I don't know how people can judge others when their life is so out of control.

He may not like minorities or other people in society but he probably dislikes himself even more.

It sometimes takes a lot of work to improve one's lot in life and one end result of improvement is higher self-esteem.

So, it is much easier for this guy to criticize others to make him feel better about himself. But that feeling is always fleeting.

If racism is what you are talking about, I'll suggest to rename it as cultural difference. I don't like the word racism because it sounds a bit negative and it seems to me it has hatred embedded. Kind of evil in itself so I don't like it. :)

A cultural difference is whether you eat with a fork or chopsticks.

Racism IS negative and evil - and using a euphamism doesn't change what it is.

Call a spade a spade. It's racism.

Guys like him are losers, they blame the world for their problems and insecurities, if anything I see a lot of intolerence coming from racists like him who believe anyone not sharing their views are ignornant but I just laugh and say to myself Racism is based on ignorance, the cure is ignorance is Knowledge, but these people have to posess intelligence before that get knowledge.

True Onegreatm8... this is a hot topic for me because I'm not a big fan of intolerance. I think Ohio is a little backwards that way, as I used to live in So. CA where there was a LOT more diversity and tolerance. We have a ways to go here.

Anyone who wants to expand their mind and really FACE the racism issue head on should check out an excellent movie "Hotel Rwanda," it will leave you in a flurry of emotions including shame and anger. Don Cheadle is such a great actor. Another one that leaves you really questioning your beliefs is "American History X" - Ed Norton is absolutely incredible. Both of these movies are NOT for the faint hearted, actually very brutal but very real and faces racism head on. I also watched that cable show "Black / White" produced by Ice Cube that really opened dialogue between the races. "Crash" is next on the viewing list...

I guess I'm one of those who faces the truth, rather than run the other way, even when it's painful. Honesty to the core! Can you handle it?? Peace out.

Unfortunately yes it is very alive in todays society.

I beg for the day that everybody realizes that we are all Gods children, and all of the same no matter what color we are. Some people, I believe, will never understand this.

Ive found that people who are unhappy with themselves are generally unhappy with others. Most of those unhappy people will lash out at a minority group or a stereotypical group and as ive found are the most judgemental of people, his racism stems from his hatred of himslef maybe due to his weight problem. Interesting topic for discussion. Certainly there are many, many people who have racist views, some who don't even realize it. I myself probably have some although I like to think that outside of Orangeman descendants from Ulster I don't have a lot. I should say, if you haven't figured it out already I am a WASP male living in New Brunswick, Canada.

A couple of observations to throw out for discussion.

My oldest son was dating an African Canadian a few years ago. They didn't end up staying together - she was a city girl, my son more of a country boy, or at least not a city boy. I was talking to him about how he should be careful with Malia and not to get her into difficult situations as there is an enormous amount of racism in Canada, even though it is is less obvious and open, say than in parts of the US. He reply was "Dad you should see the the looks I get from black males when Malia and I are out." I never thought of this occuring. I guess that opened my eyes quite a bit.

Now to clarify the crack about people from Ulster in the first para. First - my ex father in law. For no direct reason that he would ever supply, and he usually supplied more info than anyone would ever want on any subject, he hated, not just disliked, all blacks. One guy no big deal. (I offered to my son to take him and Malia to visit his Grandpa many times). Recently at my Mother's 80th birthday, a good friend of the family, the nicest little old lady you would ever want to meet, made a crack about two African Canadians that were at the party, good friends of the family. I was so shocked I could not remember the exact words. Both of their ancestory traces back to Ulster - coincidence or is there something there?

Anyways just a couple more observations about racism. I guess the only thing a person can do is try to live his/her life right, make sure their kids have an open and balanced outlook about all people. and speak up rather than let racist comments or acts go unchallened and therefore accepted.

Racism Is Still Alive - and so is Gang Cruelty
Posted: 8/8/2006 7:05:10 PM
Discrimination of all types is wrong. While your story horrifies me, what saddens me even more is the gang mentality of the responses - attacking another minority (i.e. people who are obese) is equally cruel.

This man is a racist, and deserves to be condemned for that. How much he weighs, however, has nothing to do with it, and the crowd mentality of calling him "fatso" and referring to him as a "whale" is equally deplorable. Give your head a shake people! You are behaving no better than he. If another person with obesity issues were to read this strand, how do you think they would feel?

Sometimes people have reasons they are "racist"...One bad experience can turn someone against a certain group quite easily...Not saying it's right, but it is true

Oh believe me I understand this so well and It bugs the piss out of me. I had a guy working for me last year who is 19 who had a Klu Klux Klan tattoo on his arm and used the " N" word about ten times a day and my bass player does the same thing . It's rediculous really. Small minds bug me.

well Nishama, while i tend to agree about the gang cruelty, I think youre missing the point on this on hun? Most people at least on this thread are not condemning him because of his obesity? theyre appalled by the incendiary comments this guy made, the fact that he lied to the OP etc etc basically this guy was throwing stones at glass houses with out looking in the mirror breaking his own home, I truly believe most folks on here werent bashing Obese people.

Sometimes people have reasons they are "racist"...One bad experience can turn someone against a certain group quite easily...Not saying it's right, but it is true-bull bain
no that's because the people you describe are weak minded individuals and cannot think logically in this instance, I will give you a example I was in Miami 15 yrs ago with a group of friends from my home city Toronto,Ontario Canada, and we were robbed at gun point, they knew we were foreigners, now these individual were hispanics we were in the wrong side of town I suspect, from that experience should I HATE or be PREJUDICE against Hispanics? no that was a isolated incident.

For the record I couldnt care less about people who are racist, they dont affect what I do, how I live nor do I care if they hate me, I go to bed at night, sleep well, eat 3 meals a day, live comfortably and I get to see parts of the world.

just my 2 cents.

...."I don't know how people can judge others when their life is so out of control."

Thats precisely why most people who feel the need to point the finger and judge others do it in the first place. When someone feels inferior for whatever reason, sometimes they spend their lives trying to find fault with everyone else,in order to make themselves feel better.Disliking another person simply based on their religious preference, skin color,or for any other unfounded reason, screams insecurity on the part of the individual thats doing it.Ive heard a gazillion different attempts made by people attmpting to rationalize and justify their ludicrous behavour...: "I had a bad experience with that particular nationality of people","Fill in the blank isnt a real religion",blah blah blah.....I think once we finally come to a place in our own lives where we are truly comfortable in our own skin,we become so much more accepting of one others differences.I think the world would be a very boring place if we all looked, thought, and acted the same.If there is one thing in this life that can truly poison a persons soul its hatred.JMHO

Being half native myself I can concur. In many social setting people have no problem telling jokes about various cultures. They don't even think twice about it. They have their laugh and their ignorance shines through.I recently heard a non smoker ranting about smokers. Similar to your date he weighted way tooooooooo much. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black. A bigots a bigot.

Over 500 lbs? He would not get the time of his day with me. I don't do fatties.
Sorry, but someone like that deserves to be called a fatso. You should have said that to his face and left him then and there.

Thanks for quoting her post as it was before she edited...all her off color words regarding those that are overweight certainly have opened my eyes. Heck, yesterday she commented that anyone with an "ounce of fat" shouldn't show it in their pics because the fat can be seen and it looks "bad".

It's one thing to have a preference, it's quite another thing to use off color words ("fatties/fatso") stating that preference to the friggin masses on the internet, or anywhere else for that matter.

Yeah...it's alive alright.

onegreatm8: Grow up, get over it. There are just as many racist black people as white. Blame?? The new generation blame us for enslaving the blacks. I've never had a slave, my parents never had slaves, neither did my grandparents. I've been blamed for alot of things, but I don't use it as a crutch just because I'm white.

Sadly, OP, I know all to well that kind of person. I (john speaking) was raised in south carolina, and got a not-so-nice introduction to racism at an early age.

In the bulk of the cases, it was poor, unwashed, unemployed people who all hated the "lazy" mexicans who worked their asses off for much less money than the white guy got for his unemployment.

A lot of racism is still leftover from yesteryear, but some of it is still born anew by people who need to project their problems onto others.

I was once actually asked by a co-worker "your married to an asian huh? must be nice... but dont you ever plan on marrying... you know, a real girl?"

The resulting conflict got us both fired.

Yeah, racisim is alive... but I do get the feeling its loosing some steam. Give it another few generations, but dont stop talking out the issue. Till racism is a beaten dead horse.. it should be talked about. Eventually our grandkids WILL think we were all retarded for our bumbling racism.
