Eddie,i get the lottery ones all the time too and what i love about it is that they never address me by name.If i were giving away 5 million dollars for a promotional contest,i certainly would know that winners name but instead it's dear sir or madam{strike one}.And it's a contest that i never joined but they just happened to pick my email address out of the blue.I watched a wkyc channel 3 out of cleveland news broadcast and the government is starting to crack down on these scammers.

I had one of those so called "Nigerians" email me before. The dumbest thing he/she did was claiming to be a peace corp volunteer while using pics of a (super?)model. Seriously, if someone was a peace corp volunteer, shouldn't she have half-starved children in the background of her pics (as opposed to laying half-naked on a beach)?

It's funny what some people will do just to get laid... LOL! (in reference to the guy who actually paid $400k). I don't know about some people, but telling me "I Love you" in the 1st, 2nd or even 10th email calls for suspicion. - Excuse my sarcasm, (hormones aside) this man may have been truly aulturistic in his intentions to save the poor girl from harm, but still... Seriously, I once told a "scammer" to go to the US embassy; they'd do something to get her out of Nigeria. I forgot what her response was, but it was something sob and convincing; these people are sharp... and utterly heartless, I'll give them that much credit.

The lesson learned: for $400k, this guy would have been better off with a mail-order bride!

and for the rest of us...

Desperation leads to money not well spent... (This statement is not as creative or witty as I would prefer, but as not to offend anyone, it will have to do... :)

The things people do in the name of "love"... *shakes head*

Nigeria is well known for this...It is hard for us to picture a living in a nation,
that is in civil war and poverty, beyond our wildest dreams...
Such an environment, will give birth to desperate means of survival...
I think anyone who starts, getting to involved with someone, in another country
on the Internet, is acting out a fantasy and their need for companionship...
This can lead into disastrous situations...Never trust people from other countries...
It is dangerous enough dealing with your own environment, let alone bringing people in from other countries, who are going to drain you emotionally and financially.
and as for falling for their pathetic sob stories and feeling obliged to help,
I will close with this statement:

"The road to Hell, is paved with good intentions"

This Shit goes on all the time. And Yes, MEN do get royally hosed by those damsels in distress - any prick posing as a beautiful young woman with a sad story. Easy Target!

But, my girlfriend got hosed this past summer in a nigerian scam on our local buy & sell site.
She advertised a 12 mega pixal digital camera, got a hit who promised that Paypal Account could deduct $ from credit card. Sent the item and was never paid $ 500 U.S. Small beans.

Also, just watched a documentary LAST NIGHT on this very thing NIGERIAN SCAMS.
HUGE MARKET-

Next, BEWARE IDENTITY THEFT

Go over EVERY Credit Card and Bank statments monthly,

Limit the number of cards you own and use, cancel not just destroy any that you keep and don't use..

This is Big Now!:

The thing about enforcement is that USA law does't apply to these people, and they don't always come from their namesake Nigeria, where there IS a law in place (419 on their version of juris prudence - hence the name Nigerian 419 Scam).

How many of you guys get the letters from the "Russian" women who want to come here and marry you? Written by a poor online translator yet....!

"I saw your information and I am sure I'd like to meeting you."

The good news is that there are some people fighting back. The site I mentioned before is where a few volunteers "bait" the scammers into wasting their time and resources on someone who knows it's a scam and never pays off. Some of the baiters use elaborate (but extremely comical) ruses that the scammers buy hook, line, and sinker.

The idea is to burn the thieves (that's all a scammer is) to the point that it becomes less appealing to them. Make no mistake---some of these scammers are, in fact, worse than just thieves. Some scams are designed to lure some unsuspecting foreigner into places like Nigeria to "complete the deal," only to find that they've entered without a visa (making them criminals), or are threatened to be (and eventually are) killed. A number of foreign nationals (including one American, who's been confirmed dead) are still known to be missing after flying to Nigeria. These people are not to be taken too lightly, and the baiters don't. They're all criminals, mostly just thieves, but some are (in fact) murderers and kidnappers.

Still, it's fun to watch what the baiters make the scammers do to come away with nothing. The letters archive on the site (called "419eater") show what comical things are possible when you find out one thing---the scammers are nearly as gullible as the people who fall for the scams. I, personally, just get huge laughs out of the scammers and the hoops the baiters make them jump through for nothing, LOL.

For most of us, the best tactic is to just delete the letter. Some of us who are more adventurous might try just "playing along" until the scammers request payment for some fee, tax, or other (common in "lottery" scams), and just report the bank account that the scammers are using to the bank, who could get the authorities involved (if the scammer's new, he'll never know what hit him!LOL)

After reading nicebliuz post,i thought of something that i read not too long ago in the grand rapids press and it was about this poor guy that lived in texas, was a contractor,in his fifties, lonely and had been talking to a woman from brazil for a long time.To make a long story short,he went to see her a couple of times, his friends and family had warned him that some things seemed supicious but he was in love and assured them it was o.k.So,i believe it was his third visit and nobody back home had heard from him in quite awhile, began to worry and checked it out, called the brazilian authorities, found out that his bank account was emptied{triple figures}.He was tied up and beaten to death by the brazilian womans real boyfriend.I believe his sister lives in lansing if memory serves me right.I think that i have most of this story straight but if anyone else remembers reading it and has more to add or corrections, feel free.It was just such a sad story. Being single isn't easy but niether is being married.

I'd like to learn how to hack into spammers and scammers' computers so their computers completely CRASH! Unfortunately my computer skills only cover basic use of the "net and general software such as MS Word. If only I knew how to hack into their computers, boy would I have fun wrecking the spammers and scammers' opportunities to cheat people!! I wish there were more hackers out there who knew how to damage scammers' computers. They DESERVE IT!!

Have had 4 of them. I make everyone now send me an e-mail and I run the ISP to see where they are. You are not alone. It makes me so mad. the names I have seen being used for the scam are as follows: 1) Terrylovescaringwoman4adore(yahoo) based out of chicago supposedly. he is really a 23 year old Nigerian named Odofu) When confronted admitted to targeting women my age 47-because they percieve them to have more money than young ones. - 2) Simple_diaz((yahoo)-says he is in england but got sent to Nigeria and his mother who lives there is now sick and cannot recieve the treatment without money3) eddyI think 74 on yahoo 4 ) I also beleive tom.brad0z to be one also. His ISP is showing him baded out of Israel and surprise he is in Africa on business.

designingwoman;

Try looking at the site I've posted already: 419eater.com. Check out the "letters archive" for some of the hilarious things some of the volunteer scambaiters do to the scammers. They'll even teach you how to do some of them yourself, if you'd like to learn how to fight back.

Me, I just try to waste their time with delaying tactics and annoying little things like "misunderstanding" their instructions. Then, turn in the bank account they're using to the bank as "fraudulent purpose." If they're in the UK or US, they won't know what hit 'em! At least, as long as they're tied up with me, they have less time to use on a more unsuspecting victim.

I think if someone refuses to get on camera or voice chat, repeated says they don't have a cam, etc, then don't even bother talking to them anymore.

I was suspcious enough at his slow typing and not very good spelling, and also vague answers to specific questions like where he went to medical school, etc. If someone can't be upfront in the beginning, they are not worth your time.

I agree anyone who says they love you within an hour of chatting is pulling something. I think it's ridiculous to say that to someone you've never met in person much less someone you've just met online.

But hearing the voice and seeing them on camera should show for sure whether or not they are who they say they are in their words and pics.

I'd consider myself pretty quick on the uptake and I'm sorry I wasted five minutes talking to this clown but glad it wasn't more than a few hours.

I hope if you're being scammed that it didn't get far for you either, and that you took note of some of the clues. People like this are really bad and they're going to get their bad karma back around again. Shame to prey on others like this.

Ya, this happens to me all the time. Hot girls too! What a shame these people have no lives that they have to sit around and come up with ideas that only hurts people in the end. I'm sure like .5% are legit but it happens in Canada all the time. Hey scammers, how about, "Get a real Job". You obviously have the business skills and knowhow. Just apply it in a positive direction and it will come back 10 fold. Sorry to hear about all you victums out there. That sucks. I've been ripped off for 45,000. It sucks but, hey there's always more money. Live and learn, live and learn. Next..

Yep I just sent a check for 5,000 to a foreignor who lives in argentina. He won the florida state lottery he lives in argentina and couldn't get a passport to America to collect the winnings. He needed to 5,000 for traveling expenses and passports but with no credit or savings he was SOL. After knowing and trusting his word for a few days I sent him the money. He says as soon as he collects his winning he will repay and give me 20 percent of the winnings added along with it.

I'M GOING TO WALT DISNEY WORLD!!!!

We can get on here and talk about oral sex etc but we can't give a heads up on scams? What is this not politically correct?

Please enlighten me here?

That's easy to answer.
This is a dating site where oral sex and relation tips are welcome. If you want to have a heated discussion about scams then find yourself another forum where that place particularly specialize in such talks. duh!
