I am terrfied of spiders.

When me and my ex partner bought our flat together in London, We stayed at her mother's place for a few months before moving in so I could refurbish it. She thought I was going a bit over the top with some of the detail I went to............covering the floorboards with 6mm plywood sheets.........and caulking between them. Caulking at the tops and bottoms of skirting, all penetrations were sleeved and filled with structural foam. All air bricks were removed and replaced......with fine mesh behind them. even holes at light fittings were caulked.
She never twigged that I was spider proofing the place!!!!!
It worked too, in 7 years I saw only one spider, and it had got in through an open door, lol

Told her it was for acoustic insulation

I hate spiders too and this being an old building means its prone to them.
Daddy long legs are worse as they are like flying spiders and get in your hair!
Most flying insects i hate, and birds!...they look great from a distance but pet birds that fly around peoples living rooms freak me out and pigeons in town!
Baked beans too..not sure why but they scare the hell out of me.

I made a huge step towards curing my fear of spiders at the weekend. Visiting pets corner at Longleat, I held a tarantula. It felt completely different from what I was expecting, its feet were like tiny little paws.
On the downside, when we got home, there was a leggy monster in the hall, which I had to deal with; my daughter telling me that after all my crowing about the tarantula I could bloody well get rid of that one.
I did too, still worried that it would run up my sleeve though

You're doing better than me Hula! Went to Edinburgh Butterfly Farm when I was in primary school, also held a rather beautiful tarantula, was one of the only ones brave enough.

Did absolutely feck all to cure my phobia of the commoner garden british house spiders and those great big garden spiders scare the sh1t outta me.

Seems my brain didn't make the association of beautiful hairy spider in a tank with those that run across the floor when you're enjoying a cup of tea and biscuit while watching Location, Location, Location!

I've always been scared of heights, even as a kid. No idea why.

I have a completely irrational fear of cameras. I get nervous and anxious in front of them and I find it very hard to actually hold one and take a photo. No idea why that is either.... but the things actually do scare me!

Resurrected this thread because I have discovered a new phobia...

I have Whacky waving inflatable tube man ophobia ..

Have you seen those bloody awful things? They have them outside shops and garages? About 15 feet tall wavy arms and long tuby body that flaps and wobbles all over the place?

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OJahnEyd69M

I swear one is going to lean over the pavement and smack me one on the head... I have to go right to the edge of the path and rush past the horrid things... Ewww eww ew.....

I used to be absolutely terrified of spiders. One day my ex was at work when I spotted one and so waited until he came home. Unfortunately it disappeared but I mentioned it to him and he replied " I bet it was a tiny little one and you are exagarating" So next day when it reappeared just before tea time I made a point of watching it until he came home. To say his face was a picture was an understatement is putting it mildly well he said " I am not moving that big ugly monster, NO WAY"

Glad I'm not scared of needles, have do my own medicine injections.

Petrified of snakes.... Really scared to the point i cant even watch them on the telly.
Also really not too keen on boats but only big boats, i really really cannot bear it when you walk along the side of a marina or a dock and can see the bit from the front of the boat and then look down and can see it going down into the water. Ages ago i remember looking down at the front of the Cutty Sark and feeling really really dizzy at the sheer size of the boat and that started it off.

Part of my bluddi post has been removed!

I said 'i'm needle phobic even though i have to inject myself as i'm DIABETIC too'

Also ' i'm not bothered sticking needles in others AS I'M A NURSE!'

Whoever chose to think that statement is offensive etc needs their head read

Thought I'd bring back this thread as I have been watching the programme, Britain's weirdest Phobia's. Some are really strange - knees, banana's etc.
I also read an article about a woman who has had a Santa phobia since the age of three, how awful that must be for her at this time of year.

I actually don't think I have any at all.

Most things really, cities, shopping centres, anywhere without a direct exit outside, tall places, small animals, large animals. I love deserted beeches poking dead things with a stick, countryside, small roads and driving under 50 mph.

I chose not to watch it because any programme about phobias upsets me - whilst the phobics portrayed may not have the same phobia as me, I find I identify with their distress.

And at last - someone who says they have no phobias! Having read some of the comments on here, I feel sure that they are fears rather than phobias........ a true phobia is absolutely awful because it has no rationality, whereas many fears can be substantiated.

Most phobias are irrational fears that we are either taught or learn as part of a life experience.
These can be quite easily overcome by visiting an NLP Practioner.
If your phobia is affecting your quality of life I would suggest a session, what have you got to lose?

Just for the record I have done an NLP course and was taught the skills to deal with phobias but I dont practice.

My phobia is balloons and as I only encounter them infrequently, I've never sought to address it, although I know I should. The thought of doing so brings about a feeling of nausea though, just like the phobia itself!

I have a phobia of travelling on coaches. If they have a loo, (that isn't locked) then I'm ok, but if not I want to pee desperately within 30 seconds of the bus pulling off.

I break into a cold sweat at the very thought of it, bowels churning - the works. Just could not travel on one if you paid me...

I used to have a really bad phobia of fires and getting burnt, but i managed to deal with that one when i had to pass my fire training in the navy.

I used to have a phobia of dogs due to being bitten as a child but ive dealt with that mostly and i only get a bit of fear if the dog growls at me.

I have a fear of getting struck by lightning, even though thunder storms dont scare me, I love to watch them from the comfort of my house, you wont find me out and about in one. If one starts while Im out I become really agitated and fractious until Im under shelter.
Quite happy to rescue anyone from spiders, will bring my own glass and piece of card.
