Pity comes due to being with a whinny person who talks non stop about their disability. Its the inner person you fall in love with not the shell.
If she was upbeat, possitive, a great person, kind, caring, compassionate, honest, had integrity, made you laugh, was genuine, a limp shouldn't matter at all!
Yep well said and so true... I have Cerebral Palsy and never have problems meeting interesting people. I have great friends and some of them are ex's too... So problems dating when you have a disability may depend on some factors like degree of disability, but the biggest issue is usually the disabled person's own attitude.
As for why I use internet dating... I am not into the bar scene, I am busy and I work from home so I don't get the chance to meet lots of people other than the clients I do psychic readings for and folks who are already good friends... That being the case I just don't date the patients as a doctor would say LOL! And so being online lets me see who else is out there that I might want to meet.

I'm not talking vegitative state here, but an active, nice disabled person
Good to define the parameters here LOL... As "an active, nice disabled person" who knows I might even date you if you were close enough and I thought you were normal enough...

I find it hard to wrap my brain around the fact that some people would turn down a date with someone simply and soley based on a physical disability. I know it happens and it happens a lot, I just have trouble understanding the concept. But then both of my last two partners had health issues that required minor accommodation.
I just take it for granted that by the time one hits my age, health issues are going to be a given.
There are so many more important things to be considered in finding good dates and life partners to worry about something like a physical impairment.
Amen!

To be disabled is a mere inconvenience to those of us with spirit. Maybe I can't do the fast dances ... or lack the grace for ballrooms ... but a long, slow hug on the dance floor is a heartwarming experience. Mountain climbing and long humps through the boonies are out of the question ... but a slow hand-in-hand stroll along the boardwalk is togetherness. In slower motion ... every moment lasts longer. Behind the steering wheel on a long drive? I'm in my element ... and I get to stop and enjoy the sights along the way more than I could when time was of the essence. I still feel, see, smell, hear and taste the same things ... possibly with a lot more gratitude than someone who has never experienced loss. I can appreciate life. Like most "disabled" folks, I focus on those things on which I am still able. To do anything less would be a handicap. Would I date who can experience life's pleasures in the same was as me? You bet! Steve
I hear ya!

I would not rule out a man with any disability, lost limbs, blind, deaf, wheelchair, as long as his mind was active and intact. If he could love me honestly and with kindness, why not. With my own disability of course lifting him or heavy duty would depend on someone else to help, but I'm not shallow enough to say I wouldn't see if we had the basis for love or a great friendship... to do so would be poking a pin in my own eyes.
Hmmm good to hear! And given that you are are a woman LOL I would not be looking to date you LOL Re my earlier reply was just a joke... Sorry I thought you were a guy just quickly reading your username and misread it.
It disheartens me reading this. It makes me feel like I sometimes do in the mall when using my elbow crutches because my leg hurts to bad to walk without them, when people either gwak and avoid, or simply won't make eye contact. I'm am no less who I am here or to anyone else who knows and loves me, because someone is unable to be open minded enough to accept me as I am. That is their disability and to me more glaring than my own.
Yep you have hit the nail on the head there!

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 8/15/2005 6:13:11 PM | __Why being disable be a reason to date or not? I date "the person". That's includes all of her. Not just her body, her face or her mind. A disability, physical or mental, should never limit someone to have a date. __Think of this for a moment. Why do we date? To enjoy someone's company, to laugh and to communicate and challenge each others mind. Well this is why I date. No disability will stop me. __I have shared a coffee with a mentaly challenge lady a while back and we never laugh so hard. A clerk had to tell us to be quiet. She had a very interesting way to look at life. In ways she is much smarter than me. She made me richer by sharing her toughts on life. Bless her.

Posted: 8/15/2005 6:28:28 PM | | Of Course I would!!..I want a "sexy sensuous" woman....Do you honestly believe that to be sexy and sensuous its in your body??.... Thats pretty conceited and pathetic!!....SEXY and SENSUOUS is definitely in the "MIND"...and after the actual "act" theres sooooo much more to the loving than that!!.....I enjoy spontaneous "creativity" and there again its in the "mind" first!!....Oh yeah!!.....and... AMEN to that!!

I can't count the amount of emails I recieved here from men and women alike asking my opinion or advise on something. It has been amazing. Being honest in this thread about my disability to me isn't frightening in the least. In fact it is empowering.
Yep disclosure can be empowering when you have the right attitude about it! I am glad you brought up this thread and that there are many open minded, understanding folks on POF

I'd like to think that if I ever were that misfortunate to lose my body, that I would not expect my love to waste hers.
Personally...I don't think it would be a "waste" at all....what could be more awesome and gratifying to be loved by someone with such a depth that they see beyond the disability?? They see YOU...the real you??
I am "disabled"...though the term is sooo...passe'! Mine is not a physical or visible disability...I have a Cochlear Implant. I also work in a field with clients of every sort of disabillity...and I have to tell you, in most cases, they make better employees, better friends, and yes...even better lovers! (Note: I do not know the latter based on experiences with clients!!! LMAO I have also dated men with disabilities.)
It has been proven that when we lose one sense, limb, etc...another part of our body compensates for such. In my case...excellent vision, intellect ;) and sense of smell are extremely strong. Disabled lovers TRY HARDER to please their partners...and very unselfishly!

Hate to sound like a coldhearted botch, but we never know how we'll react in any given situation.
Nothing wrong with admitting the truth... we don't know how we will react to things till we are facing them!
For example dating someone who is a heavy drinker... Alcoholism runs in my family so I said I never would be able to deal with that. Then I met someone who is a great person who has a drinking problem. I found I wanted to try anyway. It is not something I want in my life but having dated a person who is struggling with this situation, I learned something about myself, my family and this person who I really have come to love in spite of that situation. We are good friends now because we can accept the good the bad and the ugly in each other so to speak. I don't know what the future holds for this friend and I, but I am not sorry I looked past the drinking to discover another wonderful but fragile human being.

The nice thing is, whoever gets me, gets a great gal who knows herself inside out and likes what she is. Now, if the fates allow his path to cross mine one day, it will enhance my life not make it.
BINGO! Totally agree with you and see this the same way!

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 8/24/2005 2:51:36 PM | I had a friend who was disabled with polio as a child and walked with a pronounced limp. I could not deal with it, even if she was a super person. It is because I had severe disabilities earlier in life until I was 30. I overcame some of it. The worst was I had a severe shyness problem. I made up my mind with my own disabilities I could not handle marrying someone with them because I couldn't even deal with my own, much less someone elses's. People on here have called me shallow Hal, ever name in the book. But that's just me. Some people can deal with it can some can't. I have overcome severere disabilities but I still have some problems that have affected me my entire life.

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 8/24/2005 4:21:15 PM | | Yes, i would date some one who is disabled. just because some one is disabled does not mean that they are not worth being with. I would love to get married to a woman who is disabled, no matter how she is disabled. and i would date or marry a woman who has health problems as well. just as long as the woman does not smoke or drink all of the time. so if any of you ladies who are reading this is disabled or has health issues finds me attractive and would like to get to know me better, then i would love to hear back from you. and i would greatly appreciate it if you are willing to relocate to missouri so we can be with each other as well. i am not into judgeing people because of age, race, disability or even health issues. i am only human and i know you are human as welll. so, lets chat some time soon. sincerely.paul | |

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 8/24/2005 4:32:37 PM | | Absolutely. I have dated a man with a disability. It is the person that is on the inside that counts. I have dated perfectly healthy men that are more disabled because of their attitude on life than someone with physical limitations. The man I dated with the disability was the most wonderful man I have ever met. For the happiness I felt while we were dating, I would not trade that for anything. I feel sorry for people who don't 'GET LIFE' and are still into being shallow. Disabled men/woman can be just as attractive, if not more. A person's attitude whether disabled or not determines the type of person they are. | |
