Smoking, how brainwashed are you?
Posted: 8/28/2008 7:30:02 AM
Hello, since been at home i've started to smoke more,it used to be only 2 a day, i now smoke about 20 a day at a rough guess, and have been thinking about the effects smokeing has on you but if i dont smoke then obviously id eat more. I have also noticed that if i smoke like i do i'm not so hungry either.

So we have a choice eat more and be fat or smoke and eat less. Dont know if any one else experiences this, which ever way we look at it both are bad for you.

Eat excessively and be fat, smoke more and risk, lung & throat cancer plus what ever other causes there are with smokeing.

Me i'd rather live my life and die happy.

In England we have freedom of speech, sapposeidly, but we dont, they have banned drinking in the streets, trying to get every one to quit smokeing but yet wont the government loose out on the taxes they get from pple smokeing? just think if they legalised marijuana(wish they would) just think how much tax they would slapp on it. loads. i'm surprised that they havent yet, least it would create more work in getting ppl of it then. we already have councelling for the smokers who want to quit, if they legallised it they would be trying to get pple off the weed to quit. I love the stuff, legallise it!!!

Smoking is bad, yes. It's good to quit, agreed. Reguarding specifically cancer though (lung or otherwise) it really comes down to mostly genetics. Smoking is a trigger that can set off cancer if you're genetically predisposed to it, but so can breathing in polution when you're walking down the sidewalk. If you're not predisposed, it's very unlikely that you'll get it, even if you're smoking 8 packs a day.

A couple people mentioned why make the anti-smoking fuss if it's overblown and not completely true, who's making money off of that? The answer is big-pharma. Nicoderm, nicorette, chantix, etc all cost more than cigarettes. Even if they didn't, big-pharma doesn't make money off of cigarettes, big-tobacco does, and big-pharma has much more govt influence these days while big-tobacco has lost alot of influence. This goes beyond smoking and lung cancer though, the genetic angle is downplayed throughout the medical industry since they can't charge you to treat a problem if they were to admit that it's not going to help anyways.

It puzzles me as to why they put those nasty pics on the packages...is that to scare me into quitting ?...well why dont they add pics of clogged arteries , fat people and heart disease on the side of a KFC bucket...or how about pics of liver disease and someone throwing up on a bottle of wine ,for someone to look at while they are eating dinner...maybe the same pics on all bottles of beer....anyone have logic behind why they put them pics on cigarette packs and not KFC or other things that are known to be bad for our health ?

regardless of whether its bad for you or not and let alone all the advertisement about it, i can't understand how anyone can love the ciggie smell on their breath and clothes !!!!*barfs*

i WAS a smoker from teens to age 19 when my mom passed from cancer
yes its was directly from smoking and what i saw her go thru is to this day a nightmare for me to think about
i do understand the appeal of smoking and i do understand addiction
how hard it is to quit but still, once i realized how bad i must have once smelled like... whoa, never went back again
fyi; i was out with a bunch of smokers last night and they all went outside to have their ciggie.. a nonsmoker stayed with me, look at me and asked if i smoked
i said
no... (grabbing my boobs) .. i like my lungs healthy
perhaps smokers should brainwash themselves into a loving relationship with their lungs??

I dont think many people are going to argue that smoking is anything but bad for you..Its a stinky ugly habit...I dont smoke around non smokers or in someones house that dont smoke...gotta have respect .
But..why only the pics on the cig packs ?..thats the part I dont understand..not trying to defend smoking at all..just curious why not on other products that cause a host of health problems as well....

If you like wasting tons of cash, getting bent over from taxes, wrinkle your skin, and want to kill your lungs, continue smoking. Don't worry, its inevitable and will happen sometime in your life!!!

I can't wait till I see it go to 10 bucks a pack. I would hope that would increase our smoke-free population.

even if you want to argue that there is no link between smoking and cancer (and I assume, that the Earth is flat, as well..?) you'd have to be stupid to argue that it doesn't have ill health effects..EVERY smoker I know is coughing, hacking, and 'spitting up a lung' many times per day..

even if it were NOT bad for your health,it's stupid, expensive, filthy and disgusting..it smells horrible..

what exactly does it DO 'for' you? does it make you feel better? more alert? "high" ?

every smoker I see furiously puffing away, looks MISERABLE, so it doesn't seem that it makes anyone 'happier', or feel 'better'..?

If you could see yourself objectively (maybe on video?) you would notice how stupid, dumb and UNCOOL you look, like a ROBOT, lifting your hand up mechanically, puffing, exhaling, lowering your hand, then raising it and starting the routine all over again..

BUT..KEEP ON SMOKING!

It only proves that Darwin was RIGHT! :)

If you're reffering to my comment, I didn't say there was no link, just that the link isn't as direct as many people think. The genetic component needs to be there in addition to the smoking. But some other non-cancer problems don't have the same genetic component, like emphysema.

The "brainwashed" people are the smokers, who have been conned by Big Tobacco, in search of BIG MONEY, into being convinced that taking a weed, drying it, adding hundreds of chemicals to make it burn faster, be more addictive, etc., etc., and then rolling it into little paper tubes..lighting them on fire, and inhaling the toxic smoke and fumes produced deep into one's lungs, would be a "GOOD thing"..

smokers "celebrate" being addicted, hooked, living in slavery to a little white paper tube..knwing that a tiny little white paper tube filled with a dried weed and chemicals and a little 'filter' on the end of it, about 3"-4" long and weighing a few grams is MORE POWERFUL than YOU are..

hahah, "celebrate" away, I say!

I think the reason that some guys like girls who smoke is, he thinks, if she would put a toxic tube of weeds/chemicals in her mouth, she'll put ANYTHING in her mouth?

Please OP.
Try feeding your quotes to my Grandmother, Grandfather, Mother and Father who all smoked like their lives depended on it and all died painful, smoking related deathes all before the age of 60.
Oh that's right you can't convince the dead to stop smoking.
Not everyone will die from smoking, but let's face it, it sure as hell doesn't help now does it?

Steve Prefontaine was one of the great distance runners of all time, he never smoked. He went out one day for a run and cacked over from a heart attack !
I smoke AND i eat meat.....but only from cows that smoke !

yes, there ya go, a "statistically significant" sample group of ONE is "good evidence"

..of what, exactly? or "proves"..what?

that "NOT smoking" must be bad for you?

LMAO, likely Steve Prefontaine was born with a bad heart? it happens...maybe he lived longer than he would have, had he been a couch potato/smoker, etc..

Since so many of you are concerned about the health and well being of a few of us...try this on for size before whining about smokers and smoking.

64.5% of americans are overweight or obese.
30.6% of americans are obese
21.6% of americans smoke

I recommend that those of you flapping off about the terrible effects of smoking might want to search out the overweight and obese and tell them how bad McDonalds is, or Applebees, or KFC, or TGI Fridays...or maybe the Chinese take out place down the street.
Tell them that the leading cause of death is heart disease....any idea what the leading cause of heart disease is ? It's not smoking that's for sure.

I also smoke and have no delusions that in general, it IS bad for you.

Does that automatically mean I'll get cancer? Possibly not, but possibly yes. It's not a given that it'll kill me... seems to me that it's hit and miss, but the hits might just have an advantage.

Many things supposedly cause cancer these days.

LOL: yes, let's talk about 'other bad things' to explain why it's 'good to smoke" (very rational?)

hmm, and the number of people who smoke AND Are overweight/obese probably overlapto a large degree..don't care about taking care of themselves.

a difference MIGHT be that you pretty well "have to" EAT to survive (though not as much as many people do)..

NO-ONE "needs to" SMOKE , to live..OR drink alcohol, or use drugs, etc.

First off, yes, eating unhealthy can kill you, but that's not what this topic is about.

Smoking can cause many other health issues. It CAN cause heart disease, especially if your already at risk by being overweight or if your family members have suffered from it. Smoking can also cause skin problems, emphysema, cancer and high blood pressure. Sure, anyone can develop these health problems, but being a smoker just highly increases your chances. So why even take that risk in the first place?

Using data from the 2002 national health interview survey, researchers estimated the proportion of adults in the U.S. who smoke and are obese. The results were stratified for various factors, such as income and education levels.

They found that 23.5 percent of adults were obese and 22.7 percent smoked, a total of 81 million.

About 4.7 percent, 9 million, smoked and were obese. This proportion was particularly high in African Americans and in people with lower income and education levels.

Not much overlap there. I never even intimated that smoking was good. What i said was to direct your concerns about health to a larger section of the U.S. population. I understand that it is not politically correct to come down on fat people like you come down on smokers, nonetheless, they are a greater cost to society (medically speaking) than smokers are.

Being overweight DOES cause joint problems, heart problems, respiratory issues, high blood pressure and much more.

jslade58, I'm not sure why your slinging stats on obesity to everyone? This thread isn't about over eating, it's about smoking... the subject you seem to be avoiding by tossing other heath issues at us.

I still ask the question... why take the risk of smoking when there's a much higher chance of developing health problems or even death, than those who don't smoke. (Oh, and I'm talking about those who dont' smoke and are NOT obese... seeing as you seem to be stuck on the subject).

people will believe what they want to believe, won't they?

If you, as smokers, don't want to accept that you are taking large risks to your health, wellbeing, and longevity by smoking, so be it..

I do not care a whit..

In fact, I heartily recommend that you double your current intake..If you smoke a pack a day now, go for 2.

If you do 2, go for 4..

who know, it MIGHT make you feel BETTER?

I would just prefer that you not do it in the air that I have to breathe..

I definitely accept it.

I also hear, however, that there are likely 100 million other things I'm doing that seem harmless, but are getting tons of press for being as bad as smoking or even worse.

Quitting might save me, but then again... maybe something else I'm doing will kill me.

This may sound defeatist, but maybe red meat will kill me. Or my cell phone. Preservatives. Too much sex (or not enough). Pollution. I think we're doomed (depending which news story you buy into) no matter what.

So survival of the fittest, eh? And if some insist on making themselves unfit... so be it. I feel you.

Your totally right. It seems that everyday there's 10 more items that may cause a health problem or two, however... smoking is KNOWN, I mean there have been studies and studies and it has been proven that all of the crap that is in cigarettes will cause health problems. You may seem healthy now, but I can gaurantee your lungs look like the inside of a chimney and the effects of smoking long term are the most dangersous... not to mention the effect of smoking to those around you.

My point is, you can control what you put in your body. If you know it's harmful, then why do it? Red meat can kill, sure.. then don't eat it. Your cell phone can kill, um, highly unlikely, but even so... don't use one. Eating at fast food joints everyday can kill you, yes... then cook a healthy meal at home.

Smoking can certainly kill you... so stop smoking. And with all of the methods to help a person quit these days, there's no reason why you shouldn't.

El Mariachi: If you are admittedly a smoker in threads over the past year (when you used to post about your Crohns disease or what have you), why does your profile say you are NOT a smoker?

What is the point in that?
