| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 1/6/2007 5:51:07 AM | I don’t recommend travelling to Athens especially in summer, too much pollution!
Greek people are nice, intelligent, a little bit hot tempered and kind people. They love history and know almost how to make money. Greek guys are very sexy and appealing and Greek women I found very romantic and pretty.
It gets very hot in summer and taxi drivers are rude and drive like crazy. When foreigners/tourists drive in the streets, let’s say in Crete, they gotta be very careful not to crash. Not all Greek drivers pay attention to traffic rules. Well there are bad drivers everywhere, but over here in Scandinavia we really pay attention to rules! That's why it's kind of scary to drive a car over there.
I have travelled all over Greece especially, Crete and recommend those who are interested in driving car across Crete, buy a good map. Some of their maps are not accurate and confusing. The roads are not as good as the other parts of Greece especially from Kisamos to knosos. Did i mention the palace in knosos?
It seems to me that God put too much salt in the water! Greece is beautiful with beautiful people and good food.
PS: There are things that are not mentioned in travel books about different countries. You gotta see them and experience them yourself. Every person has their own understanding and experience about different countries.

Or try Tolo-- a bit touristy but a lot of fun (and nothing like breakfast with the topless Tolo ladies on the beach-- if you're into that). B)

| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 1/21/2007 11:53:36 PM | Yes me too went to greece a while back as a exchange student for 12months. Macedonia northern greece to thessaloniki down, The islands, Athens then headed down south. I admit i did'nt like Athens as it was dirty and found it most uncomfortable experience. Transport was difficult for me to use. The history of Greece is great to read about as so did the soliders who fought in the old times. I made sure i learn't to speak the language and get to learn the culture etc.....A couple of times i stuffed up with the language barrier. Overall i made this a good exchange for me too remember. Use Travellers cheques. | |

| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 11/12/2007 12:12:53 PM | | My daughter and I spent the month of July (Athens & 5 islands) in Greece and it was an incredible experience. We had backpacks and a couple of maps and went on a wing and a prayer!!! If we got to the ferry and timed it right for an island we wanted to go to, away we went! The best was the last week in Crete. So incredibly beautiful and driving was a cinch! I was in my element. Would rather drive there than on the Deerfoot in Calgary! People were amazing, would highly recommend it to anyone with a little sense of adventure! Can't comment on any tours, never did one! lol Cheers! | |

The south side of Crete, will do. Everywhere else is cold and rainy this time of the year. In Athens check Acropolis , National museum, and the Byzantine museum. Go up to Lycabetus hill, and to Plaka, the old town below Parthenon.

| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 3/4/2008 8:44:04 AM | | I went to Greece in mid Sept to mid October and the sea had had opportunity to warm up over the summer and was just like bath water! Weather was 25C to 30C and just perfect - this was the end of the tourist season so ferries were slowing down so beware of that. We didnt get to Rhodes due to the ferry schedule and went on to Crete instead and then fly out of there back to Athens. We did 12 islands in a month and had a wonderful time - fav island was probably Naxos for the vegetation, Patmos for the history and caves of St. John and managed to get to Turkey to tour Ephasus which was wonderful. Also there was a couple of small untouched islands Serifnos and Siftnos were are very nice. | |

| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 3/4/2008 4:53:32 PM | Ahhhh Greece!
I was there last June, 07. I loved Athens but it was stinking hot! Stayed in Plaka, did the usual sights, found the Greeks to be plenty friendly, remember having a great convo with an old Greek lady near Acropolis, neither of us had a clue what the other was saying, very funny but amazing what enthusiasm & mime can do.
Caught the ferry to Naxos, fell asleep & woke up at a mystery island. A local on the ferry strongly advised me to stay on board till Samos as this "mystery" island was "deserted", but the ferry crew kicked me off, The island turned out to be Ikaria & I loved it. Hired a scooter & fanged it for miles, beach, swim, dry off on scooter, resteraunt, next beach.... Nothing like riding along munching on a big bag of cherries, mmmmmm! Awesome views, windy mountain roads, feilds of sweet smelling summer herbs, a very romantic place & very much the real Greece. I'm going back there but it will be late in the season Sept/Oct. 08.
I really would like my own bike & tent & just island hop all summer long...... oh darn I'm day dreaming again.

| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 5/19/2008 3:23:40 PM | | I just got back from Greece this morning. I wanted to give anyone who is going to Greece a warning about a tour company we used while we were there - Hop In Sightseeing. Do not use them! We took a 1 day Island cruise on Saturday and they were very unprofessional. While on an excursion in Agenia, they left my group at one of the sites. The bus left 5 minutes before it was scheduled to leave. We were able to make our way back to the ship but it was difficult. When we complained to the crew, they became verbally abusive and blamed us stating that we were 10 minutes late coming back. They were in our faces yelling and screaming at us and one of the women grabbed my arm. It was very scarey! Anyways, I just wanted to give this warning out to anyone traveling to Greece! | |

| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 5/28/2008 5:15:34 AM | I went to Greece a few years ago and had a great time. I would strongly suggest going off season though unless you like thousands of tourists anywhere you go.
Athens seemed very dirty, but the rest of the places I went were beautiful.

| Anybody been to Greece? Posted: 5/28/2008 5:33:42 PM | You're probably back by now, but I thought Epidaurus and Delphi were the most inspiring places on the mainland. Everyone is dissing the mainland because it's dirty, but that's only true of Athens, and even then, who cares.
If you are back and want to recapture the trip, I recommend Henry Miller's Colossus of Maroussi. It is a literary travel journal of sorts and it is great to read once you've been to all the ancient sights.
