| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/12/2005 7:23:07 PM | Us Americans think you friendly Canucks have a speech impediment. We like ya anyhow... in that whole "kid we aren't mean to but wouldn't invite to play on our team" sort of way.
Nah, my closest friends are Canadian and I've been chatting with them about as long as I've been on the net.

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/12/2005 8:08:24 PM | Yes, I would date another person with a disabilty. We would figure out something on the refrigerator if need be. I am in wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down. I have it posted on my profile. I have yet to meet anyone on this site or receive email from anyone. Now, that may be because I do not have a picture posted or it might be my disability scares them off. I don't consider myself disabled. I am challenged at things I am not supposed to be able to do and figure out how to do them one way or another. For instance I fell from treestand in hunting accident but that did not stop me from figuring out a way to get back in that tree and hunt again. OKAY people we do not have the plague. Our bodies just a little different. | |

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/12/2005 8:30:28 PM | No way I could ever give up. This disability didn't just effect me it affected everyone around me. I could never let my friends and family down. Anyway thanks georgie for the thread. | |

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/12/2005 10:18:03 PM | I still haven't heard any logic to support an answer like "depends on the disability". Me? I can say truthfully, I would not date anyone whose handicap is self imposed ... something that can be modified ... like a bad attitude, or narrow-mindedness. I would shy away from an unchecked emotional impairment. Stable? Not a problem. Physical limitations mean so little in an emotional sphere. I've met able-bodied people who didn't skydive, mountain climb, dance or hump through the boonies. Even the word, like I've read somewhere in this thread, has its negative connotation. Dis? Means to take away from. What's the matter with focussing on the positive ... this ability? Steve | |

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/13/2005 2:48:31 AM | Im hearing impaired, without my aids I cant hear at all. So I got the curse of the number one problem women complain about......Guys dont listen ! I really want to listen and hear every word a date has to say to me but this make it hard to do. But I put alot of effort in it and ladies in the past have noticed this and praised me for it. Got the nice guy treatment though -_- Other than that Im confident in my abilities and personality as a date ..V. ^^.V..

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/13/2005 4:14:14 AM | what about a mental problem? Something that leaves his personality more or less intact?
say minimal brain damage, short term memory imparment, epilepsy, ADD. I'm assuming worse thatn physical, but how much worse?

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/13/2005 4:30:13 AM | Yeah, I think I can confidently say I'd date a gal with disabilities. I've been on short term dates with one. Im not sure about severe disabilities like paralysis or amputation though. I've never put tons of thought into it, to be honest. | |

That was discussed earlier in the thread, boundaries were made.

Understood. Fair non topicality complaint. I will attempt to further define the thrust of my comment. It may still be too non topical I'm not sure.
The more I read about this the more I wonder about that though. There's a lot of "as long as it doesn't affect the person inside" and "A disability doesn't affect who you are" replies.
What if it did? Folks got flamed for giving "it depends on the disability" answers for physical ailments but a lot of the physical ailment answers by contrast become very negative toward non physical ones.
I bow to Georgie's judgment on whether actual situations should be discussed. Mental issues are a different kettle of fish of course and their very discussion may turn things into an untenable mess, which may be why the question so specifically avoided them.
I found comparison interesting though.

the chair is not their disability. they asked for our opinions and i gave them mine. sorry to hear you have a problem with that.
So if you were dating a women who became disabled you'd probably dump her? Good to know.

| Would you date someone who is disabled. Posted: 3/14/2005 8:27:13 AM | | I find in having a lot of physically challenged friends that it is the unphysically challenged who are for the most part disabled by closeminded attitudes. | |
