lets face it without my other dog....god rest her soul, i couldnt of gotten thru alot of hard times....she was there for me no matter what. i took time out for bit to grieve for my dog, and now i got another puppy....i couldnt resist. my pets allow me to be myself , me, me, me. i dont have to worry if shes going to judge me for who i am....shes accepting, nor do i have to own up to her expectations, only to love her and care for her.

shes spunky, outgoing, loving and shes always waggging her tail to greet me at the door when i come home from work ...puts a smile on my face. i know she cant replace the company of a male companionship but i dont have to be anyone but myself round her and that makes me feel good...its reality.

hugs for all pets....

In my opinion:

dog = someoone capable of caring for another life, that appreciates affection and unconditional love.

cat = someone capable of caring for another life, that doesn't need affection unless the one they care for needs something.

bird = someone capable of caring for another life, that likes to keep them in a cage.

rabbits, gerbils and ferrets = someone that wants something furry to play with, that can be kept in a cage when it's convenient and will shit on them and chew the electrical cords when they're taken out.

fish = someone capable of caring for another life, but prefers to watch rather than engage.

LOL ok. Having a dog says you have time to devote to it since dogs need alot of personal time and attention. Having a cat says you are a fairly busy person (me) who doesn't have the time necessary for a dog or any other attention-intensive pet. That's why I have always preferred cats. I like dogs, but having one would not be fair to the dog. I love all animals but want one I can care for properly - physically and emotionally.

Beyond that and basically personal preference (some people dislike certain animals), choice of pet doesn't denote any personality type.

You learn so much from animals about the value of loving touches, tone of voice, body language and subtleties of expression. I have learned animal communication and healing touch. Most people can do this too if they open up.

Over the last decade I fostered about 300 dogs for rescue, mainly Golden Retrievers,****r Spaniels and Shelties plus a few mixes and unusual breeds. I now have five Shelties and a Pomeranian. We are, in the best sense of the word, a family. Bliss, my oldest Sheltie communicates to me with every hair, every look. Her body language also tells me what's happening around us. She likes almost everyone but if she doesn't like someone they must be seriously disturbed.

What pets say about us is that we are loving and sensual people. Good pet lovers are the BEST lovers because they are careful to speak lovingly, to touch as a caress and to remember to come home in time for dinner.

Now then....for those pet lovers out here...no doubt many of you have your pet(s) sleep in bed with you, right? So, when it comes time for intimacy with your significant other/partner, at what point do you dismiss the pet from the bed? Surely you do....dismiss the pet? Does the pet go quietly or is it a big production? And, then, at what point do you say, 'ok that's over, let's have little poochie back up here with us"...you can probably tell that this was a big problem in a former life...so how do you handle it?

Nope, Patches Kitty doesn't sleep with me. She craves her own space as an only kitty (and so do I!)

One thing I have noticed, though...and I don't think I'm imagining things. Patches is a pretty independent cat most of the time, but she seems to sense when I'm upset or having a bad day. When that happens, she turns into Laptop Kitty like you wouldn't believe. She leaps into my lap, does that "kneading bonding" that kittens do, and won't budge! Trust me, that is a great comfort!

Now, that behavior "almost" makes up for the days when she is howling like a banshee, attempting to open screen doors, and wailing "Noooo! Noooo!" at the prospect of new and different kitty food...!

(Yes, I am a cat nut. At least I admit it, though!)

Good god between he insanely neurotic parrot, the antisocial and politically incorrect cats (mother and son), the Yorkshire Terrorist with the suspicious birthmark (you figure it out, think Omen) and the Chihuahua who has been dubbed Sir Farts A lot for reasons I'm sure ya'll can discern, I'm not sure what they are saying... it'll be interesting when that first date actually makes it to my house for a night in... that's just frightening on way too many levels...

I have napped or slept with the dogs on occasion; but do not do so now & did not do so when I had a partner. The dogs are crated at bedtime... and dinnertime whether I have company or not

I have both cats and a dog.. the dog is a new addition this month.. 6 yr old mastiff that thinks she is a lap dog and has already bonded to me (and me to her). Since I love animals any man in my life will need to enjoy their company too.

I am going to be adopting a 10 week old tuxedo cat next week. My other cat, the 2 year old Calico named Bella is probably going to let her jealousy show, we shall see what happens.

Oh, I know! Aren't they great? I know that other animals have their unique personalities, but I really get a kick out of cats' weird little "quirks" in particular. So glad to know there are other "cat nuts" on here.

Patches pulled a good one tonight (Halloween). Normally she hates all other kitties and most people, so when the little trick or treaters came to my house, she crouched in the bushes and gave them her MOST evil devil stare. Very intimidating (ho ho ho)!

Fifi, you must keep us updated on how things go with Bella after you adopt the tuxedo kitty. Hope the jealousy isn't too bad!

I have far too many pets. Acquired during a time when the negativity around me was almost deafening, and they provided a barrier against the world with their innocence. I have a horse, a cow (raised her on a bottle, she thinks she's a dog), a field full of pet goats, a house rabbit that now has her own house and yard, four dogs (left over from the years of exhibition, now "just" pets), a cat and several birds. And gerbils. And fish. And....whatever is next in line. "It followed me home, can I keep it?"

Not sure what all that says about me...but I'm never "alone."

Sapph

This post touches my heart. I can relate so much. I, too, have the virtual pet circus. I've got several "porch" cats, three dogs, and two wild aquatic turtles in a large pond I had built on my property. I adore my animals and my little girl loves them as well. I'm a single mother but our pets are our primary family. We never feel alone with all of our beloved animals about. There is always an animal around to snuggle and keep us company. It's a happy life.

I've had animals most of my life, from childhood when my family always had one or more dogs and cats. My having a pet has nothing to do with age. I am not allergic to them and love them as part of the family. If I met someone who didn't like animals, I don't think I'd like him. Animals, all animals (my favorites are elephants), are actually a big part of what I see as wonderful about life on earth, so someone who doesn't like animals is probably not someone with whom I'd be compatible. Meeting someone who is allergic to dogs and cats is something that would be a big issue for me. I can't really imagine my old age without a dog to take on long walks and hikes or a cat to cuddle on my lap in the evenings or those summer mornings rocking in my chair on the terrace/veranda/porch (as the case may be).

I live with a laid-back dog, a semi laid-back cat and a laid-back kid. I think their happy, easygoing natures say a lot about me! And yes they all want to get into my bed...and sometimes they can...

Except for those times I was involved in a serious relationship, my black lab slept with me for 12 years. I think it's funny someone earlier on in this tread suggesting we begin to look like our pets: I can't see me, a 5'3" blonde caucasion resembling a fully grown black labrador. Nope. Maybe if it was a yellow lab?

I LOVE MY DOGS! I have a pesky beagle named barney, and a loving 95 pound pit bull named Big Pete. Pete looks so fierce that people are simply amazed when they meet him and enjoy his adoring personality. Many times friends bring their friends over to meet Petey he is such a charmer. Before I bought Pete I researched the breed and created standards in which to raise him by. I have never allowed anyone to rough wrestle with him. He is fully aware that teeth NEVER touch skin. He is never hit or hurt by anyone. He knows nothing but love in his life. My beagle Barney has the cutest personality and is so enjoyable. Barney is 34 pounds and he is actually the boss here. Pete brings me a great sense of security. He is loving, but he is on guard and protects his territory. Barney will actually bring me the remote control for the TV..LOL I am blessed to have such sweet pets to love and be loved by. Although I have heard that rescue animals seem to appreciate their owners more due to their former situation. Every now and then I threaten to take Pete and Barney to the shelter for two weeks to enable them to see just how wonderful they have it..LOL

My five Shelties and tiny special needs Pomeranian are all living in the lap of luxury. I bought five acres for them and moved us eight hours drive from the big city so they'd have more of a life.

I've used that threat on mine too when they are being too demanding.

They've met my rescue dogs and know it ain't all roses out there! A couple of months ago Bliss, my OIC Sheltie, dug under the fence and let her pals out. I heard wild barking, looked out the window to see them all lined up directly outside the fence, so bewildered. Opened the front door and here they came running into the house: little Velvet, polite Cameo, wild Miss Scarlett, Mr. Mala and Madame Bliss. "Mother, mother! Bliss let us out! Did you see us outside? That was soooo scary. Is lunch ready?" What silly things they are!

What do our pets say about us? That we love, love, LOVE!

I never relied on a pet for companionship, instead enjoyed what i had. Shared space with a ferret for 8 years and had so much fun (playful creatures)...hmmm maybe we are like our pets!!!

Never felt it was a "need to be there" but more like, hey I made this choice and will follow through.
