| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/19/2006 9:32:41 AM | I love the shape of Viking ships, and the carving on them. Someone said the shape makes them almost unsinkable. Makes me wonder why they dont still use that shape.
For what it's worth. My effort.
As Viking ships with curv-ed bow Slip through dark nights, Dip oars and fleetly Cross waters bright As a mirage of moonlight.
A single warrior stands in the prow Long hair streaming, Alert and now Is listening
Square sail does stout ship pull through night And there it is, the shore fire light As helmets donned and drums beat out The signal that all's well within And so they land Each man a king
Warm mead is taken Laughter's had For those who fell They say they're glad For they are in Valhallah
As Bragi greeted each of them Valkyries walked them to the gate, and Valgrind open, in they tred To dwell among the living dead In the warriors Hall
When Ragnarok at last does come Rise up they will by Odins side And fight the Giants bravely thus Until then, drink they mead
And feast on roasted boars and jest Heroic tales and bravery tests Show scars and wounds from fighting days With pride, as by the gods they're praised.
(thanking the viking gods for google! phew)

As for the ships, the secret of their success was the clinker built overlapping strakes. On most boats and ships for example the ribs form the body of the vessel while the hull is simply a skin. With Viking longboats the body IS the vessel and the ribs simply guide the shape of the ship. But by lashing the ribs to the hull and not nailing them down it allows for a great amount of flexibility not seen even in modern vessels. A replica ship being sailed across the north Atlantic by modern sailors got caught in a horrible storm. The grew were sure as they watched the hull flexing and moving that they would soon be casualties of a terrible experiment in ancient nautical engineering. But after the first hour it hit them that the vessel was behaving as it was supposed to. All the flexing and moving was part of the design and she made easy passage through a storm that would have ripped apart any modern ship or Ocean Liner! The durability, coupled with a shallow draft design that allowed ships of over 70 feet long to sit less than three feet deep in the water, made the Viking vessel almost unstoppable. As for your query, that design is still used by canoe and kayak builders and allows these smaller vessels to have 6-8 inch drafts and thus to be able to get into places where no other boat can get.
Again great poem. BTW > Valhalla has no "h" in the end. But at any rate awesome poem!
Thanks again. - Erik - | |

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/19/2006 8:10:39 PM | Thanks Erik
A little shabby but all I could manage. And thanks for the heads up re spelling and all the info on the ships, draft depth etc.
I'm a woman. I think they are nice looking ships but the flexibility makes sense.

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/19/2006 8:25:59 PM | saltytowers > Thanks again. I think your poem read quite nicely. I will have to post a good Norse God poem on the thread some time in honor of the one you left for me. The ships of the Vikings do indeed look nice and elegant. I built a small one long ago for a Mideval recreation group I was with at the time. One day I'd like to try my hand at a full sized ( or at least a little ) larger one. Anyway, great poem. Thanks!

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/19/2006 9:05:23 PM | Sounds like a fantastic idea
I would offer to help crew, with a sail I am ok, unfortunately not very good with oars. I dip too deep and go in a big wide circle
The wood itself has little air pockets inside it, unlike steel which they have to build air into. Sounds like fun :) I hope you have the chance to do it.
Too old now to try, but I'll be happy to light the shore fire. And will have a jug of mead warmed by the fire as you step off the ship.
Bon voyage | |

There is a path which I must tread, Sometimes it's dark and full of dread, Sometimes it's bright and clear to me, It calls my name and whispers free, And if I stare long down the path, It makes me weep and makes me laugh, And I must tread on down the trail, For when I stop is when I fail.

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/21/2006 10:01:14 PM | - For Alis Kat -
Alis Kat with raven hair, Words of praise with me you share, I have read your profile well, Oh the praise that I could tell!
Deep in spirit, playful eyes, Exquisite you tease the guys, With your sunny energy, Though that spirit's never free.
Poet, Skald, and thinker too, How the world must look to you, Filled with such strong memories, In your heart the tears to seize.
In your pictures I have seen, Things unsaid that still you mean, Pain and joy and magic too, All the inner parts of you.
But your world is safe with me, For I'll not share what I see, Happy to know all the while, Thank you for that special smile!
- Erik - Thanks again Your poem on your profile was very nicely written. Thanks for visiting my thread and I hope that you like this poem. Take care!

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/21/2006 10:57:55 PM | THE DRAGON
Thunder the Heavens, the stormbringer comes, Rage fills his heart and fire his lungs, Rend through the skies and howl cross the void, Wings bring a passion to feed and destroy,
Serpentine scales and glimmering defiance, Flight over land he has no reliance! Drawing in breath, the hissing of flames, Black smoke and ash are all that remains.
Eyes like a hawk that see in the black, Deep rending claws to strafe and attack, So fierce the heart, and so strong the ire! Twisting and diving, unleashing the fire!
Ruler of the sky and master of the stone, Dreadful in sleep, so wicked alone, When you are gone, the legends wont fail, Deep in our hearts you will prevail.

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/22/2006 2:03:12 PM | This is something that cracks me up a little. Not that I think that cute girls with pics where they are suggestively posed in lingerie deserve to be treated like dirt or the unmitigated drool spot for some pervert with an urge to e-mail. BUT the idea of sex as an attractant to the darker element as well as the good ones is what I find amusing. So I am putting it in a poem.
- WHY DO PERVERTS WRITE ME!? -
Sexy girl in black panties: "Why are perverts writing me? Dont they like my charming wile? Or just dream of doggie style!?"
Showing off the cleavage shot, all those guys think you are hot! They're not looking in your heart, Just to get your legs apart!
" Why?" She cries,"Are men such jerks?" As she shows them all the works. Are you really such a fool? Bent in pics that make them drool!
Sure you're charming, fun, and witty, But in thongs it's not just pretty! If you show your wilder side, Some will want you for a ride!
So as you sit in that chair, In your bra and underwear, Dont be shocked when some guys write, That they'de like to make your night!
It's not that they think "You slut!" As you show off your fine butt, Just that they get so excited, When they think of parts united!
So if you have sexy pics, And the e-mail get's real sick, Know that guys will ogle you, And that's not all they would do.
Seeking love while posting sex, Try not to be so perplexed, That some guys just dont "get" you, Flesh just makes them want to screw.
- Erik -
I just thought it was funny the many times I have read a thread where a girl says, "I get all these perverts wanting to write or cyber!" and her profile pics would have Hugh Hefner taking notes! hahahaha, That said, I have more respect than to bug you with lude offers, BUT, I do like those profiles too! Nice eye-candy! Yum yum! Keep it up girls! hahaha No pun intended! later.

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/22/2006 5:27:33 PM | Some guys DO have a brain
Great write Erik. I liked that one, and also the one where you wrote about what a 'real' love is :) Nice writes both of them.
You seem to understand the male/female thing well and be able to say it how it really is. I have challenge for you. Can you write about a guys profile from the "I'm a macho" or "I'm Mr Nice Guy" perspective?
I see so many threads on "Why dont women like nice guys" where they actually turn nasty on the women responding, and "I am your dream he man" (muscle bound ken doll) and then they start sooking. Could you do a female to male profile perspective poem? I'd love to see what your eyes can offer us in that area :)

-THE NICE GUY PROFILE- ( or why don't she write? )
I used to be a boyscout, But now I am a man, A patriot who's devout, I just buy American!

Now honey why no reply? I told you you look sexy! My offer dont you deny! You stupid girls perplex me!
So if you will not date me, It's just cause you're a commie! You have no right to hate me! Just like your M.I.L.F. wh0re mommie!
That was the Nice guy portion of the challenge. Now for the Macho Stud part. Which I call; ( what else? ) Macho Stud!
- MACHO STUD - ( Also known as "ladies you owe me!" hahahaha,....)
Damn oh damn you know I'm hot! Let me show you all I got! Can't you see I've got it made? Kneel before me, I need laid!
I am sexier than God, Feast your eyes upon my bod! Hotter than Banderez, Pitt, I make Gipson look like shit!
I'm too hot to need much brain, Just the best, I cant explain! Shuck those clothes and get in line! For five minutes you'll be mine!
C'mon girls I'm so exciting, How come none of you are writing? Are you deaf or dumb or blind? Take a peek at my behind!
Man you girls are really stupid! I was sent to you by Cupid! Your loss, I'm too good for you! Too bad I dont come in two!
hahahaha,... Okay I believe that this was the way you were trying to have me shoot for. If I am wrong let me know and we'll try something new. Take care Salty!

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/23/2006 9:59:58 AM | I really get a kick out of the folks one the site men and women that I have met. Most are really good folks! Some a little scary but hey,... it's all good! hahahahaa,.... Anyway this goes out to my favorite gender, women! I love you ladies! I want you ladies! You scare the daylight out of me on occassion, but I probably deserved it! Here's to you.
- IN HONOR OF ALL THE LADIES ON PoF! -
Raise your cups and raise your glasses' To these creatures fair, Love your minds, your hearts, ( your as s es! ), All the thoughts you share!
Some of you are really picky, And to that I say; Who would want to land a sickie? Better just to wait!
Some of you are really flirty, That's fine by me too, It can be fun to think dirty, I'm not judging you.
Some of you are oh so sad now, And it tears my heart, Knowing life's been really bad, ouww! Needing a fresh start.
Some gals are big and beautiful, Kind, Fun, and witty, And to their guys they're dutiful, Clever, wild, and pretty!
Some are so shy and hesitate, Wanting to write you, Quiet, unsure, so they debate, If you'll want them too?
Some are outspoken and real bold, Laying it out there, Better listen! Their word is gold! Good thing that they care!
Some of you girls are lesbians, And I cannot lie, When I see some of the sick men, I can understand why!
Some of you I find really hot, Others are fine inside, But I like all for what you've got, Not for what you're denied!
So here's to all of you women! Dear to my liking! To romance, and sex, and great friends, You've all touched this Viking!
- Erik -
To all the ladies who write me, think of me, encourage me, visit my threads, love me, want me, pick on me, and are my most excellent friends, sorry you have to put up with the jerks here and there, but thank you for being my friends, and know that there are some nice guys ( er,... not like the above poem a few poems back! Gulp! hahahaha ) who are here, and I, and they as well, really do appreciate ALL of you! Women are awesome! You make the world a brighter place! Thanks for all the little things that make life better!

| Erik the Viking's Poetry and other gems for PoF. Posted: 8/23/2006 7:25:48 PM | Yon Erik is a lady's man He knows what makes us tick While others try and blind us with a smile or smart word trick
He has some depth and character And wit does he display And I for one am glad that I have wandered in his way
He makes me smile and gathers frowns and throws them to the wind I read the first one to the last, and just sat here and grinned
"U" rock
