You are just kidding, right? I have, pinned to my wall, a fairly well-countefeited Chase Money
order for $8,665. I took it to Chase, and had them show me a REAL money order, and they are quite different, if you check the details. This was sent from Toronto, where a bunch of 419's (Nigerian advance letter scammer's) operate, due to legal considerations. Chase does not issue M.O.'s outside the US, first of all, and these guys are hard to trace, but I used greed to draw them out, and turned the scam around on them. The RCMP busted them. I don't know how long they'll be in jail, but they're in there now. And they still think I ripped THEM off! I convinced them that I cashed it. They used up a bunch of names and addresses to evade detection. Nothing they tell you will be true. They will often start the letters with "hello, dear", and it will be apparent that they did not read you profile. OK, let's see what the rest of you potential chumps have on them.

You people are amazing! How the hell did you ever grow to be an adult? Maybe you should listen to more Dylan and Tom Waits. What were you doing while the rest of the world was living?
If you have all that extra cash laying around, and you're dying to be helpful, send it to me, so I can get some teeth, and maybe a real job, a girlfriend, and a life. I only need $10,000, that's chump change to some of you. I won't promise to love you, or anything, except that I'll send you a before and after photo, and I'll be real thankful, and maybe have a little faith in humanity and hope for the future. This is for real; email me if you doubt it.

Well it seems I opened a can of worms to say the least. And your right it would be nice to have a site where all these people could be listed so others won't fall for the same thing. But hey, maybe this is a start.

I saved all my IM messages with the last one. That way I have a record of what he said, and not that it would do any good, but I have it just for the record.

I am very sorry for those who went further than I did. Just remeber there are a lot of great things that come from the internet, but people can be whoever they want to be also and you will never know the difference.

Good luck to you all in finding someone on here who isn't a scam artisit or liar......

I'm sorry that some people see fit to tell you you're idiots when you already know you were acting idiotically. I commend both of you for telling your stories. I think it was very brave of you. And I think you have helped a few other equally kind but alas gulible people by posting your experiences.

It's easy to judge other people for falling for something like you both did but it only goes to show how crafty these people are that pray on fundamentally good people. We are all different and judge situations differently and see them with different eyes and emotions. Scam artists knows this and take advantage of that.

I thank you for sharing. I would never fall for something like that but the negative responses and remarks done by some other repliers got me thinking about what I just said and I realized that I am probably a little harsh on other people for making poor judgements. You helped me to see a flaw in myself.

I wish you both the best and I'm sure you will be more careful in the future.

I know this is off topic so I guess the thread will be deleted now.

Oh yeah right ... three people your account numbers? Now I know you must be joking.

The Nigerian Scams are in full force and yes they are coming out of the woodwork in many different forms. They usually entail wanting to deposit money in your account for your assistance. here in my small town .. a man who applied for a social work job in our max. security prison , landed this job after applying from California. This is Ontario Canada. Two years later he was arrested for bilking threee church members out of their savings and will likely now be deported back to where ever. Ya just never know who is out there as a wolf in sheep's vlothing.

I do actually forward their information on to the FCC, FTC, and the FBI (if I feel the FBI is necessary). I also report them to the site they originated from, the bank their trying to use as a scam, their ISP, or any other info. the give me. I try to talk to them long enough to try to get a phone number (don't know whether or not they are legit) or some other indentification/contact information so I will have some type of information to give to the feds. I quit telling them I was turning them in because that can give them time to clean up whatever mess they've made or to move.

There's a website I recently found that reports these people for you. This site is http://www.ic3.gov/ and it is "The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C)."

I had 3 guys off the same site contact me within two weeks. They "fall for you" really quick (oh PLEEAASSSEEE)!!!

I haven't seen this particular scam on POF, but on a couple of other sites. Young women have posted profiles/pictures saying things like "Their dad was English and mom was Nigerian and they are in Africa looking for some 'sucker' to bail me out of Africa (no pun intended)". I just push delete on all those ads. Unfortunately, we (both men and women) need to be extra vigilant these days.

Take care all and best of luck.

I just want to say that I appreciate this thread and everyones sharing. Nobody ever feels worse than the person who got taken advantage of. I would suggest that eveyone who offers kindness gets taken advantage of from time to time. Even the banks allow for a percentage of bad debtors. Some get hurt real bad and I can't imagine what that would be like. There are some very cruel and cold people out there. But I hope people here continue to share information and stories. I think this is a great way to inform other folks and hoping it might be helpful to someone else. Thanks for the web sites too for those who posted them.

Thanks for the laugh Pete! I think I have Yulas picture here just haven't sent it in yet.

I think we have all received those retarded e-mails about how their funds are being held by the govt and they need to open a bank account etc....
I simple e-mail them back and let them know that as soon as they western union me 100 dollars I will be glad to open a bank account for them.

Last week received an e-mail from a lady claiming she has property in Omaha and would like me to manage it. She claimed all I would need to do is collect money and send half of it each month. I dont know where she was gong with it but I told her to send me her name and address of properties so I may cross reference ownership records in Omaha County Offices. She never did respond back.

Be careful with these! Yes guys are also getting scammed with these. I talked with a few who have had encounters with similar situations when in fact it is the same guys you are talking to who are trying to get money from you. They have a couple of ways they work this! I finally quit talking to anyone out of state because of it.

Hi,

I read your story and good for you for knowing the difference. As they say some things are too good to be true, but there is always someone falling for it. I used to work for a bank and we used to see and hear about a bunch of these and some people don't understand that even if it a money order clears their account it does not mean that it is a good check.

If someone sends you an overseas money order and they tell you to deposit it and then send them half and keep the other half or send it to someone else BE AWARE!!!! This is the usual scam that is out there.

Good luck and thank you for letting everyone know.

From what I understand, many people across the US have been scamed , as well as bank & credit card fraud by the Nigerian connection. It is believed the money is being collected by male and female impersonators in order to get people to feel sorry for something bad that happened to them. Well from what I read, its all a front to finace the civil unrest, terror and warlords in that region of Africa. People need to be very aware of e-mails & IM messages ,particularly on yahoo messenger, from people in Africa. I experience this myself, but I never sent any money, and i was very skeptic when I was asked to send money to a really good looking lady in Nigeria, to help pay for her entry into the US. Which i only talked to this woman for maybe less than an hour. I believe that this person wasn't for real, because the woman in the picture was not average looking for people living in that region of the world. She looked very much like an American woman and was very beautiful....very much model material ,so to speak, plus the picture was very high quality digital photo, probably professionally taken. Not something you could just pick up at any Best Buy or Circuit City. It is important to never send anyone money that you meet over the net unless you know them personally. If money is brought up with the first hour of the conversation...BEWARE. You are being scamed. Also be leary of part time money jobs that ask you to cash checks for them at your local bank in your name and to wire the money back overseas, minus 10%, your share. Thats a definately fraud sceme and can get you in a lot of trouble with the local bank and the FBI. Its an Illegal scam where the check sent to you is phoney. Usually a very high amount. Once you wire the money theres no way to get it back and usually the check you cashed is found to be no good, then the bank is calling you asking for all the funds back, with penalties. So BEWARE of sending any money to anyone overseas or Nigeria.

I've been approached at least 10 times by Nigerians. They post handsome white men's pix on the profile, but you can tell by the way that they talk, that they don't speak English well. Now, when one tries that crap, I just tell them I'm reporting them to the authorities. They go away, but there's always more lurking around. All women should be careful.
