Stilton, I know it's been a few months since you posted this, but why do you need a dentist if you get pubic hair near your nose???

| Phobias Posted: 9/3/2009 1:50:51 PM | Jats you plagiarist, you just watched Mock the Week
I have various things I don't like but not sure they are on the phobic scale. I used to think I had a fear of heights but eventually realised it was a fear of hitting the ground at speed. I love flying (in planes as I don't have wings), have parascended, climbed an indoor climbing wall and abseiled down it ...................... but cannot climb a step ladder to get into my loft.
I was fine on the London Eye until it stopped mid flight and I had visions of having to climb out of the capsule, fortunately the engineers fixed the fault and prevented my heart attack happening

| Phobias Posted: 9/3/2009 2:02:07 PM | | So the quickest way to cause chaos at a POF meet is to bring along a big spider with a red nose? | |
|
| Phobias Posted: 9/3/2009 2:25:03 PM | Ugh phobias...I got two: Spiders and needles (injects and such). I just can't stand spiders, they just creeps the hell out of me. It's probable some childhood scare that was the reason for it (as most things are). When I was a kid I was sleeping on a bunk bed, and one night I woke up and saw this huge spider hanging over my head from its web and I just freaked. Since then..brrr. Needles I know is from my childhood, when I was very sick and they tried to get blood samples from me. Apparently I didn't agree with it and they had 4 people holding me while getting the blood. I guess that left a mark, since I just cant stand needles since then. Gotten better though, now I do allow the dentist to give me something before pulling out a tooth ;) At least this phobia is kinda beneficial, since I would never turn into a needle-junkie ;) | |

My mother got that, freaks out when the toilet is small, always have the door open (which is quite impractical when you have visitors). Can't even stand tents anymore, they are just too small for her.

| Phobias Posted: 9/3/2009 2:37:11 PM | I have developed a really bad fear of flying, I dunno if it could be classed as a phobia as I did actually fly to Malaga this year but had to be dragged kicking and screaming... I thought I was gonna die with fear and panic as the plane took off. I had also taken 6mg of diazapam prescribed by GP for that purpose AND nearly a bottle of wine and was still literally paralyzed with terror. I want to get over this as I love travelling and want to visit Bali next year as my best buddies wedding witness. (She met him on POF by the way!!) Has anyone else got over their fear of flying please and if so how? | |

I read somewhere that airlines do acclimatisation type courses to overcome this phobia, in much the same way as you can touch tarantulas to overcome arachnaphobia. It's a bit of hypnotherapy with CBT I think. Touch the plane, sit on the plane, go up in the plane type of thing.
Take the drugs without the alcohol, a set of head phones plug into the movies or music and SLEEP. You are more likely to have a car crash than a plane crash, so I am told, and think what it would mean to your friend to be at her wedding.

| Phobias Posted: 9/4/2009 12:23:04 AM | Not me, but my best mate has a fear of travel of any kind..She wont even go on the local bus unless we really have to.
She even canceled the family holiday to Blackpool a couple of years back as she was getting so worked up about travelling down the motorway in the car.

| Phobias Posted: 9/4/2009 1:08:16 AM | Hypnotherapy is great for flying phobia and most other phobias actually. honestly it can be so easy to sort some of these things out.
The only phobia I've got is of commitment. Shan't be getting hypnotised for that anytime soon though.

| Phobias Posted: 9/4/2009 1:23:09 AM | | It's not a fear of 'flying'.......it's a fear of crashing! | |

| Phobias Posted: 9/4/2009 1:31:58 AM | Message 147
It's not a fear of 'flying'.......it's a fear of crashing!
WRONG!!!!
It IS a fear of flying, crashing doesn't come in to the equation for the majority. Yes that fear of crashing may be a contributory factor, but it is the flying, being in the air, being enclosed in the small fuselage that is the phobia.
Anyway, whilst that message really didn't add anything to 'the discussion', my own fears are volcanoes, heights and ladies tights. If I cam across all three at the same time I would be a quivering wreck.

The OP asked me a question, and I answered it.
I noticed that you did the same.......
WRONG!!!!

How can you possibly claim that the quoted post is 'wrong'?
You have no idea how I view flying (I enjoy it, FYI) - my fear is of 'crashing', as plainly stated. Please don't tell me that I don't like being in planes!
