Now given that there are a gazillion native Spanish/Chinese/French speakers around having a language shared by fewer than 9 million people is pretty d*mned useless....but there are benefits ;)

I think Russian is a great language. Love the sound of it. Very mysterious. I even learned how to say, "We must catch Moose & Squirrel."

Some of the Azoreans tend to make up their own vocabluary when they came to this country. Some of my family members tend to say, "Ba-tte-REE-as" if they don't know the exact portuguese verbiage.
I've got a whole list of made up words. Maybe for another thread someday....

English, including several variants (such as American) which are not universally spoken throughout Old Blighty. French, although I seem to have forgotten most of my tenses. A little German, enough Spanish to order a meal and ask for the bill, know enough of the Russian alphabet to find my way around on the Metro and enough of the language to ask where the nearest Metro station is then say thank-you. Oh - and a second vote for Swedish - only a little, but enough to get gasps of astonishment when I try to speak it in Sweden, wher emost people speak incredible English. I think learning another language is a fascinating challenge and, however limited your vocabulary, signals your respect for the people of the nation who's language you have taken the effort to study. I've always found it to be a great icebreaker, even if most of the ensuing conversation is in English.

Hehehe... ok ok... er... besides English, I understand Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien/Taiwanese, Teochew - fluent enough for Will translation or preparation of notarial papers and such... Read very basic French - enough to figure out simple legal documents before sending them or court translation... and understand just enough Japanese to enjoy Anime / Jap Cartoons...
