teens and the death penalty
Posted: 1/12/2006 9:29:07 PM
I work with teenage delinquents, and while I have yet to see one put to death, I have done the reasearch and written the repots that have gotten teens certified to stand trial as adults, which in theory could result in the same...I am against the death penalty, though, for a reason I have not seen mentioned before, and that is simply this....
to me, the law is to be logical, scientific, and provable....separated from church and religion, etc, etc, when possible.

If here in Earth we cannot PROVE there is a heaven or a hell, or reincarnation or one trip, or ANYkind of afterlife whatsoever, then all we can deal with is the here and now....if we kill the guilty, then their time here, their punishment here, is provably over, finished, kaput.

BUT, even the Jeffery Dahmers and the other weirdo-psychos of the world-no matter HOW heinous their crimes- have mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, wives, children, friends and grandparents...people who care about them, and grieve when they die. If we kill the guilty, we cause a further infliction of pain on their INNOCENT caring others.....Now, to clarify, I DO believe in an afterlife, and I think that for the truly evil, their punishment continues in the next stage, BUT, if we are gonna separate them and deal in the provable here and now, then to me the death penalty is simply D-U-M-dumb....and morally wrong, to boot.

That said, I need to say further, though, that if we are gonna have it at all, the family members of the victims should get to decide, after a jury orders it, then the family can decide to override that and say NO, if they want, and then if they feel that strongly about it happening, they can pull the switch or whatever themselves, beacuase i think it comes down to revenge and closure for them, and that would help, as well as ....not pass it on to some sanitized governmental nameless, faceless person who then has to deal with the inevitable psychological aftermath......

I also really agreed with and enjoyed the list someone posted on the first page of this thread, thats all, I am opinionated out now, have a good evening!
