I have like 5 shotguns, 7 22's, some rifles. I hunt alot, so I use them. Some are collector items, and some are for my kids. I actually have a 22 with the same name as my last name Quackenbush

Has anybody read in the news about the 4 year old that shot his 2 year old brother over an argument about toys?
Though all of the details haven't been released, apparently the 4 year old decided to end the dispute by shooting the 2 year old. According to the story, the 4 year old knew his mom had a gun and kept it in her purse.

So my next question: How many of you have guns and teach your children about them at EARLY AGES?

that's one reason gun locks are a good idea.

ever hear about kids (very young ages) stealing their parents cars? should we teach kids how to drive cars??? no, you take precautions so things like this don't happen. i plan on having a lock on every gun i own and also keeping them in a locked gun case.

just want to add to this... i think you should explain to your kids that guns are dangerous. you should teach them the dangers about guns. then later when you feel they are old enough... you teach them how to use them properly and when it's ok to use them. that's my 65486097 cents.

keep the gun and the ammo in different rooms and the gun is never loaded.. We had a stick rules.. Before you bring your gun in the house or hunting tent. you must rack the gun empty of shells.. Check the clip and look through the barrel.. If I had kids around I would have them under lock and key..

My kids know all about them and they dont and wont touch the guns. They are 8 and 6, I believe in teaching them about them and the respect for them at an early age. Make things easier in the future.

Don't we teach kids how to drive cars? Anyway...I've known of kids that have stolen cars way before they turned 16, so kids often try to go after the "forbidden" things that aren't for them.

As far as keeping the guns in a locked gun case, would that defeat the purpose of keeping it for "safety"? This isn't specifically targeted at you, but anyone who keeps them for such a reason. I'm just curious about that, because it seems to me you'd be at a disadvantage if someone's in your living room and your gun's in a case locked away. Someone before mentioned the time it would take to shoot an intruder. How much time would it take to get a gun out of the gun case and protect your family?

first off, i was talking about VERY young kids stealing their parents car... under the age of 10. there was a kid recently in the news for doing this, he was around 8 i think.

i don't plan on owning them for protection. that's what alarms are for. and anyways, there are theives and killers that can get into your house without you knowing anyways, hard to grab your gun when you're not awake ;)
i personally have knives in my room, if anyone gets into my apartment and i hear them i'll have a knife in between my back and boxers (in a sheath) and a bat in my hand while i'm standing next to the doorway waiting for them to walk by :) but i might be getting a 12 gauge for my b-day, all i'd have to do is c0ck it (is that the right term?!?) and that should scare the sh*tout of them... if not i guess i'm screwed, lol.

Don't own a gun, but my ex had at least 15+ guns and taught me how to shoot. It was a difficult adjustment for me coming from Britain where our police aren't even armed, but learned to appreciate guns and people who are respectful of them and their power.

Would like to buy a gun (pistol or revolver) for protection (ever been to Memphis???!!) but no idea what is best for a girl with limited experience. Any suggestions appreciated...

With my mom and step-dad both being police officers, I learned at a very early age
1) to respect them and
2) how to use them...I think I was 5 the 1st time I ever shot my mom's pistol and 9 when I shot a shotgun (knocked me on my ass too) and rifle

I have my mom's old service weapon (.38 special), a blow gun, and 12-gauge shotgun.

Having young kids in the house, not only do they know not to mess with them, they're locked up so they can't mess with them and they're not loaded. The ammo is locked up in a different place.

My boys have both shot the pistol....I don't dare let them touch the shotgun just yet. They know what guns can do.

Just my opinion....I think if you have a gun in the house with kids (1) education is the key (2) things don't look so tempting to touch if they're ALLOWED to touch (under supervision of course) and (3) keep it locked up

It's such a tragedy when kids get hold of guns and don't know the damage they can cause

My ex- father-in-law was a cop for years, then taught law enforcement. He was obsessive about gun safety and ensured the same in my ex-husband....hence my respect and understanding now.

My ex-FIL also told me to forget the movies and the aiming for the leg or arm thing. He said with my limited gun experience if someone breaks in aim for the central mass and shoot a minimum of twice until they stop moving. Scary, but appropriate advice I guess.

okay, I see paintball don't count, neither do super soakers.

Got a 410 b.s., 22 rif, 7mm rif, and 30-30 lever. All of which are hunting tools, and none are weapons.

That depends on how they are used. A car can be a weapon in the ritght circumstance.

I am not talking about provision. I am talking about crazy statements that have no bearing in reality. For example I knew someone that said he could kill a deer with just a knife and several of us bet him that he could not do it. So he climbed a tree that stradled a deer trail and waited for one to come along. About dawn, it was the middle of the night when he went up the tree, a deer passed under him and he dropped on to the deer. That deer beat him to a pulp and he almost did not get away. Do you think that he killed it? No! He was panicing to much to keep his wits about him. I'm not saying that something like that can not be done but it is a very rare person that could do something even remotely like that and the bravado that I read here sounds like pure baloney to me. So like I said SHOW ME. Talk is cheap.

the "no" you got from darren was his way of letting you know he wasn't going to play your silly, macho game. his point was that people are dangerous without weapons, and he didn't say anything about deer. are we having testosterone surges?
