| Nigerian Scams Posted: 2/13/2007 10:38:10 AM | LMAO... I've had this happen too! The past 2 weeks have been weird!
I posted an add in events on a site because I do private bartending for birthdays, anniversaries, corporate events....
This guy contacts me and tells me he is a musician over in the UK and he needs my services. He will be in the US on the 27th to play for someones 70th birthday. (Ok usually the person throwing the party or the caterer contacts me... NOT the entertainment!) He tells me he needs me to respond with my photo on a cd or dvd ( the nigerians are getting smarter... they no longer post pics of themselves they post pics of real people... just not them!) He wanted my home address... why in the world would someone need my home address for me to do a bartending gig!? (He should have only asked for references)
I posted an add for a roommate... Some gal responded stating she was a model from AZ but currently in the UK... she wanted to rent my room and could I send pictures of the room and myself (my add had pics of my place) she states her old boss can send me the money. She wanted more info. I repsonded that if she is a model I could see her moving to NYC or LA but NOT San Marcos Cali!!!!
Another site: guy contacts me tells me how beautiful my eyes are blah blah blah wants to be on my yahoo.. His profile said he lives in Poway, CA... Ok... so start chatting and I think he forgot about Poway! LOL his dad died and he had to run his business in Africa.. LOL he'd say the weirdest crap like how much he CARES about me. Hello u don't know me. Then one day he contacts me and tells me he needs my help. An old client from Cali owes him money... and he needs me to help him.... He can't cash a cashiers check in Africa so he needs me to do it for him... You see he's gaining trust in me! LMFAO. I told him that they should be able to WIRE funds to him and he says no its a check. I explained that a Cashiers check.... is the same thing as cash ... since he was indicating they didn't have cash! He told me to give him my home address.. I'd receive a fed-x and that I needed to cash it and I could keep $200.00 for myself..... and send him the rest. LMAO!!!!
Ok sorry for my rant! NON of this was from POF I must add!!!!!

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 2/13/2007 11:19:15 PM | | Rant, Coastergal? That's what this thread's topic is--those "419" scams. If you really want a good laugh, check out that site I posted earlier (419eater) and take a peek at the "letters archive." It's comical reading. I think you'd feel better knowing that the scammers themselves are being taken advantage of---for comic effect. | |

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 2/28/2007 8:23:45 PM | Just found my 1st one. Username: Kelly_wilson Got a story about father dead, mother sick, will die in 10 days, uncle is too mean to give her money for travel. Once they discovered that I knew what they really were, they babbled in foreign tongue. And all on Yahoo! chat after my 1st e-mail through this plentyoffish.com system. This is by far the worst insult you can hand back to them according to the 4-1-9 Forum thread.. This text taken from:

NNA GI NA ARA MKPURU AMU YOU MUMU PASS YOURSELF.ODE BURUKU,OLOSHE,OLORIBU,IYALAYAEH,AMU NNAGI,IGBU NNEGI,FOOL LIKE YOU.
please don't ask me to translate, but they will be very offended. of course, this will be the last bit of conversation you may have with the scammer, so, drag it out, fill their time, save some other poor fool's money/pride, and make it count.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 3/7/2007 6:31:30 AM | 'I tried looking for a place online where you could post the people so someone else didn't get caught but I can't find one. Anyway, don't send money to someone you have never seen in person. Some of them are very good at what they do.'
hi ITV, sorry your kindness was taken advantage of. There is a site you can look at to find out if someone you think is dodgy actually is. Do a search for romancescam and you'll see photos of real-life models whose photographs are being used by scammers.
It's sad that we've all had to become a little cynical.. but safer.

| Russian dating Scams Posted: 3/7/2007 11:20:37 AM | Beware Russian women dating as well. I signed up for Yahoo Personals free trial and a young Russian woman responded. Seemed innocent enough after 2 replies but then she wrote of deperately needing to leave Russia and wanting very badly to travel to the USA to meet me. The catch was that she wanted cash money sent by Western Union to a bogus travel agency for an airplane ticket. When I replied to her that I think this is a scam I did not receive any more e mails. So be aware of Russian women dating scams... see the link below.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/9/2007 10:36:02 PM | | Was there something about 2006 or WHAT? I had joined myspace back then and my inbox was littered with emails from men from Nigeria... 'my wife died, I need to find a God fearing woman to be my slave (essentially) and move myself and my children to Canada'... omg! It was insane! I think I had something like 10 new messages a day for awhile. Then nothing, then 10 more for a few days... so I changed my profile there to 'friends' and voila! It stopped! I was totally livid with it... but never even responded to any of them... so it seems I saved myself a lot of extra grief! | |

And it's the same for men, they put up a nice picture, you reply and you get the same story that they lost their husband or father or are for modelling jobs in Nigeria.. LOL
The moment I hear Nigeria i'm outta there...

What IS it about Nigeria that breeds such disgusting behavior???
If I can add my two cents, I was watching a CNN special on Nigerian scammers.
The Nigerians that scam can be very clever. The government is lax on enforcing laws against scamming Americans. There's also this picture of Americans as fat, dumb, and rich, and easy for the taking. In addition, I've heard stories in general of Nigerians being shady people (from other Africans at that). They've long had this reputation as liars, theives, and cheaters. While I'm sure most of them are well meaning people, there are a disproportionate amount that are very shady.
I know this guy who got scammed out of $300, because this girl using a model pic she stole from a site. I knew things were wrong when she implied herself to be a "white" girl in Nigeria whose mother was sick. Why would her mother be in Nigeria? What job did she have? I asked him to ask her, and she couldn't come up with a response.
She also claimed she needed money for a passport. Her "agent" said they cost $600, and she was $300 short. I researched and found passports were under $100. When he relayed this to her, she claimed she couldn't find the website.
I could go on about the illogical statements and lies. To make a long story short, we busted her by finding her on this website of known Nigerian scammers. The cop station I called said they don't have the resources to stop the scammers, so we couldn't bring her to justice. Be very careful, yall. If things don't add up, and your lover constantly asks for money, suspiscion should arise.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/14/2007 11:37:38 PM | its fun to get these people going. Boy Nigeria sure has a lot of millionaires, a lot of princes, and there is a lot of unclaimed money. Get them to take silly pics of themselves to prove who they are.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/15/2007 8:21:48 AM | | Nigerian or Russian...Funny,I have more Russian gf online but have never seem to meet them. If I only had as many gf in real life as online,I wouldn't even need to go on a dating site. The letters never seem to be an answer to yours when you write back, but a ditto that has just the names of the person they are emailing filled in... I will ask a direct question and they never seem to get answered. The need to make an example of these people whether male or female. | |

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/15/2007 8:39:20 AM | The UK Lottery is big too. I have a throwaway email account with a bogus name (Bob Balou) and I get two messages a week informing me that I, Mr Balou, have won the UK lottery.
I once created an account for Digger T. Dogg (the T stands for "the"), my dog at the time. And he started to get email from stock brokers, financial planners, someone wanted to hire him as the US representative for some importing firm....
I love it!!! | |

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/15/2007 4:51:51 PM | | Gee, isn't it messed up what kind of fools they take us for? Just LOVE the 419eater site, it's full of those pics you suggested, guitar. The letters archive on there is loaded with them. It's a riot! | |

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/15/2007 5:08:27 PM | I have had a few of them, but not in the last 6 months. This is the only site I am on, so I don't get any on here.
However, my daughter is 18, and she is on a few sites. She had 23 messages from the Nigerian scammers in a period of a week or so. They seem to be all over the place. We have to weed through the messages. It is tiring, to say the least. She keeps deleting and blocking them. Gonna have to start working on a cyber prison to put them all in!

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/26/2007 7:47:21 PM | Oprah did a whole show devoted to these scams. They are real and they are going on everywhere and alot of people have lost alot of money because of it.
I Have run into the same pic of some model guy on other sites. All with fake names and locations.. Oprah showed a few of the pics.. this was a few months ago. everytime I have reported a profile... it was deleted by the site.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 4/26/2007 7:51:25 PM | In the past year I have had about 40 messeges from girls in West Africa, they are all the same thing. They want me to send them Money to get their dead father's money out of a security holding. It is not just girls from West Africa anymore, I have received a few from girls in Russia now too.

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 9/4/2007 3:15:55 PM | | Those types should be arrested. Maybe the FBI should go undercover in Nigeria. We could always report it to the Justice Department. | |

| Nigerian Scams Posted: 9/4/2007 3:45:23 PM | | Yes its definatly a scam and Im ashamed to say it happened to me too. Obviously scam artists are praying on men and women alike, the story is about the same, had to go to Nigeria for an emergency and then needs money to come back home to USA,and promises to pay back with interest because they have money but cant get access to it because in nigeria women cant receive moneys. They lead you to belive they fallen in love with you sight unseen and will share enormous wealth upon their return, but that never happens somthing terrible always comes up,these scam artists are working all the dating services not just POF. Beware if it sounds to good to be true it is. Luckily I got wise after sending only about 7000$. It could have been much worse. Even after informing this person that I had reported her to an internet crime reporting agency she persisted. I finallymanaged to block her email but she still tries to contact me via instant messenger(havent figured out how to block that yet) Lonely men and women beware! | |

Those types should be arrested. Maybe the FBI should go undercover in Nigeria. We could always report it to the Justice Department.
The FBI can't operate in a foreign country without the assistance & permission of that country. That will never happen because the Nigerian government knows what's going on and refuses to do anything about it. There would be no reason to go undercover. Walk into any Internet cafe in Lagos and they running these scams in the open.
Since the Nigerian police don't do anything the best defense is education. The 419eater.com guys are great too. They waste the time of the scammers with their baiting.
