| Christianity v. Alchoholism: Which is worse? Posted: 7/8/2009 7:22:35 AM | Since this is an open forum where everbody brings their argument forward I would like to say firstly thank you for the opportunity to say my 2 cents worth. The question is Christianity v. Alcoholism Which is worse ? It amuses me how these PoF discusions degenerate into slanging matches between some parties involved in the debate . The OP in this thread is determined in this instance to continually slang off Christianity being of the belief that Athism is some how supieriour. The non consistancy is the word religion keeps popping up , is not Athism a religion ? If I got up every morning drank a glass of water and farted , doing this religiously everyday would this not be my religion. Religion to me is nothing more than organised crime and to be Morman like or Catholic like . Christianity is on the other hand to try and be Christ like . For many years people had to go through the church to have a spiritual connection but today many Christian believers get their connection by a number of other ways. Back to the main question C v A . Of all the people I know 2/3 drink , of those 2/3 can have a drink and behave , the other 1/3 once they start drinking it turns into a competition and they will drink till they are knocked out , locked out or pass out. A third of murder victims are drunk and so are two out of three violent offenders , 60% of domestic violence calls to police 40% of drownings and victims of deaths from fire , a quarter of pedestrians killed are alcohol related . If you left your car at home and are staggering home half cut the chances of mugging increases as you are seen as an easy mark . The man who grows the barley , drives the truck to deliver it to the brewery , The brewery workers , the bottle shop attendant , bar tender , cab driver , policeman all draw a wage and pay a tax . Alcohol is a big business . If you walk home drunk and become a victim of crime you are going to need councilling the list goes on. I believe we humans have two sides , our physical presence and our spirtual presence (mental presence if the word spiritual upsets you) Body and mind . A person who is an athelete will build up physical muscle , a spiritual person will build up spiritual muscle . It is not my intention here to say Athism is wrong or Morman or Catholic , the point I'm trying to make is Christianity although concieved to be worse than Alcoholism is not. Don't believe ? cool but respect others right to .
We have two things in this life , material possessions and personal knowledge , personnal knowledge is aquired by an effort on behalf of the person who did seek that knowledge and you can be imprisonned for you beliefs in some countries but unless you develop alziemers or have a frontal labotamy no one can take it off you . I have met alcoholics who repeat themselves and clearly drink themselves into a stupor , seems sad to me but I respect their right to do it. | |

| Christianity v. Alchoholism: Which is worse? Posted: 7/8/2009 10:11:33 AM | | After rereading my previous post I would like to say I feel the words organised crime in the same sentence as Morman and Catholic could be offensive to members of these organisations so I do apologise . There are a lot of good Catholic people out there and Morman people also. I do not personnally get into Buddhism , Hindu , Muslem etc. but accept their right to believe in whatever gets them through life. I do feel most of the Christian based religions are doctrinated to a degree that is confusing to the uninformed . Charismatic or non charismatic . I accepted Jesus as my personnal saviour and my faith is like a cloak that protects me . I have had things revealed to me in dreams . Being a Christian is the hardest thing I have ever done and if people think I'm a sissy or weak so be it . If anyone has sinned they have sinned against God . It is not my place to judge and therefore non of my business. | |

| Christianity v. Alchoholism: Which is worse? Posted: 7/8/2009 1:20:03 PM | | First, you have to believe that Christianity is a method of delusion. That is debatable. What is not debatable is the fact that many people have been delivered from alcoholism and a lot of other maladies as a result of becoming Christians. or submitting their lives to the God of the Christians So,I would definitely have to say that Christianity beats alcoholism any day of the week. :-) | |

| Christianity v. Alchoholism: Which is worse? Posted: 7/10/2009 7:28:17 AM | RE Msg: 1 by Pyke:
Alchoholism can be defined as (and is defined by my University as): A primary chronic disease influenced by genetic predisposition, psychosocial, environmental and cultural factors. The alcoholic who chooses to drink does so because of a complex interaction between these factors.
Now, christianity is defined as: A monotheistic system of beliefs and practices based on the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus as embodied in the New Testament and emphasizing the role of Jesus as savior
And Religion is defined as: Religion—sometimes used interchangeably with faith or belief system—is commonly defined as belief concerning the supernatural, sacred, or divine, and the moral codes, practices and institutions associated with such belief. In its broadest sense some have defined it as the sum total of answers given to explain humankind's relationship with the universe. In the course of the development of religion, it has taken a huge number of forms in various cultures and individuals. ...
---
So, we since Alchoholism, and Christianity (a monotheistic religion) are both derived from cultural links, among other factors, they can be compared.
Thus, my question to you is which method of delusion do you believe to be worse? And why? It cannot be answered, because it's a trick question. None of those definitions you quoted above, mentions any form of delusion. To answer such a question, is to agree with the premise of the question, that alcoholism is just a delusion and doesn't really exist, and the same for Xianity, and that is not only a damned lie, but an insult to everyone who has ever had to deal with alcoholism and everyone who ever tried to help alcoholics.

When I made the post, I was thinking about it in the sense that I view Alcoholism as a disease upon mankind, something that people need help to deal with.
I (being an atheist) view christianity in much the same light. I believe it hinders social progress and is an impedement as opposed to a sign of social progress. Admittedly my original post wasn't very clear but that's what I meant. Excuse me, but are you a doctor? Are you a psychologist? Were you the doctor who showed to the medical establishment that alcoholism was a disease? When did you submit your medical diagnosis of Xianity to the Canadian Medical Association? Where is your medical proof, your numerous medical studies? Where were you cited in the DSM?
This is what theists call "belief".

I've read the entire fiction novel. Wasn't bad, though the history was a little sketchy You did remember to read it in the original Hebrew, except for those passages in Aramaic, didnt't you? No? So you read the translation into Urdu? Might as well have. Translations are notorious for mistranslating things. The Bible is one of those books where mistranslations are found on every page of the English versions.
Further, as an atheist I don't believe the bible is any more accurate or important to humanity then the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. So you believe that the two are comparable? You obviously are well-informed, and so you know that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a radio series, that was only written as a book much later on. Then it only makes sense that you believe that the Bible started out as a radio series as well. I take it that you think that Jesus did a weekly radio broadcast. What was the comedy programme called, and why haven't we found any archaeological evidence that supports your claim?
Knowledge is power, and it's necessary for the good of humanity for people to speak out against religious fanatacism. Only fanatics speak out against religious fanaticism. Non-fanatics know that fanaticism can occur in any group, religious or not.
I'm beginning to feel like I'm taking candy from a baby.
RE Msg: 52 by Pyke:
The difference between Bin Laden, Hitler, or any other such and myself, is ultimately that I speak against the idea, not the people who hold it. I don't advocate the extermination of the people, I don't believe they are less then human. I don't advocate violence or a lack of thought. I don't hate people because of their creed or race.
There's a significant difference, but I understand that one such as yourself would fail to see the distinction. Read Perfidy. Hitler didn't want to exterminate the Jews. He just wanted them out of Germany. He offered to pass them on to Britain, America, and other countries. They refused to take them. The Final Solution was just because the rest of the world didn't want them either.
Also, if you watch Bin Laden's tapes, then you'll notice he said that his beef is with American ideals that they can just march into any country they want, and take it, under a pretence, not Americans. Bin Laden is against ideals, not the people. He's just like you.
Why are you being so nasty about people you have so much in common with? | |
