| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/4/2008 6:41:04 PM | My rottie Titan has his own pet rottie Teddy Bear, but he still thinks I am a Goddess
People comment on how my dogs never take there eyes off of me. Now that is love of the real kind.
Bullies are so cool. When I am too frail to handle rotties, I will switch to bullies. Ah.......maybe I will sneak one in before then.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/4/2008 9:37:15 PM | I've got 3 dogs; a fox terrier (terror, really), a Labrador retriever, and a Siberian huskie. Sadie, my huskie, is pictured on my profile. Last month I picked up a pair of stray Siberians that I'm fostering until forever homes are found for them. Between them, and my two cats, I've got my hands full for the time being. Of course, I'd love to keep these new two, but even with a big house and yard, I've got limits I impose on myself.
It is a lot of fun to come home to howling dogs, though.
I was 'raised' by a Border collie, and sometimes I joke that it's the reason I turned out as well-adjusted as I did. As I'm typing this I've got the Lab at my feet with a cat on top of her, asleep, and one of the Sibbies trying to compete with my hands for attention, which is making it difficult to type with the keyboard in my lap.
Y'know, I sometimes prefer the company of a dog to that of a human. A dog has never emptied my bank account, left my car empty of gas, talked about me behind my back, or sabotaged me at work. If you don't believe money can't buy happiness, you've never spent a dollar on a cheeseburger and given it to a dog.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/4/2008 10:32:18 PM | Sylvilagus, I know that feeling well, I have one cat (Lt. Dan, who will unroll the toilet paper if you put it where he can get it...he just shreds it) asleep on my desk curled around my keyboard so it is hard to type, one between my legs (Jo Jo) and Max, the american eskimo behind my chair so I can back up or move without him knowing.
My daughter and her boyfriend saved the kittens, their mom was killed by a dog and they bottle feed them from 3 weeks on...Max helped he licked them clean after they got feed. Now the cats act partly like dogs and want me to carry them when I take him out for a walk...I think the neighbors are thinking Im nuts but it is so funny to watch inside cats outside their little head dont stop moving around. When the moon is full I really love those strolls with Max...it is so beautiful out.
My daughter keeps bring home strays and they stay until we can find them another home. At one point we had 5 dogs and 3 cats. She is thinking of becoming a vet and I think she needs to just get a farm for all the animals she will adopt. Ill add their pictures to my profile...
I highly recommend American Eskimos, they are beautiful, cotton ball on legs...great companion and smart.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/5/2008 10:26:35 AM | There's a reason why the word "dog" and "God" are each other spelled backwards. Dogs give us unconditional love, though we don't deserve it,same way with God's love!
I have 2 Golden Retreivers blond and red...Jake and Gracie, respectively. Both came into my life, thanks to my youngest daughter, who then sailed off to Auburn University!Having them with me most of the time has been a deal breaker for some men in my life....no regrets telling these men "sayonara" whatsoever. They have gotten me through some really bad times and make each day immeasurably better. Can't say that about many people I know, right?!
Time to go walk the pups!

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/5/2008 10:51:56 AM | I don't know if the pets really say that much about US, but how we connect and react to our pets does say alot about us. I dated a fellow who professed to be a dog lover and I respected that---until he was constantly nagging me about MY dog being ill behaved and he put a great big dog in my garage that ate the bicycle seats, parts of my lawn mower, the carpet on the stairs, pulled the stairs away from the door so I FELL into my garage instead of taking the stairs. He also ate part of the wall before I finally said "get this thing the heck out of here." I guess my reaction to HIS dog said that I was a little TOO tolerant!! Probably pointed out what I fool, I was!!
My dog is an overgrown mini-weiner dog. Milo has been part of the family for 7 years. He's the best dog I've ever had. Great watch dog with a huge voice that he reserves ONLY for when people come to the house. He "speaks" quite a bit of English, never runs away, doesn't destroy the furniture and usually stays out of the way. He's very friendly and is good with children--just sort of rolls his eyes at me as if to say, "could you please rescue me from these strange little people who want to dress me up in doll clothes?"

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/5/2008 11:39:40 AM | Sapphire, I raised American Eskimos for years. You're right, they're beautiful dogs. I did find that they could have a cantankerous streak and were extremely territorial (at least, mine were. I suspect it had something to do with my ex, as nobody ever came over to our house, hence, no external socialization for the dogs). My first one, a male, was a jumper. He could steal a piece of toast off a plate held at your shoulder level without disturbing the plate. Tricky one, that. Another one liked to ride in the car, but only on top of the front dashboard. Mine always made very good 'car alarms', too. Anyone who got too close to the car got the full frenzied teeth-bared barking/growling "I'm gonna eat through the glass and get you!" response.
American Eskimos look like the carry the very spirit of Christmas on their faces, the way they 'smile'. I had one that 'adopted' a kitten that was weaned, yet she tried to nurse it and would groom it incessantly. I worried that the kitten would be bald before it got big enough to get away.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 10:06:44 AM | They arent "pets" , but i own 42 snakes, with more on the way ( several pregnant females ) What does that say about me? I'm a herpetologist. I've had snakes all my life. Sort of a hobby gone wild. I've never had a dog. But reptiles and amphibians have always been a major part of my life since childhood. I cant cuddle or play with them, but they keep me busy. It would be awesome to find a woman that shares my passion for my animals. Or just puts up with it! | |

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 11:08:07 AM | I have a Rat Terrier, we (my ex and I ) when were were married and she moved out with one of the pets and I got Mickey and the 2 cats, Tinkerbell, A pure white Himalayan and Bubba an orange Tabby.
I was never a dog person before Mickey-mo. Yes, he is a true companion and he suffers from separation anxiety. He sleeps with me at night. Any prospective women must understand that they will be #1 but he will be #2 and need to accept that.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 11:22:04 AM | My pets actually CAN say something about me.....2 Amazon parrots (squawky, green, piratey kind) w/ 75+ word vocabularies.
In fact I'll get an earful when I go home today...
Since they live for 60+ years, I guess they 'say' that I can stick w/ the decisions I've made.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 2:14:25 PM | i have 3 awesome cowdogs. they are a little quirky and hardheaded and not too fond of strangers, but they have a totally fabulous sense of game and humor. i have absolutely nothing in common with my dogs ;) i also have another little terrier called a mountain feist (a.k.a. redneck rat terrier) and a dingo which, ideally, are on the short list for a new home. they aren't really a good fit on several levels, but they're manageable.
i also have weird chickens of various sorts, plus two giant flightless birds called rheas. the birds are low maintenance and don't require a lot of attention. plus, i have some giant koi out in the pond which are even lower maintenance.
love me, love my cowdogs!

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 2:21:25 PM | I think pet ownership says a lot about a person. It shows me he can love and care for something lesser than and other than himself. If it's a cat, then that's a bonus for me because he can love something he can't control! Shows a gentle, compassionate nature.
To live at home, I'm a cat person. The rest of my life is ruled by dogs! If I ever wind up with a dog of my own, it would be either a Border Collie or a Bichon. I fostered a BC and I am still in love with that dog. I still see him every few months and he has to endure being hugged and mugged to death.
Sometimes I think animals are good judges of character, too. Ever have a pet that just knew better than you did about a SO and you wish you'd listened? I had the greatest cat in the world, Harley Davidson~Hell on Paws, lived to be 16. He was a sort of hang back until he knew you type of guy, then he'd be your best friend, more pesty than a dog. The very first day my ex walked into my house Harley flopped over on his feet for belly rubs. I thought, Hmmm, that's odd, maybe it's a good sign. Well, years later he wound up cheating on me. I have since given up using cat scans as a method of choosing a man!

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 3:00:23 PM | My life would not be the same without my black lab, Mollie. She keeps me in laughter, slobbery kisses, and constantly wants to play. She is loved by many, my friends, my neighbors' children, and anyone with a waterhose! She's great for getting police attention - she rides with her head out the sunroof!
If having her says anything about me, its that I have a big heart, enjoy parks, the lake, beaches and that I take care of my loved ones greatly. She wants for nothing! Literally, she has more toys and daily treats than most children get.
Hopefully, the people who come into my life, will accept her and love her as I do.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 3:10:37 PM | I adopted my calico cat Bella when she was 6 months old. She had lived with a family for 5 months, and they left her at an animal shelter where I adopted her a month later. She is feisty, stubborn, loves attention and affection, is vocal and loves to snuggle with humans if she loves them (she sounds a lot like me) She will be 2 years old tomorrow. I cannot imagine my life without her, she is quite a character with "Catitude", and I enjoy living with her. | |

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/6/2008 10:28:29 PM | The dog says "Woof!". The cat hisses a lot, but that's mostly when the dog says "Woof!", so I don't think it's directed at me, personally. The turtle ... well, it's hard to tell with him. He's a little slow.

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/7/2008 12:03:44 AM | | Sylvilagus, mine is just over a year old and i read it takes two years for them to become full grown. I swear that dog is so intelligent, the things he does totally amazes me. He is so friendly, my daughter taught him to hug and he cuddles. But he is very territorial with me...if someone (male) comes over and gets near me he will try to get between us..sorta funny to watch especially if im not that into the guy (MY BAD!). He plays fetch but when he brings the item back he will be one inch outside of your reach and you can just tell he is laughing at you...but you are right...its the smile that does you in. | |

| People, of our age, alone...what do our pets say about us? Posted: 10/7/2008 2:13:17 AM | I just got home from a 6 day trip and my cat is saying "well it's ABOUT TIME you got home, i was going nuts here alone". My dog settled down for a nap on the porch after saying "whew, you finally got us home.. that was a great vacation but there's nothing like my spot on the porch". | |
