look more attractive with longer hair (i'm paraphrasing what you said here). There are a few women I work with who have longer (past shoulders) hair and they do "nothing" with it, so it just ages them.

EligibleRespelled: Please, take some grammar and proper writing lessons or something 'cos it pains me to read that gibberish you posted. Punctuation--ever hear of it? It exists for a reason

ScorpionMover: Bollocks! Short haired women date and get some, I'm sure, as much as long haired women

Willy1971: never mind the naysayers... your hair looks fab!

Stellarbystarlight: WTF? Short hair is plenty attractive. I still think Halle Berry looked much hotter with her super short hair; ditto for Charlize Theron.

lateef7842: its not laziness, it's called being busy. Who really has hours to devote to their hair nowadays? (besides my sister, who doesn't work and takes 2 hrs. to blow-dry and straighten her beyond-shoulder-length, super-thick hair--bollocks!).

Finally, no, some older women cannot pull off longer hair... if its well maintained--nice cut, proper product for thickness and texture, etc. sure its nice (think Demi Moore: older but can afford the maintenance). If it hangs limp and lank, dry or frizzy, numerous split ends, then who cares about length? It looks unattractive (and I'm thinking of some of the women on here who are proclaiming their long locks as fabulous and unwilling to consider anything else when I say this). And sorry, those who claim all men looove their hair long--well, who are these men? Are they all paragons of style themselves?

Short haired women are equally as sexy as those who claim long hair as the "ultimate" in sexiness ! Not all women can pull off long hair (or shouldn't if they're not going to devote themselves to proper upkeep). Facial structure matters for sure. Some women look rounder or dated with long, one-length hair. How is that "sexy"? *shrug*

I've never believed that (only) long hair = sexy and haven't had long hair since my teens (even then, only slightly past shoulders); my hair is fine and tends to look flat when longer, even though I'm trying to grow it out after having it short for the past several years. It'll never be down my back or much past shoulder length (unless I get extensions, just for fun) 'cos it grows painfully slooow but already I dislike how not-as-easy it is to wash, picking longer hairs off my shirt and blow drying---bleah.

I find this attitude of longer hair being equated with sexiness somewhat archaic. Going back to a time when a woman's hair was her "crowing glory" or some such nonsense. And all this about long hair being equated with fertility and health--again, hogwash! I thought that's what hips and a rounder figure were for

Sexy is attitude. Genuine confidence, intelligence, a joie de vivre... that is what is sexy. And I'm sure few would argue with that!

(told ya this would be long )

I am 42 and have long hair. Fashion has stated for years (since the 20's maybe?) that women over a certain age should have shorter hair. I never understood why. It isn't
"elegant" I guess. I think "elegant" and "sexy" are considered by the "powers that be" to be mutually exclusive.

Some women simply cannot grow their hair very long--it has to do with the natural growing-resting-shedding cycle. The longer the "resting" phase, the longer the hair grows.

I wear my hair up (hair sticks or chignon pins or ponytail) to get it off my neck in the summer. I like it down in the winter (or in bed). I think long hair is easier to care for than short hair. I don't blow dry or style it at all. Just let it go natural, pretty much. I wash it daily, condition it, and let it air dry. I trim it a couple of times a year--people with "stylish" short hair have to maintain it with trims every 6 weeks or so, and probably spend significant time with blow dryers or curling irons, etc. and spend more money on gels, sprays, etc. For my lifestyle, longer is "easier".

People need to wear their hair in a way that makes them feel good about themselves. It never hurts to make your preference known, though. And if you're with a woman with long hair, let her know how much you appreciate it.

Personally I hate short hair !That is for me. Long hair is what I like for me but most women have some dumb freak idea its cuter and easier to style. But In my opion it takes away from being female and so not for me.

Biker boyz? My hair will never be as long as it was in high school because i am not getting up hour early to do it. As you age you find out that for every inch of hair you do not have to fix you get 10 minuets of sleep.

I have to agree with this. There are many women with long hair that is in such terrible condition, bad perms, over processed, split ends and dried out from using cheap products, and not having a good trim for decades, still wearing a hairstyle from the 80's...... Sorry, it may hang down to your ass, but I have seen better tails on horses. Funny thing is that many of these women are the first ones to go on about how their hair makes them feel sexy and how much their men like it. GAAK! In my experience, the women with the really beautiful hair dont bring attention to it.

I will say that as I have very thick and curly hair, who has a fabulous hairstylist that know how to cut curly hair, it is still difficult to deal with when it gets much below my shoulders. Had it to my hips once and it would take me literally 30 mins just to wash and comb through the conditioner in the shower. And SO Heavy, had to wait for it to dry before I could put in a pony tail just because of the weight or I would get a headache.

I'm sorry, but my experiences tell me something totally different. All I can do is go back to my mom and my aunts. If you know anything about African American hair, then you know it's very thick and kinky. The longer it gets, the harder it is to take care of. If you're not going to wear it naturally ( the longer it is, the bigger the afro), then you have to perm it, braid it, press it (flat iron), or throw a wig on(very hot and uncomfortable). Caucasian hair isn't anywhere near that difficult to manage. So yeah, it is laziness.

The women I grew up with, kept their hair long, and good looking. They worked long hours doing hard manual labor, came home, cooked meals and kept a clean house. That was the example I saw growing up. It's one thing if a woman has her hair cut short because she just like short hair. Some women really do look good with shorter hair. But, if a woman is keeping her hair cut short because she feels it's less work, then I think she is just being lazy.

What would you think of a man who didn't shave because it was less work? I would love to stop shaving. My daily routine would be a lot easier and more comfortable. Wouldn't you think I was just being lazy if I did that?

I would think that it is your face and you can stop shaving any time you want....Lateef you make it sound like a woman HAS to have long hair, is there some rule somewhere that I missed? Your mother and your aunts obviously had different priorities than some of the women on here. That doesnt make them any better or any worse, it just means that different things are/were important to them. Perhaps their hair was a symbol of their femininity to them, that is their call. My hair is part of who I am, it doesnt make me a woman.

Well, a fellow I work with and to whom I am greatly attracted sports a full, but nicely groomed beard and 'stache (by choice). I think he's gorgeous with it (though do admit to curiosity about what's underneath ) and he's a chef so I doubt its laziness... well, it could be, not wanting to shave everyday, but his beard needs upkeep too, so nope, can't be that.

I actually prefer some facial hair to smooth faced--seems more manly to me somehow
