| You Might Be Older Than Dirt.........IF......... Posted: 2/4/2007 12:59:46 AM | | I remember being trusted to babysit at 11 years old and making a whole dollar a night. I can remember my first bike, a handmade one that my mom rode during wwII, and nobody thought it was strange, because it still worked, damnit. I can remember swimming in the rapids of the river, with no adult supervision and when somebody got hurt, just showing up at the nearest house for help, no questions asked. I remember being the first girl to actually wear a miniskirt from England, and fuscia plastic shoes that matched it, and getting sent home because it was too short! I can remember when you could feed a family of 6 for a week on ten dollars, and nobody went hungry. I can remember going to the store with a quarter, getting popsicles for5, plus a small pop and a chocolate bar, then taking the empty bottle back for another popsicle for Mom. I can also remember when the Beatles first came out, and the twist was banned in local sock hops because it was immoral. | |

... when icing your cake gave the cook repetitive wrist injury, and required as many men as does a coffin: to carry it to the table, and took an hour to load with the candles, a blowtorch to light them and and a firemartial was on hand... and blowing them out requires a paramedic and a free-standing oxygen cylinder...

You actually remember what a record player & 8-track is.
You know where you were & what you were doing when Elvis died, Ronald Reagan got shot & remember Watergate.
You had one of those character lunchboxes, "Dukes of Hazzard", "Wonder Women", etc You got a box of cereal for the plant in it. You could water that thing and it would grow and grow. (no toys in the boxes then)
Bellbottoms were hip, now we have "hipsters".
You thought 30 was old, now you realize you hit the big 30 you are in the prime of your life.
Riding in the back of a truck was cool & not against the law... ride for hours, going on vacation....
It was cool to go to a flea market...

Bubs Daddy, Candy Cigarettes coated with powdered sugar so you could make it look like you were smoking, swedish fish, wax pop bottles (bite the top drink the pop and chew the wax). Anyway this is in no way an endorsement but this site has some good vintage candy if anyone has any other links post 'em.

So old that you remember:
Riding a bike without a helmet and having one of the dangerous banana seats so you could pop wheelies and ride down the street with a baseball card and a clothespin so people would "think" it was a motorcycle.
Remembering the Wonderful World of Disney TV premeire, or being at either park when it opened.
Pong was "****in'" and you could play for 8-10 hours and "This is so cool it ain't never gonna get any better than this!" (BTW I'm 39 and yes I STILL play video games).
Not being able to afford levis and having your Mom drag you to Sears and buy "Tuffskins" in odd colors and coordinate them with plaid shirts...or worse... "Tuffskin" corduroys. You could never sneak up on someone because from 1.5 miles away they could hear "wvoop wvahp wvoop wvhap".
Having winter boots that were rubber and went over your normal shoes (the non insulated type).
Family videos on 8mm FILM (not tape) with no audio.
The remote control was the next person to get up from the couch to go to the bathroom...I swear we had contests becuase the person that got up also had to, in addition to changing the channel, had to get the chips, the kool aid etc.
Monopoly only came in one version.
There was this cool new thing called Betamax....
Everyone had a "mood ring".
As far as the channel 1 thing goes it is because In 1939 RCA asked the Federal Communications Commission to designate 13 television channels, enough to deliver three networks to every part of the country without interference. Even though each TV station would eat 30 times as much spectrum as one FM channel, Sarnoff tried to force the FCC's speedy approval -- mainly by demonstrating television at the 1939 World's Fair. Peeved at Sarnoff's bullying, FCC chair James Fly responded with populist fury: He believed bandwidth should deliver information and entertainment to every woodland shack before it delivered flashy TV to people who could, in 1939, afford a $600 set. Television, he announced, could ask for its bandwidth after FM radio got what it needed. And he promptly gave part of RCA's proposed Channel 1 to FM.
