- THE EMPTY HOUSE -

There are only echos
Of silence in my place
How I miss your morning joy
Your light that brought me grace

The house has lost that feeling
No longer feels like home
The tears and lump inside my throat
I feel numb and alone

Your eyes will always be seen
In dreams and thoughts of heart
And though your body's resting
We'll never be apart

- GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE -

I wake to feel the warming light
In foggy mind and cloudy sight
The rays that press agains't the blind
To warm my heart and wake my mind

The morning fresh with open air
The paradise of what is there
The beauty of my warming day
To grow the dreams and make them stay

Erik, I was very moved by your two beautiful poems to Var. I cried at both. I know something of the space you feel. I am so grateful that Var had you... that you had Var.

Thank you Gretchen. It's so funny because sometimes I guess we never realize just how strong the impact of our pets are. I love and have loved my dog so much, but she was so much more than just a dog to me. She was a great part of my life. I thought of her as my little girl more so than just my dog. Her passing left a bigger void in my life than I could have seen coming. I owed her so much and you know, dogs and animals are so great because they give of themselves in such a pure way. There is a sweetness and loyalty and connection that is magical.

I am grateful to have had such a wonderful friend and companion for so long. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on my poems to her.

Not sure if this is the forum for this, but I want to share something on loss and love and the perspective that having both brings to our lives that have carried me through some losses of my own:

a man is placed upon the steps, a baby cries
and high above the church bells start to ring
and as the heaviness the body, oh, the heaviness settles in
somewhere you can hear a mother sing

then it's one foot, then the other as you step out onto the road
how much weight? how much weight?
then it's how long? and how far?
and how many times before it's too late?

calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
calling all angels
calling all angels
we're cryin' and we're hurtin'
and we're not sure why...

and every day you gaze upon the sunset
with such love and intensity
it's almost... it's almost as if
if you could only crack the code
then you'd finally understand what this all means

but if you could, do you think you would
trade in all the pain and suffering?
ah, but then you'd miss
the beauty of the light upon this earth
and the sweetness of the leaving

calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
callin' all angels
callin' all angels
we're tryin'
we're hopin'
we're hurtin'
we're lovin'
we're cryin'
we're callin'
'cause we're not sure how this goes

~Jane Siberry "Calling All Angels"

Many blessings to you and Var,
Gretchen

Thanks Gretchen. That's a really nice poem.

- IN THE CLOUDS -

In the clouds there rises light
In the clouds so far from sight
In the heavens up above
From the themes of life and love

In the clouds there lies a dream
Fed behind the vapor scene
In the lofty place of storm
Where the rains and mist will form

In the clouds Valhalla knows
Places where the old Gods grow
Rainbows form to paint the sky
Bridge that mortals are denied

In the clouds the eagles soar
Wafting thermals lifting more
Birds and Gods and dreams of men
Drifting in the clouds again

- SEEKING -

The longing of fingers that seek to entwine
The hand of another to yet join mine
The thoughts of a spirit of mirrored soul
The path of the smile that makes me whole

Who knows when the forces shall then align
The minds drawn together by strange design
An eye looking back to see deep within
A smile on her lips that seek to win

A matching of heart and mind and will
The drawing of breath that bodes no ill
A treasure discarded in foolish waste
The chance to unite in better taste

Oh for the longings that stir inside
A mind like my own to swallow all pride
A touch for the warmth that both must share
The magic of two who are locked in the stare

- THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRITMAS ( VIKING VERSION ) -

Twas the night before Christmas and all on the shore
All the English were sleeping, some with a loud snore
The the priests were all nestled up snug in their beds
With visions in latin that danced through their heads

The nuns in their gowns and friars in caps
Had just settled down for the long winter naps
When out on the shore there arose such a clatter
Some sprang from their beds to see what was the matter?

They rushed to the windows, threw open the sashes
For fires were burning, the gate was in ashes!
And what to their wondering eyes did they see?
A whole bunch of Vikings just in from the sea

They spoke then strange words and went straight to work
They hewed the great doors and then with a jerk
They entered the church and rushed in the place
They looted and pillaged and gave the nuns chase!

Then taking their prisoners along in great rows
All fettered and yoked and in their night clothes
They laughed as they left then, on back to their ship
With much loot and slaves to pay for the trip

"On Hakon, on Jonas, On Bjorn, and On Fin!
On Erik, and Magnus, let the rowing begin!"
And they heard them exclaim as they rowed 'cross the seas
"Merry Christmas to Norsemen, let's do as we please!"

- A STUDY IN WOMAN -

Tantilizing creature piqueing the mind
Eye catching curves as seen from behind
A smile to tear away at the strong heart
Eyes of the predator luring a start

Voice like the music that man loves best
Drawn to her fire, torn to the test
Ice in her anger, pain in her fears
Loathing to bring forth wrath or her tears

Speaking to his mind with her lips
Lost to her words he races and dips
Driven to passion, longing, and lust
Primal his needs, surged in the thrust

Innocent seeming and yet not so
Able to rule him if he wont know
Graceful and soft with her fine hair
Igniting romance, drawn to her stare

Once they brought cooties, now they bring bliss
Ever exciting and yet amiss
Oh what a splendid gender is she
Ever heart open, yet mystery

If he could speak to her in the light
Knowning her dreams from dawn til night
Then what a blessing to have her hand
Love between both of them as nature planned

wanted to put this somewhere.....didn't find a thread for death...hope you don't mind my leaving it here....thanks for the well wishes my friend....time....it all just takes time...

i keep waiting for him
to come walking through that door
i keep waiting for him
to throw the playstation controller on the floor

again

but he never will

and no matter what i feel
or how much his brother cries
no matter how much his mother "breaks down"
no matter the tears that fall from many eyes

his purpose has been served

this leaves me a bit unnerved
another breath of life was well deserved
and with 27 years under his belt
he will never know how a father or a groom has fealt

ryan
spoke softly
always

the last two beers that he would buy me
were due to unspoken understanding
and my heart.....in his absence....
has been awfully demanding....

of my eyes

for what will never be
i cry
yet another
good man has died

RIP Ryan ~ 12/20/08

Erik,
light the yule log
hoist the sails on the longship
fill the helmets with grog
and sing a merry song!

A Viking Christmas Carol

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the Hall
Not a creature was stirring, not warrior nor thrall.
And I in my armor, my shield and my helm
Was drunker than anyone else in the Realm.

I staggered upstairs and fell into bed
While four quarts of mead were ablaze in my head.
Then up from below came the sounds of a brawl
So I grabbed up my axe and ran down to the Hall.

I missed the last step and crashed down in a heap
Thinking, "Why can't those low-lifes downstairs go to sleep!"
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But two brawny strangers, wielding mallet and spear.

I said to myself, "We'll soon have them beat!"
Then I noticed ten warriors laid out at their feet.
I gave out a yell and leapt into the fray...
I'll always regret my poor choice of that day.

For the one laid his hammer to the side of my nose
And up, up, up to the rafters I rose.
Then came a lone frightened voice from the floor,
"Those are no mortal warriors -- that's Odin and Thor!"

Then they looked at each other and they said, "Battle's done.
Now they know who we are, it no longer is fun."
Then Thor raised his hammer, and his elbow he bent,
And with a loud crash, through the ceiling they went.

I crawled through the Hall and flung open the door,
Not really sure that I'd seen them before.
The snow bathed in starlight, the moon like a glede,
I saw them ride off on an eight-legged steed.
And I heard them exclaim, 'ere they flew out of sight,
"TO HELA WITH CHRISTMAS, WE JUST LOVE A GOOD FIGHT!"

- VEGETARIANS GONE BAD -

I hear the herbivors preaching the green
It's yummy and good for you and oh so clean
A great way of dining and good to the taste
Then why are you sporting a six inch wide waist?

You say that you're lean and trim but not hectic
I differ to say that you are anhorexic!
I've seen fatter folks from films of world war two
I call it starvation, you say it's not true!

You say you look sexy and fun and jiggy,
I say you mean skinny, in fact downright twiggy!
Pandas and cows and sheep may eat grass
But they are evolved to whereas I'll just pass

A salad is fine or some veggies for dinner
But if that's all you eat all you get is thinner!
I question nutrition when you're skin and bone
And as for strict veggies I'll leave that alone

For I am a carnivor and I feel good
Protien helps grow brain cells just as it should
So if you think that eating meat is a sin
By all means just eat plants and live life stick thin

- Erik -

P.S. Apparently there are many levels of Vegetarians, and this poem is written for the strict plants only folks who can hide from the world by standing next to a street sign post. I have not yet seen a strictly plant vegetarian who did not look like they were borderline "famine victim" in their physical appearance.
I think that you need to have protien in ones diet among other things, but hey, that's just me. I guess that the levels are, 1. Strictly plant eaters. 2. Plant and Egg eaters. 3. Plant, Egg, Poultry, and Fish eaters. ( somewhere in here some of these folks do include dairy products ) 4. ( My favorite Vegetarians ) Everything except "red meat".

- MISSPLACED MISTLETOE -

Where the heck is the Mistletoe?
Where did I put that sprig?
Can one use something else or no?
Will the Kissing Gods flip their wig?

Where the heck is the Mistletoe?
I swear, what a terrible blunder!
Then a kiss to my surprise,...
Guess what I am standing under?

Eric, just wanted to say
I sure enjoy reading your poems
I laugh my ass off some days
And really think of some
Of the deep insights of your ways
So keep on keepin on
And let the wind of thought in your sails
Guide us all in our travails
