I like it when guys post photos of themselves with their pets. It says they have compassion for other creatures, and can handle responsiblity and committment to something other than themselves.

Agree! On another site, there was a profile with a very handsome guy with his shirt off, great body. Another photo on his profile showed him, fully clothed, walking along the beach with his black lab....which picture turned me on more? I love black labs...it was the picture with the dog...showed he had 'compassion' for and interest in other creatures, responsibility and committment to them, love of them. Yep.

I think pets say many things about us, though I don't think it's the breed but the individual personality of the pet that says more. I've had two****r Spaniels, and they were diametric opposites. My first, who lived to be nearly 15, was a scrapper, rather picky about who he liked, and fiercely protective (actually, he was a temperamental old crock, LOL). My second, Nicky, has always been a gentle, happy soul who loves everybody.

Pets provide us with unconditional love and acceptance; they do not judge us based on how we look, or decide to leave if we do or say something tactless, stupid, or of an opposing view. That is the ultimate gift -- we can be ourselves, good or bad, and they still recognize the love in our hearts and respond to it. When they are younger, they teach us to view each day as a new adventure, with new friends to make, and new things to see right around the corner, which we haven't noticed before. They remind us to "play after every storm." When they age, they teach us acceptance and patience, and the ways to age gracefully. When we are in pain, they sense it and comfort/nurture us with cuddles and sloppy kisses, or they distract us and make us laugh with their antics. They help us reduce our stress and keep our lives in the moment. They give us someone to love, spoil, nurture and brag about to our friends ("my dog is SO smart, he....."). They give us a great deal more than our investment of time, and they stay for the long haul -- both of my dogs have stuck around with/for me far longer than any man I've known, which is why my slogan has grown into "love me, love my pets."

I have a 1-1/2 year old Collie [male]
With enough energy to light-up our whole Town....
[After I assemble his Oversized Hamster Wheel..!!]
I've been leash-training him for the last year, and he's much better about minding commands...
But send a Squirrel across his path .. and it's *Get-'im!~Get-'im!!~Get-'im!!!*
It's _Amazing_ how much Power a 60 lb. dog can unleash in a Split-second..!!!
...Much like Me..!!
I can go from Couch-Potato .. to an All-Out Frenzy in a Srtreet Hockey game..., just as quickly...!!!

Hi all,

I have a cat who is 12 years old. Short-haired grey tabby. Maybe someday I'll post a picture of him.

People say he is pretty when they meet him. I think he says that I am a woman who takes very good care of others, and that I love animals.

An Ex brought him home one day, from a friend's house.

I have enjoyed reading this thread and about people and thier animals. Right now, the Animal Planet channel is having a show about all the different breeds of dogs. It is called: "Dogs 101". And, Victoria Sewell has left Britain and come to America to help pet owners with their dogs. (Train). I love good TV.

What does it say about us that we rely on pets for companionship?

Er... um... that we're loving people who are capable of appreciating the unconditional love we receive from our pets? I don't "rely on my pet for companionship" because he doesn't put his arms around me at night, hold my hand while we walk or share his dreams with me. They won't accept his pawprint at the bank and we never have fights about who gets to drive. I literally HAVE TO pick all of our meals by myself but I don't mind because he's never once told me my ass looks too fat in my jeans... But if ever I just wanted someone to be happy to see me every night, I've found him in the form of a little white cloud with soft brown eyes. (I have a Maltese which takes me to your next question.)

And, does the type or breed of your pet say something about your personality?

In my time, I've had everything from a Yorkie to an Akita... I mean a TINY Yorkie and a BIG Akita... As much as I loved each of them for their wonderful personalities and characteristics, I have to say that my maltese is really quite the guy so I hope he reflects some of my personality. He is hugely playful and affectionated. So am I. He will sit for hours listening and trying to understand what I'm saying. So will I... try to understand what someone else is saying, that is... These dogs are known as "little healers" or "miracle dogs" and I would like to think I have that effect on those who know me... And he has a wild mop of hair with soft brown eyes... So yes, he is me, on a bad hair day...

I just wish God had given our furbabies a lot longer lifetimes...

Well I agree that a man with his pet in the picture makes me think that maybe he is a good person but as we all know not always true. I personally would rather see a picture with his animal then with his shirt off. Having 4 dogs of my own I would appreciate a man that could accept that they are my responsibilty and I am tired of men telling me I will always be alone seeing that I have 4 dogs. If only they would realize that if they were treated half as well as my dogs they would be in 7th heaven.
Stupid men ..... NO wonder I appreciate my dogs.

I've had cats and dogs most of my life. I like them both. Maybe I'll post a pic of me and my first kitty ...when I decide to post a pic again....

I always say your pet picks up some of the more subtle nuisances you may have and may or may not be aware of.

I have one friend whose oldest cat recently died. She soon bought a new kitten. She was so happy to be rid of the older one. He was very needy and meowed really really loudly. When I'd visit...he'd come up and meow loudly to me. I 'd pet him and talk to him and he'd stop meowing. Meantime she was yelling at him for being a pain. Her new kitty is just as loud as the old one!

My calico...now, I'm really studying her...cause I want to know what she's picked up from me. She waits for me at the door when I come home from work. She doesn't get under my feet. She looks up at me and starts doing this little trilling noise. I trill back. She waits for me to put my stuff down, then comes up knowing she'll be petted and stroked. I ask her how her day has been and she just does that "trilling" sound and sticks her whiskers straight out and smiles.

Now...if I'm on the "pooter" to long...she bites me!...not hard...its with love.

I have three cats, two dogs and have had pets almost all of my life. It's been very rare for me to be involved with men who DON'T have pets and they must at least LIKE animals.

I have no problem, going away for a weekend, as my best friend comes over, feeds and waters everyone. For a longer period, I can get a niece to house/petsit.

"My calico...now, I'm really studying her...cause I want to know what she's picked up from me."

Watch those tri-colors - they're smarter and more vocal than the average cat. My tortie, Miss Rowdy Bratcat, loves men and immediately jumps onto their laps and snuggles. Once, when I got to the guy's lap first, she sat on the arm of the couch and cussed me out. Gotta love the little witch, though.

I have two female pugs and they rule the roost. They shed like crazy and I could vacuum 24/7 and there would still be brindle hair all over, but I don't care. Their companionship and love have taught me that some faults are worth putting up with. They look to me for care and sustenance, I don't get upset if they have accidents or if they demand attention while I am busy. They have taught me to mellow out in my old age. I can not imagine a happy life without a pair of dogs.

I am owned by a calico and she is a character- vocal, smart, stubborn, always wanting me to rub her belly or pet her, and her meows and vocalizations are very interesting. She makes trills and chortles when she is happy, and definitely can chew me out when she is irked at me about something. She will not let me pick her up and she will not sit in my lap, but has to sleep with me, and when I am home all day wants attention of some kind all the time. She likes men and is quite a flirt, but when I play with the next door neighbors dogs she gets jealous and left me a present in the middle of the bed once when she realized that I had been playing with them (smell). I cannot imagine my life without the Bella.

I like to think I own my cat, but she knows the truth!!

She is a wonderful little runt of a tortoiseshell kitty...the most beautiful one that I have ever "owned," as well as the smartest!! She is the first one I've had who doesn't like being picked up or patted unless she comes to me. She even knows how to play fetch, and how to turn on the bathroom tap for a drink!!

I don't think that I rely on her for companionship, as I have lots of friends, a job that I love. It is nice to come home to the little critter though.

My good buddy is Jack dog.........he helps keep me healthy......active.......and gives great hugs.

He's no burden at all......and does not tie me down. He loves to travel.....stay in hotels.....ride with the top down.....does not bark or chew anything other than his rawhide bone......can stay inside alone for up to 12 hours......is kid proof.......and loves people.

When it's just him and I.....he rides in the front seat.

With a lady......if he's welcome......he rides in the backseat.

I had a dog and the best 9 yrs with her but i had to put her down, broke my heart but mostly, i didnt like coming home to an empty house. i like to be greeted at the door after a hard day of work with unconditional love...knowing someone loved me. i gave it sometime before deciding if i wanted another dog, well, i broke down and got one, just couldnt resist. sure it takes patience and time to train them and time i have, so why not put it to good use. if someone comes into my life, he will love my dog too. everyone is equal in my house.

Having a pet that you do care for says that you have the ability to love something. If the pet is not well cared for it says you are neglectful, and/or abusive. The type/breed of pet says a lot, too. People with pit bulls/rotweillers/dobermans are often either violent, abusive, types, or gentle souls who are afraid of such types. They have the dog for: fighting other dogs, or intimidating neighbors, or for protection against muggers/abusers/burglars. People with big dogs-English Sheep Dogs, Mastiffs, etc, often like to cuddle, and so have a dog they can hold, and lay against, and cuddle. People with 'showy' dogs-expertly groomed, show cut, poodles/etc-are often pretentious show offs in other regards as well...into conspicuous consumption, and bragging, and gossip. People with 'work dogs'-sheep/cattle ranchers with sheep/cattle dogs, etc-tend to be practical people with common sense. People with inappropriate pets-small apartment dwellers who own a Great Dane/etc-are flighty, non-sensical, 'act first, and think later' types. Those with untrained, or poorly trained, dogs make poor parents/companions/partners as well. They are: lazy, irresponsible, types who fail to do other things they should, too...such as pay bills, give timely notices to landlords, pay taxes, etc. People who have odd pets-big pink C***katoos, tarantulas, etc-are individuals rather than crowd followers. People who own wild, or wild-domestic mix-pets...wolves, wolf-dog hybrids, cougars, etc, tend to have a dark, violent, wild, side themselves. They also have little regard for other people, or the law, and they tend to neglect/abuse their pet. People who have cats are often cat-like...independent, comfort seeking, etc. They are also often unable to form loyalties/bonds. Some dog owners can be dog like in their loyalty, devotion, etc. We tend to choose pets which are somehow either similar to us the way we are, or similar to us the way we want to become. Pets say a lot about their owners.

mizbex.... you and I share the same motto... I can not imagine my life w/o a dog in it.... I like cows and horses too, and like to live where I can view them, but a dog is a must!

As far as what they say about your personality, I think if you choose the dog it can give some insight, but so often dogs choose us.

I've chosen to own mainly large breed dogs of the working class, with the exception of a Miniature Schnauzer.

Doberman- my favorites
American bull
Giant Schnauzer
English Shepard
Miniature Schnauzer

All have been great dogs!

I think it says we are caring responsible people. I have 4 dogs, I show Standard Schnauzers(not a breeder) The oldest is 13 yrs ,8,6 & 16 mo. This was a great hobby of mine but since I have recently "retired" from it so to speak, I would not get rid of the dogs for a potential relationship. This is their home.
If I dated a man with children I would accept that. The only way I get to be "grandma" is to have a relationship with someone that has children/grandchildren; dont have any of my own. I hope someone would at least tolerate & be kind to my dogs when around them. They are crated when friends & family come over & at nite, they have a sitter come in the middle of the day so if I need to do errands after work or am late they have been out during the day. When I am home alone with them they get care & attention.. love to walk & play ball.
I do not force them on anyone & they can be quite exuberant when someone first comes in but settle down in about 5-10 min. I dont have children so this is something for me to nuture, but they are not spoiled brats. They are however extremely smart!
I would kennel them if my partner & I were going away & probably my sitter could let them out if we were out for the evening. So I am willing to compromise so I am able to date. It really isnt very hard

being a dog person, i tend to form opinions about people based on the type of dog that they have. speaking in broad generalities, people with little foo-foo dogs are as shrill and annoying and high maintenance as their dogs. people with beagles mystify me. people with hunting dogs bore me. people who put their dogs on chains piss me off. i have australian cattle dogs. i believe i would get along swimmingly with anybody that had an australian cattle dog. they are unique, and not to be appreciated by the masses.

i also have a dingo and a mountain feist. my chickens are exotic & strange breeds, and i have two rheas. other than that, i have koi. i like unusual, quirky things. damn i guess that makes me unusual and quirky!

I think having a pet is an indication that a person is responsible & loving. I agree that pets do require an investment of time but I think most pet owners get much more back in return from their pets. I have had dogs as pets my whole life. In the past 2 dogs I had were border collies (both lived very long & happy lives) & currently I have a keeshound/husky mix named Princess.

It’s so very true that pets can provide you with unconditional love. I know mine does. It doesn’t seem to matter if I’ve been gone for a couple hours or nine hours … she’s always there waiting at the door for me with her tail wagging. When I’m feeling down she always seems to sense it and tries to lift my spirits with a warm nuzzle or a lively game of toss.

In regards to the breed saying something about my personality … well, all of the dogs I have had are known to be great companion dogs so maybe it’s true. All I know is Princess has been my best friend for the past 4 yrs since my divorce & I hope it’s a friendship that lasts for a very long time.

Oh … and I’ve never felt that my pet has hampered my ability to meet others, in fact I’ve met several terrific ladies while we were out walking.
