Actually, mencer, this was never intended as a forum for someone to tell me how atheists are "funny" or to insinuate we are dumb. I am an atheist. I will, for the rest of my life, continue being an atheist. I have to see to beleive and from what I see, not only is there no proof of a god, there isn't even a slight indication of one. This was not a debate of atheism vs. belief, it was a question asking if you believe you would change your life, your values, if you were to become an atheist. It had nothing to do with deciding which was right and which was wrong. So, before you tell others to do so, maybe YOU should stick to the subject.

If there is no chaos, there can be no order. Just like there can be no light without darkness.
Though I will agree, everything exists for a reason. However the reason is not because of any intelligence, but because of cause and effect. I exist because my parents had sex and my father impregnated my mother. The reason I continue to live is because I do not wish to kill myself.
I suspect you have the exact same reason for existing.

But to get back on topic: If everything is done by the divine reason of God then logically there is no morality. There can be no right or wrong if everything that happens, good or bad, is supposed to happen.

Well atheists still believe, they just believe in Nissan rather than St. Paul.

There have been times in my life I was periodically an atheist, between religions.

Many atheists, such as I was, gradually find the Celtic Faiths, the Celtic Religions, going back to my people's ways.

Life is all about change and sometimes how we change is through prayer such as "I hope this car starts...come on Nissan...!!!!" etc.

Alot of us are Animists between religions, but we call ourselves atheists, at least that would be my observation.

The reason I continue to live is because I do not wish to kill myself.

well thats not the only reason we go on....in fact (for believers) we dont really have a choise because creation's ultimate goal is to find God. we were created to seek God, its actually the reason he doesnt reveal himself or the journey would be over from the beginning.

But to get back on topic: If everything is done by the divine reason of God then logically there is no morality. There can be no right or wrong if everything that happens, good or bad, is supposed to happen.

everything is not determined. if you know for sure that it will rain tomorrow does that mean that your fate is sealed too? there are things that are bound to happen but it doesnt change the fact that we all have freedom of choice. right or wrong is actually the core of the "challenge" to seek God. in the Bible (and the Coran) , the only way to God is by the respect of his commandments....its the only way to understand him (and its very difficult, but nothing of value is easy to find).
there is no way to explain all of this in a "rational way" because there is no rational, its a mistake, the world is God's imagination and he didnt create his world out of "rationality" but out of wisdom rationality is a trap. but its very normal to fall in this trap, its part of the journey to seek the truth.

John, I call myself Lord Dave because I like the sound of it. Nothing more. It has no sense of title to me, no meaning of godlyness. Infact, I peferr just Dave, but that sounds borring and uninteresting when viewed as a user name.
But I do get the irony.

You will never find god thru logic, you will never find what god is like through logic, you will never get close to god with logic.. thats what the whole faith thing is about that u discarded, ignorantly and vainly so.

I have no time for your insipid rantings of logical horse sh*t.

I know I will never expereince god through logic. Just like I will never experience a drug induced hallucination through logic. I am not ignorant of what I throw away. I'm throwing away easy happiness, a purpose in life, and ignorance. Ignorance is, after all, bliss. However, I chose the pain of knowledge.

But you sound angry at my logic and reasoning and that makes me happy. It shows your an intelligent person. A person who knows I'm right and hates me for it.

and mencer:
Wisdom is gained through experience. God could not have gained the wisdom to create the universe unless he'd done it before.

If I turned athiest....I think maybe I would stop looking for any answers because to me there would be none. I was sort of raised anglican(which I guess is just an offshoot of christianity...same bible and all). I later turned athiest because of the evil this "god" created. Not to mention the fact we were supposedly created just for its amusement and to worship. That made absolutely no sense to me so I figured it was wrong and there was nothing after this. Of course back then I had no idea about the other beliefs in this world. I think Taoism and Buddhism are my fav's, but take what I feel are the good points in all religions. My true religion likely won't be revealed to me until I die(possibly not even then). That's why I choose not to believe in a god just because someone else does. They found their god, why can't I find mine? Of course I have found mine. It's me, you and everyone else that makes up my god. Still don't know what that means in the end of it all, but I sure don't fear it and I will do what I consider good because I love. Not because I fear retribution, but because I don't wish pain and suffering on any of my brothers and sisters. Has nothing to do with some god someone else tells me I should believe in.

Those folks who think that we will all go on a rampage and kill and molest each other just because there is no god should really double check their morals......It could mean that secretly they wish to cause pain. If that's the case I hope they never lose their fear of god lest they hurt someone.

we were created to seek God, its actually the reason he doesnt reveal himself or the journey would be over from the beginning.

So if he won't reveal himself, do you admit the book is a fraud?

Call me the seeker.

Hey Man,

Did you ever hit that one on the head. It was chopice that got us all in our own predicaments from the beginning of times and will til the end of times to. God has many meanings to many people. Jesus has much meaning too. The ultimate is what you/I everyone believes within our whole body/mind/spirit in connection to the univers and one another.

I am an atheist so if I became an atheist I would probably feel relieved that I could now f*ck women with impunity, kick bunnies to death without retribution, nick candy from a store until my fingers bleed, and the best part, I could lie in court until I'm blue in the face.

But then I would go to prison for rape, animal cruelty, theft, and perjury. Damn society and its civil laws. They take all the fun out of being an atheist.

I feel no need to seek any god. I am only an insignificant part of a infinite universe. My actions here on Earth probably do little or nothing to influence events a billion-light-years away. I, and every other animal on this planet, has little purpose other than to procreate, eat, shit, and die.

And it scares a lot of people to think that their life has no purpose beyond that. It's probably the most frightening thought in existance.

People seek god(s) as noise to fill a silent existance.

Or enough people believe they do, anyway.

People can figure out some pretty weird things about life, write them down and have millions of the people believe 'it's the way', but that doesn't mean these people weren't flawed like everyone else.

I have a little experience with this since I was a Christian and am now an Atheist. For the most part my morals didn't change. What did change I think was positive in nature. I no longer viewed women as second class citizens. I no longer thought gays should be persecuted. I no longer thought that it was okay to kill non-Christians (as a Christian I had no moral problems with the Inquisition, the Crusades, the Salem Witch Trials, people who kill doctors who perform abortions, etc.) because of their religion. I no longer thought that only Christians should be allowed to hold public office. I came to view sex outside of marriage as normal and healthy.

are they that cunning? look at their way of life and you'll know if they can be trusted or not...a prophet lives a very strick life of devotion, thats why they were recognized as prophets.

I take it you were there witnessing their life style then?

And yes, I am that cunning. Thank you for noticing.

Being atheist doesn't mean you have no conscience or code of ethics to regulate your behavior. It seems a little sad that people need some kind of authority figure to "make" them do right under pain of punishment in Hell. Or Walmart.

Personal responsibility. Live it, learn it, love it.

That's my opinion, for what it's worth.

No doubt. However just because someone did something great does not make them a prophet. Martin Luther King Jr. is not considered a prophet. George Washington is not considered a Prophet. Abraham Lincon is not considered a prophet.
Yet they all did great things did they not? They were all alot like moses in a way. Each one going in and writing what they felt was a wrong, and bringing their people out of opression. From the African American Rights movement to the independance from england and the end of slavery.
What makes them not prophets is because they weren't said to be motivated by God. And when a book(books) sole purpose is to explain god, I feel it's too biased for an accurate account of what happened.

Also I can't read hebrew.

Is L. Ron Hubbard considered a prophet? I suppose he is. How did he get to be one?

Sorry, Dave's post got me wondering.

Oy... bubee...don't start reading the Prophets and the Torah in Hebrew

Could lead to Judaism...

*starts dancing Hora* Hava...nagila Hava...nagila Hava nagila venis'mecha!

In reference to the OP's question... for the most part, I draw my sense of morality from non-divine sources...at present I don't rule out the possibility of the divine. SO were I to become an atheist I guess my morality as such would generally remain unaffected. I firmly accept the court order as presented in the Simpsons to have meant that not only do religion and science have to stay 100 yards away from each other at all times, but that civil laws and morality are essentially humanistic constructs that can evolve and develop quite well outside the framework of spirituality.

Christians who say this just want an excuse to be bad. When they do something bad, they claim they were atheists then. When they start doing good, they say it was because they found God.

Some christians have really hard lives before they become christians and their faith has encouraged and helped them alot what is wrong with that, I thinkthat is a good thing that thier faith has helped them. Its given them moral guidance and support in their lives. I don,t like to think of anyone unhappy and if its helped good. It does not mean they are judgeing you because you think are a consciencious person and not a christian. No one is saying that. They are just grateful for the healing which they have recieved.
Most christians come from good backgrounds whre they have been brought up with chiristians values since they wre born and therefore becoming a christian has not had such an impact.
Their is no love like the love of God, God is always their and never lets us down people can they can be weak but not God. Reserch has shown that the happiest people are christians.
I guess we are grateful but not being a christian you would not understand what it means to us. Research has also shown that as much as an athiest does not believe a person with faith will believe people actually die for their faith.
At the end of the day God loves you whether you believe or not and he chose you to be born. God is real, you cannot see electricity but its their.
Did you know as well that hell is so bad that even the demons did not want to go their they asked Jesus to send them into the pigs, do you honestly want to take the risk of going to hell, you could get run over tommorrow, why take the risk. What do you have to lose but everything to gain. It makes more sense than being an athiest anyday.
