| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 3:40:23 PM | I hate you all...
I'm stuck in Edmonton, in class, DROOLING over a Super A&A Schwarma.
BURN IN HELL! :P | |
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 3:48:42 PM | | the best donairs inthe world are back home in NS just can't duplicate them out here for some reason. I recently found a place that does donair pizza's...REALLY good but still not like back home. | |
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 3:52:04 PM | Agreed!! I have yet to find a donair "out here" like they are back home!! Where did you find this donair pizza? | |
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 3:53:21 PM | | it's just a little place in beddington just off deerfoot called Seniore's Pizza. | |
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 3:54:40 PM | | Thanks...I'll have to try that. | |
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 5:03:09 PM | Where have you been hibernating Sambo???
Donairs have been around longer than I have!!
The ones on the grounds at Stampede are always worth a lineup, but not the exhorbatant price one pays there!
Thinly carved meat (uasually beef) that is slow roasted on a spit ( it is standing and the juices slowly ooze down the sides so it stays moist) then slatered with variations of sauces and usually rolled into a pita style bread.
They are all over the place in Calgary!!
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 5:51:12 PM | yes, the best donairs are definitely from back home in Nova Scotia!
they rule.
A large donair is about the size of a nerf football. You can eat the meat for about an hour and not get to the pita. Don't mention the sweet sauce and tomato and onion on that sum****.
I heard that the Burger Baron serves "Halifax Donairs" up here in Edmonton. Have yet to try one tho.
Anybody try the Baron's donair?
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 6:20:33 PM | [q]Richards Donair in Fort Saskatchewan is awesome[/q]
I disagree.... but to each their own
Try the SubJoint in the Fort.... Where you get to choose your toppings (cheese, tomatoe's, cumcumbers, onions, green peppers, hot pepper ect...) and sauce (your typical sweet sauce, dill, hmm what else..soo many choices!)
where as at Richards you are stuck with the typical sauce... and topping... onions.. tomotoe's.... BORING!!
WAY better in my humble opinion!
There is a place like the SubJoint in Edmonton.... It's called Moonlight Cafe it's on Jasper Ave across from the Audrey's book store.... soo about 107th. YUMMMY
I have yet to find anything comparable to these toooo places!!
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 8:10:06 PM | There's a donair place in the Shawnessy area right beside the M & M's and the Marble Slab.
It's family run, and to the above comment, that place is SMOKING hot all the time.
But yummy in the tummy donairs, family run. Man is very very nice .. and they make lots of other stuff tooo...
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/20/2007 9:00:39 PM | A&A 20th ave and 13st n.w. good Calgary shwarma edmonton trail and 9th ave... Better - best in calgary. Don't fall for his attempts to get you to try his HOT sauce... Oh my - I like hot, that's stuffs hotter than pure habanero sauce. | |
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/21/2007 7:06:30 PM | Calgary shwarma edmonton trail and 9th ave... Better - best in calgary. Don't fall for his attempts to get you to try his HOT sauce... Oh my - I like hot, that's stuffs hotter than pure habanero sauce. Thanks cgyreefer, I tried them tonight - I gave him a hard time about his hot sauce too, he laughed and said word travels fast! I like their pickled turnips on the donair and I also bought some of their Samosas to try - it was all very good the samosa were not greasy at all. Next time I'm trying the chicken with garlic sauce, that looked good! He has a menu online too!
My vote for the best still goes to the little hole in the wall in Edmonton (god I wish I remembered the name, I think it was donair express on 118th ave NW, I know it was on 118th) ahhhhh...the gems you find in the middle of the night driving around a city you don't know very well while searching for a hotel with vacancy...
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/21/2007 7:53:45 PM | Your very welcome - I love trying all these little family owned restaurants...
One of my employees got me with the hot sauce on my first visit - the owner put a bit on a pita... <- very close approximation of my face shortly thereafter!
Honestly, I hate to say it but I still miss Joma's in mchell... Donairs were really good - and the donair pizza... Where's the drooling smiley? I wonder if they'd fedex a pizza
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/21/2007 8:55:32 PM | "Although the best one I ever had was in Edmonton, a little place on the east side, can't remember the name of it to save my life but it was yummy....almost worth the trip up"
betcha it was "Charles Smart donairs" on 82 ave and 89 st!
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/22/2007 6:00:35 AM | Now here's a subject I can sink my teeth into!!!
Yes, the best are from back 'home' in NS! ,.,,ooh, la, la, King's on Quinpool Road, after those late nights at Historic Properties....yum! They were the kind that you sat on the curb and ate cause they oozzed with delicious sweet sauce and tonnes of meat! (ok, it was summer!) Keep it simple with the toppings please!
I have a great recipe for a homemade donair and sweet sauce....email me if ya want it!
Have heard that the 'Halifax Donairs' at the Trap and Gill are pretty killer too...must check that out when I'm not too busy dancing there!
Ciao | |
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/22/2007 6:49:04 AM | Celticsmiles....I tried to email you to get that recipe, but, I"m a girl. lol...any chance I could get that recipe? (and, the donairs at the Trap are pretty good)

| Donairs Posted: 3/22/2007 10:31:37 AM | Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...donairs.....
aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh..... (imagine Homer drooling)
I used to go to a great night club called Cabbagetown on Spring Garden Road in Halifax in like 1981 or so and right next door was a great donair shop. I would get 2 large with just meat and sauce. No onion or tomato. I always asked for extra sauce. It was awesome. The messier the better!
When I moved to Victoria, and later to Vancouver, all I could get was donair meat with Tzatziki sauce...WTF??? Who puts dill and garlic in donair sauce? Blasphemy I say. So, if you don't like the sauce that is so prevalent in the west, try this recipe.
1/2 can of carnation milk, 1/3 can of sugar and 1/4 can of white vinegar. Mix the milk and sugar together until dissolved. Then pour the entire portion of vinegar into the mix and quickly stir it about 2-3 strokes...IMPORTANT...only 2-3. After a few seconds, the vinegar curdles the milk and it gets clumpy and congealed. Sounds lovely doesn't it? Trust me, I got the recipe from the guy that owned the best donair shop on Spring Garden Road in Halifax. Pour the sauce on your donair meat and eat yourself into ecstacy.
P.S. I agree with the posts about it being a meal for two...if your date isn't eating donairs too, you won't likely be gettin' any!
Cgyreefer: Gotta agree, your dog is awful cute lookin. Am I mistaken or is he actually smiling?
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/22/2007 11:09:14 AM | I just remembered...
A few years ago I flew from Halifax to Virginia Beach. The night before the flight, I bought 4 large donairs with just sauce. I had them in my briefcase so I could carry them on the flight and 'guard' them from those baggage handlers. Anyway, I hadn't even considered the fact that you can't import meat into the USA. When I got to customs, the customs guy opened my briefcase and almost fell backwards from the overpowering smell. He said something like "What the hell is the smell? And what are these foil wrapped things?" He must've thought they were huge bricks of hash or something...lol. Anyway, I opened one up and showed him. He said, "Sorry, Sir. You can't bring these into the USA". The b@57@rd was going to throw them away!!! I stood by the garbage can for about 15 minutes eating as much of that yummy stuff as I could. Sadly, I could only eat about 1 1/2 of them. I had to toss the rest. That was a sad, sad day...
|
| Donairs Posted: 3/22/2007 8:25:45 PM | Re: IMNOTTAKEN!!!
oh, my god you had me in stitches...I too was gonna say Cabbagetown, even Pepe's but who the heck was going to get it? You did! and yes, the place on Spring Garden, kitty corner to the Public Gardens, that placed rocked, what was the name again?
....NO KIDDING! that was my recipe too! ^^^ Sonya.. sorry about the exclusion in the profile, just fixed that one !
Ciao, I mean, Chow folks! my taste buds are watering for a good old fashioned donair cookoff!!!! anyone game?
|
| Aaaaaaaaaaaahhh...good times... Posted: 3/22/2007 9:21:28 PM | I don't remember the name of that place. I wish I could. The owner was an awesome guy. He eventually learned my name and always knew what I wanted. There was always a line-up and the food rocked. I remember buying a donair from there one night and I put it on the passenger seat for the drive home to dirt-mouth. I went around a turn a bit fast (I drove a sports car and often went a little bit faster than I should) and watched my donair sllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidddeeeeee out of the foil wrapper. It hit the door and everything slid down and landed between the seat and the door. I pulled over to the curb, opened the door and ate everything right off the floor of my car. Screw the 5 second rule!!! It doesn't apply to donairs.
Hey, how about the Garden View Restaurant just down the road...that was great too for a feast after a night of drinkin' and dancin'. Now there's another thing you can't get anywhere but Nova Scotia - those yummy meat filled egg rolls! Out west here, they are full of veggies (mostly cabbage and sprouts).
I think I may have to book a ticket back to N.S. for a week or so.

| Donairs Posted: 3/23/2007 9:30:17 PM |

| Donairs Posted: 4/16/2007 11:13:10 PM | | Best ever is in Marda Loop, across from Scotia bank. Its on 33 Ave. I am always in that area, I am working on a few homes I have there. The other one that is delish, is across from Chinook next to the liquor store. I live near there, but normally I would head to Keiths Deli, their sandwhiches are the best. Its in the strip mall behind red lobster. | |
