I agree with most of the things trailbl4zr said except
I think you should recheck your skills. just the fact you have to use automatix is proof you aren't that good with computers.

Tools are provided to make our life easy and if he decides to use Automatix then more power to him. I have CentOS on my laptop and I don't always compile my own packages. Once in a while I use Yum for packages with a large number of dependencies.

I think linux users like us should stop making statements like that because it only furthers the stereotype that we are elitists and you need to use certain tools or do things a certain way to be a linux user. Linux is about choice. And after all we don't use magnets to write a document, we use a word processor so I guess we should recheck our skills as well.

but linux has so many features its probably impossible to learn them all.

Keeping up to do date with them is quite difficult too...

I was not a Gentoo developer but I knew quite well most of it.

But then I had to move on to other things after I finished my university. I still use Gentoo but I don't spend much time anymore on the Gentoo forums, mailing lists, reading the news, and testing the new stuff.

I am no longer up-to-date with the newest features....

---

And I am not even talking about the software applications here... only dev tools and system maintenance/configuration stuff... There are so many applications that I have not tried all of them and there is no way I will. It is usually my brother that tries stuff... then I see -- hey, that seems good... then I install it on my computer...

This is so true. I am amazed at the number of free applications and softwares available for Linux and that at their quality. Most of them are surpass their Windows equivalents. The first time I used Open Office, I was surprised by it's quality.
In my opinion Linux is soon going to overtake Windows in the Desktop market as well.

Get a mac

While I've used unix since the 70s I don't think either BSD or Linux is ready for prime time. That is I don't think your grandmother could use it out of the box and hit the road running.

There is no question that Windows is far too long in the tooth now to be usable. Between looking for drivers and malware it's a non starter.

If you're technical then you shoulkd try PC-BSD or if you're really brave and need the performance then FreeBSD. If you like messing around with patchinf and dependancies use Linux.

But if you want the dependability and reliability of unix with the friendly drag'n'drop user friendly then OSX is the only realistic choice. You can mke this run on PC hardware but it's not for the uninitated.

Get a mac. Really. For under $500 you can get a dual CPU G4 which will serve you well for years to come.

Any other option involved a certain percentage of hair-pulling.

I've owned, run and programmed all these systems and the mac is by far the clear winner. It's a shame Apple doesn't license OSX as an option to Winbloze.

Keep in mind each camp has its own fanboys and Linux people will tell you their idea is the best and everything else, MS people will too. I have all of these systems and no agenda and I'm telling you the mac is the easiest and safest. They're more expensive to buy new but you don't need to do that. And you do get what you pay for.
