Funny, Miss Moriama...my Snort waits until I'm on the phone, to decide he needs a walk...RIGHT NOW! Talk about Pavlov's response..the phone rings, I say hello, he says "I GOTTA GO!" He's got me trained pretty good.

I don't have a pet.

I guess it says I have room for yours.

Ewww! I live in a No Slither Zone

I mean it's not like your python will bring you your slippers...and they really suck at catching Frisbees. And cuddling up on the couch with a 100 pound constrictor seems like a pretty high-risk way to seek affection.

Anything big enough to kill and eat my 90 pound Chow mix...and furthermore ENJOYS doing it!...will not be slithering across my threshold!

Well, I run a half way house for cats and dogs some of the time so my house is pretty wild at times. I have three permanent residents, well actually six if you count the kids.. Two dogs, schnauzer and a westie schnauzer cross and a cat who thinks its a dog. Seriously..
I used to have another cat but ..

I took my dogs for a walk in the park behind my house last summer.. As I started out, I realized my gray cat was following us, then realized the orange and white one was following us too. We walked the entire park and near the end, an older couple who were enjoying their coffee on the deck called to me and said "Are you Dr. Doolittle??? Because we have never seen such a parade..

I think my pets have me well trained.. they know where the treats are, the leashes are, they have their own beds but sleep on mine..

I had two cats (they both passed away last year at the ages of 14) and nothing slithered past them without getting killed. One of them used to actually stand up on her haunches and box the guy and hit him with her paws if she didn't like him.

But I think what my pets said about me was that I was a person who accepted them and people as they are. One of my cats was the ugliest cat in the world and yet she was a sweetie. The other one was gorgeous and miserable...........But I loved both of them for all 14 years just as they were.........

I can honestly say I have never dated or married a man with cats. I definitely am a dog person and don't even consider men who are not dog people. (outdoor cats/barn cats are ok though...they keep the snakes away on the ranch). Cat people are different than dog people.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^.............................

I kind of avoided this thread.. as.. I have no pets.

What does that say about me?

Hopefully.. that I have deep respect animals.

I also respect the owners of pets. I guess.. I feel as some people do.. that never really want/wanted to have children of their own. I just don't have the time to spend on caring for them. They need a lot of care.. shots.. vet visits.. and mostly.. lots of time spent with and on them. I just had my youngest son turn 21. I feel that my responsibilities have finally been fulfilled. I don't feel the need for anymore added responsibilities just yet. Maybe.. in time.. I'll want to "care" for a pet. Until then.. I feel it's better that I don't put forth only "half" an effort.. and end up hurting some poor defenseless animal out my newly-found selfishness.

I have reptiles. What it says about me is not important However, I will tell you what it says about me, anyway. It means I like reptiles! Nothing more...nothing less. But at least these snakes are easy to recognize!

Pets are like people. Yeah, pets tie us down, but they stay when people go, because they're dependant on us for their very survival, so there's a longevity thing about pets. Pets say A LOT about us, because we look for a pet that suits our personality. An aggressive person will most likely own an equally aggressive pet, a bulldog, a doberman, a rotweiller, something equally ferocious. A loving person will most likely own an equally loving pet, a Collie or some whimpery feeble little thing.

I need a reasonably self-sufficient mellow meatball to curl up with me at night. I'm thinking a big, fat cat. I'm not the hyper type. An animal that requires constant attention and freaks out/poops all over the house when I'm gone is not for me.

I think Pets can say a whole lot. The type of pets you have. How many? Perhaps the way that you interact with them might say the most. Personally, I find it somewhat surprising at the number of single matures who have collected a lot of pets. My impression is that women are more inclined to do this than men.

Women who have little dogs in their main profile pics are allready on the 'endangered' list for me. ha! I have probably seen enough allready. Women who have personal zoos are also on my personal red flag list. Probably not interested in taking that on. women who include in their profile things like: ( If ya don't like my animals... then git out) will probably not get any response from me. I'm grateful they have furnished me with such useful information. ha ha!

Hey, if ya like animals, and want that kind of surrogate family.... its a free country. But realize..... its something that more than likely, in reality.... decreases your allready small odds at finding a partner. Just my simple opinion. I know not everyone will agree with it. thats just fine. But, the ridiculous Pet supply industry in this culture Loves ya.

I'm gittin' off track: I don't necessarily agree that people who have this apparantly deep love for pets will automatically be able to transfer that to partners. Makes me more nervous than optomistic. You know, the surrogate thing. This is an area that I am a little suspect. Maybe I'm all wrong, but I don't think so. People who have pets that I don't like. Well, I'm not goin' there! ha! In my book, pets should be complimentary to our primary people relationships. If it gets outta whack. somethin's outta whack.

I think a lot of us got all confused growing up with all those walt disney talking animal movies and cartoons! har! We are the generation that grew up and came of age with this stuff.

a well cared for animal says volumes about us.If my animals of whatever type dont take to a person I listen to what they say.
And the behavior of the other around my animals also speaks to me.

Dont have one but I love pits. ( I think it is the state dog of NM)
I have all kinds of livestock guardian dogs, a corgi and a rott/swiss mtn dog mix. All rescues. Not the only rescues I have had.I would love a cat but this is too country here and I dont want it to have to stay inside all the time. Parrots. and alpacas.

Understanding parrots and alpacas will help me understand the aliens if the meet up with me in my lifetime

what do our pets say about us?

Tonight I will try to pretend to be asleep.. while also trying to listen in on any "she's asleep now, we can talk" conversation my dog and cat may be having about me.

If it works, I'll let ya know.

I have always had a cat, but I had to have my cat put to sleep this past year and had decided not to get another. Instead, I now have two frogs that live in a small acquarium and reside in the bathroom (a conversational piece for sure) and a beta fish that lives in a crystal bowl in the living room. Kind of fits my environment as I live on the ocean..........

Great observation. It always concerns me when I see the extremes. Like women as an example who have small dogs that they dress up and treat as a baby, and those who have animals but neglect them. In the human world these are the worst type of parents. My belief about animals is this. When I chose to have my cat and chickens, and in the past horses or other beasts, I was assuming the full responsibility to take care of them, and not neglect their needs be it food, shelter, vet care.

It's wonderful working with animals that visit hospitals. And animals have such positive health benefits from lowering blood pressure, healing from sexual or emotional abuse, to autistic children. And show me a man who loves his dog and I will show you a good man.

ZenBeth...gotta agree 100%. But I'll throw this in, too. I don't trust people who don't like animals. I fought for years to get animals allowed in the mobile home park I lived in. It was for over 55, but although I was younger, I was allowed to live there, because my wife met the requirements. I only added that last part, because I know the lynch mob is watching every little word I say. Hoping to catch me in a lie.

Anyway...I fought for years to allow residents to have pets as they were great company for single elderly people. I submitted all sorts of reports on the effect on morale and longer life. Presently, not only are animals allowed, but they have raised the limit from the initial one pet to two pets. Pets are great therapy in many cases. Great post, ZenBeth

[An aggressive person will most likely own an equally aggressive pet, a bulldog, a doberman, a rotweiller]

comments like this encourage banned breeds & breed legislation. Have owned a dobe & known quite a few- big babies really. Rotties are not for everyone b/c of what they were bred for- to guard & believe it or not.. herd sheep & cattle. They & other dominant breeds need an owner that knows what they are doing. Bull breeds were bred to fight but a lot of that has been bred out of them by RESPONSIBLE people.
When I got rid of my english****r- who tried twice to REALLY hurt me- who do you think got btwn us... the Dobe.
was never afraid of dogs or specific dog breeds til then. Attended shows & was exposed to a lot of breeds. After the EC incident, what did I gravitate to to get over my fear?? The Amstaff (what folks mistake for a pit bull- there is a difference). Very nice dogs & it really helped. Went back to the working breeds where I knew what to expect (standard schnauzer) as far as temperment, activity & personality- no regrets
