Nope sorry.
What you will have with matt v diego is what you had with couture vs tito..
BOTH are crosstrained WRESTLERS.

In other words they both do more than wrestle but they base their fighting style heavily off of wrestling. Diego was a HS state champ..Once..in new mexico, not bad..not bad at all.
Matt Hughes?
2 time NCAA division 1 all-american: placed 8th as a junior and 5th as a senior, was undefeated until the ncaa championships.

BJJ- Lets see trained by Militech..Yeah I think he has BJJ covered too. The only question in my mind would be strikes.

No way Diego beats Hughes..NONE.

to arlovski's credit he did suffer knee and ankle injuries checking a leg kick, he was actually suspended by the Nevada Stated atheletic comission until Sept 7th for not reporting the injury to his corner at the end of the second round.

Hughes lost to Penn at UFC 46 because he was way too****. He made a basic mistake which obviously revealed how much he underestimated Penn. Watch the fight on youtube or vidlife. Hughes made a mistake you're taught to avoid on day 1.... don't give up your back. I don't think we'll see that happen again.

He made that mistake because Penn forced him too. Thats skill, not luck. Penn's jits is excellent.

And to the guy who said that Hughes Jit's is better than Diego's. Just watch the Diego vs Mercello Garcia Abu Dahbi match. I think Hughes would win, but there is no way Hughes has better jits than Diego....:)

The way I see it GSP IS the current champ. He beat the man who beat the man. Penn beat Hughes, and GSP beat Penn. Regardless of the politics involved, technically speaking GSP IS THE MAN right now.

I'm not sure you guys understand how good Diego's grappling really is. He lasted a long time with Mercello Garcia before getting armbarred. Google the vid or go to youtube. He is a wrestler, yes, but you DO NOT last with Marcello unless you have some solid jits.

I think I am more excited about Swick - Loiseau, though Hughes - Penn should be good. But Swick and Loiseau are both fast fighters who can end fights in a heartbeat. Should be interesting to see if Swick is ready for the big time or not.

Hughes didn't lose because Penn forced him to make a mistake. Matt rolled to give up his back for an ankle lock. You can't force somebody to do that. When you actually spend some time on the mat you learn the difference between forcing somebody to make a mistake, and a mistake caused by arrogance. Every part of the first Penn-Hughes fight shows that Matt was over-confident. BJ's skill didn't beat Hughes, Hughes' own foolishness lost him that fight.

A lot of people are calling GSP the real champ. Why, I have no idea. Penn beat Hughes and GSP beat Penn. Ok, and Hughes beat GSP. We'll go around in circles all day talking about this. Matt Hughes is holding belt so Matt Hughes is the real champ.

Everything that Diego Sanchez does, Matt Hughes does better. Hughes is bigger, stronger, faster, a better athlete, better wrestler, better striker. And I'm not sold on Diego's so-called BJJ game. Diego can't submit most of the cans the UFC hands him. Cans who are hand picked to make his record seem more impressive than it really is. The only people he's been able to finish have been Gassaway (a glorified boxer) and Florian (who was competing 2 weight classes heavier than his normal).

ffryan:

Well I have spent time on the mat. I have done BJJ for about 4 years (about 2 and a half with my current club: Franco/Behring). And I can tell you that Bj's Jiu Jitsu is well ahead of Hughes'. Hughes is a strong wrestler, but wrestlers have a lot of bad habits that lead them to giving up positions. Hughes' Jits is probably good enough that he would know better than to do this but Penn is phenominal. The hardest part with dealing with wrestlers is escaping from the bottom once they have gained cross side or side headlock.

Once again, go to google and watch Diego's Abu Dahbi macth against Mercello Garcia. If you are unfarmilliar with Marcello then you need check out the Garcia/Sanchez Abu Dahbi match. This guy is one of the very best in the world right now (along with Jacare and Roger Gracie), and you DO NOT give Marcello a hard time unless your grappling is very good.

And the flaw in your logic is that GSP beat Penn AFTER Hughes beat GSP and lost to Penn. So once again GSP beat the man who beat the man regardless of who has the title.

Actually I am surprised you would question Diego's grappling considering you have MMA experience. Who do you train with in Toronto? And what organisations did you fight in? TKO, Apex, UCC?

Have you ever done Joslin's? If so how did you do? Right now I'm training for it (this will be my third year) and as long as I stay healthy I think I can do well. Probably gonna be quite a few guys in my div. I'll be doing Gi and no Gi so hopefully I can come away with something.

I wrestled in HS and did TKD for a while as well. Not sure if I ever want to do an MMA match, but I wouldn't rule it out. Luckily if I do I have some of the best guys in Canada to train me.

I am sorry I watched diego v garcia..Ok he survived for 12 minutes...that IS a big deal but in MMA I havent been THAT impressed with Diegos sub abilities. His sub defense very good. But sub offense to me, mediocre ofr a pro fighter.

I honestly do think that today, Hughes is better in wrestling and Jits as well as stronger!

I also think he beats Penn.

Penn looked BAD during his fight with GSP, he didnt seem to have the fuel tank ready whcih is really inexcusable considering it was for a title shot (which he got by default)..Lets face it Penns BJJ is light years ahead of GSP's also but he had GSP in almost NO danger that whole fight.

But when have you even really seen Diego go for a sub? I think Diego just prefers to finish the fight with strikes if he can. I can't even recall seeing Diego go for a sub in MMA, altho my memory may be cloudy.

true but if all he has fromt op is G n P I dont see him keeping hughes down. Conversely off his back he is more of a sweeper and scrambler than a sub guy. The thing about Matt being a better wrestler is he can outscramble Diego.

I certainly agree that wrestlers have bad habits, giving up their back being the most obvious one. I'm not convinced with Diego's ability to use BJJ in MMA. How is it that he can hang with Marcello Garcia yet he can't finish guys in the UFC? Diego hasn't proven he can finish b-fighters in the UFC. How can he hang with a guy like Garcia yet he can't finish John Alessio? When Diego proves he can submit somebody better than Brian Gassaway then I'll be convinced he belongs anywhere near the same ring as Matt Hughes, GSP, or BJ Penn. Remember Diego only won TUF because Nate Quarry was injured. And look what happened to him when he was fed to a champ.

I used to train with Toronto BJJ under Wagnney Fabiano (one of GSP's old trainers). I haven't trained in about a year though.

I am not going to give specifics why , im just gonna state who i think wins.
Hughes will beat Penn. Hughes is the best right now until he fights GSP who , if he trains the right way, will beat Hughes, however coming off an injury, he may be too cautious and Hughes could capitalize on that.

I think Deigo's downfall is his own arrogance and to me , he cant finish.

I don't see anyone beating Liddell for a long time.

Silvia will lose as soon as they get a heavywieght that doesnt try to punch with a guy with 8 ft arms. He has no defense against a ground attack.

Swick will get pummelled by a Loiseau elbow or 6, Loiseau is to quick for "quick". I was disappointted in Loiseau when he fought Franklin. I didn't feel he showed up, he fought Franklins fight instead of the way he usually fought.

One of Franklin's greater skills is getting people to fight his fight. He controls things very well from good footwork and never overcommitting.

As for Swick, you might very well be right, but I'm still hoping (even though Loiseau is Canadian). Swick has really surprised me his last two fights, I expected both to be a greater challenge for him. Either way, its win win, cuz I like them both.

And Diego, damn it, as much as I would like him to start losing, he keeps not doing it. But he's on the upper tier now, I expect his next fight will be against one of the big three (GSP, Penn, or Hughes), so we'll see if he's the real deal or not. He did come in better conditioned than Parisyan (sp?), but he shouldn't expect that advantage over Hughes or GSP. Penn maybe, but only judging from Penn's last fight.
