| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 11/20/2006 5:21:32 AM | The last I heard is that FM diagnosis only occurs when all other ailments have been eliminated. Any new developments on diagnosis techniques?
only a rheumatologist can diagnose, and you must have at least 11 of the 18 tender points...I was diagnosed 4 yrs ago...blood tests are also done to eliminate other illnesses...but the only real diagnostic tool is the tender/pressure points. Forget the Elavil and read about 5HTP...it has helped me...
Other things to try: *Hot baths with epsom salts...epsom salts really ease the pain while you're soaking in them. *Heating pads/magic bags *Ice packs/frozen peas *The scent of lavender is soothing if you can add this scent into your bedroom. I have a spray that helps me relax and sleep. *Eat less sugar and carbs...aggravates the pain *Tobacco and alcohol will aggravate and exagerate the pain *Power of the mind...Imagery/positive thoughts *ACCEPTANCE...this one is very tough, you can write to me about this one if you like. *Finding your own balance/pace with activity and rest...I have been working on this one for 4 years now...so good luck to you, it is hard when you wanna go but your body feels like it is 80. *Say goodbye to your old lifestyle, grieve it, and let it pass. *Support and understanding, but this is tough to get when you look healthy... *Lots of days I just sit down and have a cry about it, alone or in the rain...it may get you a little tensed up, but the release is pretty good, then you dust yourself off and get back up! *If you need someone to talk to that has been where you are...please don't hesitate to contact me. *This is probably the best bit of pain relief I can give you, but hard to find...anything with camphor in it...Aboriginies have been using it for pain for over 150 yrs...I have it in some tiger balm lotion and it really works, have also found it in Absorbine Jr pain patches...those are great for longer road trips...just wish they could make me a body suit of the stuff...

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 11/21/2006 5:00:33 PM | | Just heard of a new drug called Lyrica being used for fibro with many good reports.Less side effects than most drugs but very expensive. You're started off at a lower dose and theerapeutic levels range from 200-600mg / day in 2 or 3 doses. For starters,120 tablets of 50 mg costs approx. $165.00 Can.Available in higher strengths once therapeutic levels are reached. If you don't have a drug plan contact the manufacture,Pfizer, and see if they can help.Alot of drug companies will subsidize or pay completely if you agree to be part of their study.Keep up the faith. | |

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 11/21/2006 9:20:24 PM | My pain specialist wants me to try Lyrica, but as you said it is expensive and not covered under my plan, so...he wrote to the Minister of Health on my behalf. I am allergic to most pain meds (opiates), so I get about 20 injections a month (lidocaine), and partake of the herb... If I hear nothing from the Minister, I will contact pfizer, thanks for your post...

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 12/27/2006 11:53:38 PM | Karen - I've known a number of people who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and most of them are either improving, or in a couple of case, virtually symptom-free now. How? Well, not by virtue of white-man medicine, that's for sure.
I suspect that you are probably quite a psychic sponge - by that I mean you are psychically very sensitive and have a tendency to take on other people's stuff. Everyone I have encountered who is diagnosed with this condition seems to have some variant on this dynamic. What I have seen work for many of them is to begin some kind of meditational training that teaches you methods of shielding yourself energetically from unwanted psychic information, as well as helping you to start making a distinction between what is actually yours and what is just stuff you're picking up from the external.
In many 'traditional' or alternative medical models, disease has a wisdom to it - you will manifest illness on the physical if you don't pay attention to what may be going on with your spiritual, mental and emotional bodies. If you can allow yourself to begin to comprehend what any given illness is trying to teach you, the body is quite capable of healing itself. This is the working principle behind many so-called 'miracles' of healing. The only reason people call them miracles is that they lack comprehension of the physics involved in how disease manifests. There are teachings out there that can help you to access this knowledge, if you want it. Then you can attain true wellness, not a stop-gap measure or suppression of symptoms, but true freedom from illness.
It's not for everyone, and this type of work does demand the courage to really face the Self and go pretty deep into possibly painful and suppressed areas, but we only have the one body in this lifetime. I know for me, this type of training has helped to free me from supposedly 'incurable' chronic asthma. It hasn't been easy, but it's worth the effort. If you would like to email me diectly, I have a colleague in the UK not far from Brighton, you may want to look her up.
In the meantime, I hear smoking pot helps a lot :)

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 12/28/2006 12:20:56 AM | I have some nerve damage in my feet. In the forums I use to go to fibromyalgia was mentioned several times and I am sure it has sections on it with people that know about it.
brian.hastypastry.net - BrianTalk Communities
His server crashed and was down for months (back up now) many people went to neurotalk.psychcentral.com NeuroTalk.
I don’t much about that place yet but - if you go to either one and go to the - Peripheral Neuropathy section and just ask - you will get answers and pointed to the right places.
Some of these people know a great deal about various issues.

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 10/8/2009 7:45:21 PM | I hope things are better for you since your diagnosis.
I know that a diagnosis helps because at least you have a name for what it is that has been bothering you. It is nice to be able to focus on trying to deal with something that has a name.
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia by my doctor years ago. I also had chronic fatigue, painful joints, trigger points and other symptoms. There have been some good things posted here already, and I am sure you have tried the traditional things like medications already, so I won't post about them.
After trying various things over the years, I became very sick for a year, and almost by accident tried a special diet. I was doing this diet because I was cooking for someone else who was on it, so I didn't expect it to do anything for me, but to my surprise, within two weeks all my symptoms went away. Its taken me a year to feel completely healed, though, after being sick with Fibro for almost 25 years.
What worked for me was going on the GF/CF diet. It has to be very strict for it to work for me, because the diet means avoiding most processed foods because they almost all have gluten and casein in them as additives in some form. GF means gluten-free, and CF means casein-free. Gluten is in wheat and some other grains, and casein is only in dairy products (not in eggs, though.)
In my opinion, Fibromyalgia is an auto-immune response to something, often triggered by being in an accident, surgery, childbirth, infection, or stress. It causes chronic inflammation and all sorts of other problems. In my case, what I have resembles Celiac.
I really suggest that you try doing an elimination diet to determine if you have an immune response to certain foods. This means eliminating the most common allergens from your diet for a while. There are only about 7 allergens that account for over 90% of all food allergies/sensitivities. You do this for a couple of weeks, and then add back one allergenic food at a time, wait a day or two and see how you are affected by it. It is worth a couple of weeks to try this, and it doesn't cost anything but your time.
I was on several medications at the time I started this, (that weren't really working that well) and was able to get rid of all of them pretty quickly (you do have to taper off of some of them slowly, so check with your doctor before reducing any prescription medications.) I also now can exercise without feeling worse, instead of better. I took up dancing, bike riding and I work out at a gym. All things that would have exhausted me before. I lost 40 pounds without even really trying. A side benefit of this diet is that I also lost all cravings for things (even chocolate!) I am not hungry in between meals, and I don't miss the things with gluten and casein in them. I just have had to learn to cook from scratch more, and I learned what to avoid. I just don't bring it into the house, and that makes it easy.
I used to think I was going to continue to slowly get worse for the rest of my life. I had adapted to it. I thought I just had to accept my fate. I learned lots of tricks for saving energy and still getting things done, but I would pay a big price later if I did too much, or missed any sleep. Missing sleep made me feel like I had the flu!
I just read up on the blood type diet while trying to help someone else with weight loss issues, and I discovered that the diet recommended for my blood type is the same as the GF/CF diet that has helped me so much. So perhaps you could try this diet also. You find out what your blood type is and then follow the recommendations for your type.
I also recommend Epsom Salts baths, Glucosamine, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Melatonin before bed, massage, yoga, meditation, and light exercise. Swimming is good, but don't get chilled. You might try Tai Chi or Chi Gong. Tai Chi works on balance and involves light stretches, and Chi Gong is all about working with your energy. I think going on the anti-Candida diet (no yeast or yeasted products) and Nystatin (or Difulcan) treatment also can help a lot of people.
Before this, I had given up eating food with any artificial additives, (particularly nitrites, which are in preserved/processed meats) and switched to organic foods. I think that giving up high fructose corn syrup was a big part of my loosing weight. I would also avoid anything with aspartame, MSG, and sulfites (in wine and some dried fruits) in it. These things did help, but it was getting rid of the gluten and casein that made such a dramatic difference it seemed like a miracle.
I'm not selling anything, and I don't work for anyone that does any kind of special treatment. I just did this and it worked for me. I hope you get some improvement from something that you have tried, and I sincerely hope that you are already better. If you message me I can help with more about how to do what I did if you are interested in trying it. There are several good resources available on this diet, for instance, there is a good magazine that helps me a lot called "Living Without," and a great blog called "Gluten-Free Girl" and she also has a book out.
I love the way I eat now. I love to cook, and there are a lot more prepared products available now that are GF/CF that weren't around even just a few years ago, so I can make anything I want to eat, and still be okay. I feel great and I look better. Another bonus is that my skin is much better, I have noticed my skin has improved a lot. And the person I was cooking for is much better, too. And that was what it was all about to begin with.
Several family members noticed how much better I was, and without me saying anything to them (as in I didn't give them any advice about this or anything) they decided to try going GF/CF too. My niece has childhood rheumatoid arthritis which went into remission since then, and my sister lost weight (she wasn't really overweight, but lost that difficult 5 lbs she was battling with.)

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 10/8/2009 7:55:26 PM | | I have had it for years following a bad car crash. Did physiotherapy, lots of drugs, and my doctor even tried to get me to quit my job. The thing was, I could never predict when it would get bad. The patterns had nothing to do with how physically hard I worked or anything rational that I could find. And then I discovered that SUGAR aggravates it beyond measure. Meals must contain protein, healthy carbs like veggies, and some good fat. Bread, cereal, pasta and sweets are a big no-no. Exercise is extremely helpful, as is fish oil (Omega 3's.) NOT Omega 6's like flax! Google Dr. Sears Zone for more info. Stress is another big aggravator of symptoms. Basically, live a healthier, more balanced life. Easier said than done, but it does work. | |

"And then I discovered that SUGAR aggravates it... "
I agree, sugar made things worse for me. I remember that the thing that triggered a really bad year of illness for me was when I broke up with my boyfriend and ate a lot of Easter candy. After that, I got very sick, and realized that it was probably the sugar, when I did the same thing at Halloween and had the same problem. (It's really tough when you have kids around to avoid sugar!) I normally don't eat a lot of sugar, but when it is in the house, it is so tempting. I find its best not to have it around. I now give any extra candy to my local food pantry...not that I think they should be eating sugar either...just hate for it to go to waste.
I highly recommend that anyone who isn't feeling well avoid sugar at all costs. I think it aggravates all kinds of problems. There is some research that shows that the body's immune cells are reduced in number for several days after ingestion of sugar. I know one person who used to get sinus infections after eating a lot of sugar, and they stopped after she gave up eating processed sugar completely.
I use Agave nectar now for a sweetener because it has a low glycemic index (doesn't raise your insulin levels quickly.)
You can also use stevia. Stevia comes as a powder, made from a plant and you can even grow it in your garden, and use a leaf or two in your tea. Its really sweet.
If you are trying to loose weight, though, eating a lot of sweet-tasting things a lot might just stimulate your appetite, even if the sweeteners you are using are low in sugar.
If you were on a lot of anti-biotics after your accident, you might want to try taking a variety of pro-biotic supplements, or eating foods that are fermented, like miso, buttermilk, yogurt, tempeh, saurkraut, etc. Look for those that have live, active cultures in them.

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 10/12/2009 9:56:09 AM | Most have low testosterone and IGF levels (male and female). Get these checked. If low testosterone and GH do wonders for those suffering from fibromyalgia.
Diet and exercise (including some weight training) do wonders for everyone as well.
