| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/17/2007 10:46:23 PM | Felicity--the men are getting this more than the women. I joined 3 dating sites including this one in the last few weeks for the first time. About 1/2 the responses are from "women" in Russia, Eastern Europe, Africa or Nigeria laying a foundation to ask for money, eventually asking for it. Now when I get an email from someone in Eastern Europe, Russia, or Africa I make a point, if I respond at all, of saying that I have gotten many emails from women in these countries and never give money to someone I don't know. No one should. By the way, "Plenty of Fish" seems to be more genuine than the paid dating sites, but has its share of scam artists too. I always laugh when I see comments by women about being lied to---believe me, we guys get it just as bad, maybe worse! It seems like more than half the women on these sites are either fakes, gold-diggers, scams, or worse. I guess the grass is always greener....... | |

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/17/2007 11:06:17 PM | Here is me actually in the middle of a conversation with this guy.. look at how it happens we had been talking for a few weeks.. and all of a sudden this came up.. Im really nice to him.. but when the scam begins I turn cold... Im not stupid .. this guy messages me every day with stupid lovey dovey crap and i NEVER respond soon he will get the hint. his profile states he lives in Queens.. and guess where he is....yup Africa ... I shut faster than Donald Trumps wallet when a guy asked for a Rosie O Donnell donation... its a good read.. | Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/22/2007 4:14:52 PM | Don't know if it has been mentioned on here already...have a look at 419eater dotcom and you will see all these scams exposed and some very funny stories of how the scams have been turned around against the scammers themselves.
and if you wonder where the name comes from, it relates to article #419 of the Nigerian Penal Code - Fraud Offences
Well worth a look, it speaks for its self
You will recognise a number of recurring stories/themes that have all come up in this thread on that site.
I hope the mod will allow people to view this one purely to avoid people being suckered into these scams in the first place.
and to smoothestman who posted above, your mate in the pic needs a shave !!!

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/23/2007 8:13:08 PM | I had a lady that e-mailed me through a dating site that claimed to live in Minnesota. On the first she told me what a great guy I was and that she loved me and wanted to be with me red flag number one. Then on the second time she e-mailed me she said that her parents were both killed in the terrorist bombing on Sep-11 in the USA red flag number two.I have never heard of anyone who live in America refering to 9-11 as bombings and say in the USA everyone in America knows what 9-11 is.Then she told me that her brother was a drug addict and did not care about her. Then she tells me that she flew to Nigeria because she met some guy and fell in love and went there to be with him. Then she tells me that he turned out to be a jerk and blew dust in her face and robbed her of all her valuable money jewlery in her motel room. She said that the motel took her passport and would not let her leave until she paid her bill. She did not say how much the bill was but had a click on link in the e-mail to get the motel manager and pay her bill red flag number three. And I sent her an e-mail telling her I could not pay the bill. She e-mailed back she felt like commiting suicide because I would not help her and she could not be with me and told me how great I was again and she loved me.I figured I would check out her story a bit.I checked out the 9-11 victims list and there was no one from Minnesota with that last name killed let alone a couple. Then I was wondering how if her motel room was robbed how her laptop was left behind and why she would be looking at a dating site for her sole means of getting out.The dating service had also removed her profile red flag number four.I sent her an e-mail back and told her that if she was a US citizen she could go to the US embassy and get help if she was for real and not a scammer. And then I told her she seemed like a scammer and told her all the points that did not add up in her story.Told her how dare she soil the memory of 9-11 victims in her scam. And she had a religious screen name so I told her how dare she use Gods name in a scam and may he have mercy on her.And then I told her to get lost. | |

Not this tired, Les Miserables excuse. Nigeria is the most developed nation in Africa, save for South Africa. They scam in Nigeria for the same reason they scam anywhere else. Greed and moral corruption. Not only do these scammers originate mostly from Nigeria but the entire Nigerian government is corrupt and on the take.
Well, that's part of the problem, isn't it? Nigeria has a lot of natural resources, but corruption and mismanagement have prevented most of them from being properly exploited, and, where they have, it's often prevented the profits from being properly utilized.
The GDP in Nigeria is not quite $700 per head, compared with $44,000 (rounded) in the U.S. The Nigerian Naira has decreased to 1/6 its value per U.S. dollar over the last 10 years -- less than 1/60 of its value over the last 20. Life expectancy there isn't much more than half what it is in the U.S.
My point isn't that they're poor, so they're entitled; my point is that the miserable economy is what makes the scamming profitable. Take a really, really bad economy, and put in a cheap, intangible connection (the internet) to people in a place with (relatively speaking) LOTS of money, and it's like playing the lottery; you have a small chance of making a huge score. The $1500-3000 a lucky scammer siphons out of a gullible American's bank account can take him (or her) a long, long way.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/24/2007 7:35:59 PM | Read it and weep. Or laugh. You decide.
Printed in Boing Boing:
The longtime treasurer of Alcona County in northeast lower Michigan has been removed from his job and charged with nine felonies for allegedly stealing county money to invest in the notorious online Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud Scheme, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox announced today.
Thomas Katona, 56, was arraigned in Harrisville today after an investigation that began in December when county officials learned he had directed eight unauthorized wire transfers totaling $186,500 to beneficiaries linked to the Nigerian Advance scheme, Cox said in a statement. Investigators also found that Katona had wired $72,500 of his own money to the same accounts.
This guy was a COUNTY TREASURER and he fell for it!!!

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/25/2007 12:32:56 AM | If you have any concerns about any "potential" date you can go to Romancescams dot com. Some of the profile pictures, both male and female, used by these Nigerian scam artists are there. For you lonely gents, please be aware that some of these "women" entreating you for help are actually men....using confiscated pictures and made-up profiles.
If you find yourself in this situation, you can forward your information to John at data-wales dot com...he will contact the different affliated hosts to block these scammers. Check his list of names...you are bound to see some of the names you have encountered on-line...ie. " Smith Cole"
The person I "met" was a widower who used his "injured son" to try to enlist my sympathy. The sad part is that this only raises more walls in a time and place where people are trying to come together. Listen to your inner voice...ask all the questions..even if it seems rude. Happy, safe fishing all. D.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/25/2007 2:12:12 AM | Hooo, boy! I am not the only one!Yes,I even foyed into the realm of other 'International' dating sites and yes;real hot pics<img src=http://www.plentyoffish.com/smiles/icon_201.gif border=0> all of a sudden, they have instantly 'teleported' to Nigeria, and Senegal and 'other' West African nations.Sooo, anyhooo, decided to(After a few friendly phone calls with one of my many 'millionaire heiresses')put my fancy new laptop through it's paces, and do some 'cyber'digging!Armed with the latest and greatest anti-virus,firewalls,and anti-spyware,I went into the 'Final Frontier' of cyber space in Africa."Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life down here!"Basically all I initially tried to do,was to track down a Roman Catholic church in Dakar,Senegal. So google "Senegal" then "churches",find a thread on Senegal,Nigeria Scams(have lots of patience with scrolling)then,I came across like 45 pages of 'scammers names and e-mail handles, etc.' Then I came across a not for profit site based out of the UK data-wales,right,that you can report these scams to.They are volunteers,so don't expect speedy replies!I didn't bother,as I havn't lost any money,(still trying to convince the 'bank mgr'that he can take his processing fee off the top the 5.6 million, and that he wire my new 'Bride's' money right away,so I can send her a plane ticket!)PS.I'll keep everyone posted on that endeavor if you like! Also have some 'Russian' women working the sites out of Florida and had a "Red Alert" pop up on my screen from a site that warns Canadian guys about these scammers.Forgot which one that is,because then, I decided to join POF and my computer is much happier now, because it doesn't have to work very hard, anymore! And I don't have to file a 3 pg.scam report to the site in the UK,either!Still single(sigh!) | |

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/25/2007 9:22:08 AM | Hi... Shelby04...it drives you crazy doesn't it?
Anyone can go to the www data-wales dot com site....a lot of names are listed there and addresses they feed you from Nigeria. A few of them even profess to be working for churches or missions to gain your sympathy. I am in Canada and had thought to meet some gents across the border to chat to...sigh I have narrowed my net to local boys...:( ...at least I can see their spots up close and personal, like.....smile
The scary part for me was the knowledge of the time and patience some of these "artists" will invest...upwards of a year in an on-line relationship...in hopes of a cash pay out.
The quickest way to interfere with their process is to report then to your local site and Yahoo or Hotmail if they have given you addresses there. It not only stops their scam of you but of anyone else they had on the line.
The most frustrating part is the distrust that slips into a person's mind. I think that is perhaps the highest cost paid. Some have said a lesson learned in naiveity, I guess someone thought I needed to learn the hard way....lol
Here's to fishing in daylight.....

Got this one a few minutes ago.
From: The Manager, International Commercial Bank Ghana First Light Branch Accra, Ghana. Tel:+233-246-110439
My Dear Friend,
This proposal is real and I want you to consider it very important and I am assuring you that it is not a joke or anyhow letter. I got your contact during my search on the Internet. My name is Mr. Steven Mensah. I am the manager of the International Commercial Bank Ghana, First Light Branch. I am a Ghanaian married with two kids.
I am writing to solicit your assistance in the transfer of US$ 3, 550.000.00. This fund is the excess of what my branch in which I am manger made as profit during the last year. I have already submitted an approved End of the Year report for the year 2006 to my Head Office here in Accra and they will never know of this Excess. I have since then, placed this amount of US$ 3, 550.000.00 on a SUSPENSE ACCOUNT without a beneficiary.
As an officer of the bank, I cannot be directly connected to this money thus I am impelled to request for your assistance to receive this money into your bank account. I intend to part 25% of this fund to you while 75% shall be for me. I do need to stress that there are practically no risk involved in this. It's going to be a bank-to-bank transfer. All I need from you is to stand as the original depositor of this fund.
If you accept this offer, I will appreciate your timely response.
With regards, Steven Mensah.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/25/2007 12:53:59 PM | Profession, Age, Marital Status?
hah ah aha ha ha ha ha Why? haha ha hahaha ha hahaha
I always tell them why on earth would I do this and take just 25% as my share? If you're stupid enough to wire me, a complete stranger, your $3.5 million dollars, then I'm bright enough to keep the whole pie, bubba!
Better yet, convert it to small bills, pack into some really good Samsonite and leave it at the front desk. I'll be there by 9am to pick it up and I promise to hold it for you!
:)
Anything else I can do for you, Honey, Baby, Sweetie-Pie? I love you long time, OK?
I don't intend to be mean to anyone, but good grief! NEVER, and I mean NEVER send money to someone you don't know. Refer them to their local embassy, or Red Cross agency.
Forget about the reading the websites to memorize photos. Those aren't the real people anyway. Enjoy it as a big laugh for the evening. Just recognize that once a conversation turns to cash, it's a scam.
Keep your mind on your money and your money on your mind. You worked hard for it so why give it up so easily?

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 1/25/2007 10:41:09 PM | If you want to see what the scams are, and want to see what some people do for fun with these scammers, try a site called "419 eater." "419" is the number of the statute in the Nigerian criminal code that makes what the scammers do illegal (although it seems it's never enforced). They get your e-mail by basically fishing for it. They don't care WHO'S e-mail adress it is, just so they can find a victim to scam.
On the site, my favorite scam-buster goes by "Shivermetimbers." He's absolutely brilliant, and the things he makes the scammers do will absolutely have you rolling on the floor. In one instance, he got one scammer to have himself tattooed with a sign that says "baited by shiver." Pics and all.
