| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/24/2006 10:51:21 PM | Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie they might like you ?
Anyone can call you by your name... however pet names are used by those that feel they have a particular closeness to you that others don't have. It's not meant to irk you, but to let you know verbally where you are in their heart. exactly, and although I wouldn't use them right off the bat, as two people get closer and more intimate, it's fairly natural.
However, and not being American, there are certain areas, and others, of the southern US, (even rural areas up here), that the terms are used as every day lingo, just due to the friendly nature of the people from those areas, "folksy", "down to earth" etc. I've received lots of emails with those terms and .... no biggee.
I've lately even gotten used to being called brat as a term of endearment... yep, I use that too as a term of endearment, i know of one in particular that personifies that term

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/25/2006 12:54:02 AM | Not just guys do it.
I know I am guilty of it... I tend to use hun, dear & love alot But part of that is cultural, I was born in Britian and most people I know use pet names. Again this is with people I actually know & interact with regularly.
Although I admit I hate being called Babe or Baby by someone that is basically a stranger, unless you know me use my name.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/25/2006 6:02:45 AM | I tried to send duckie60, a message....but she does not accept messages from my country...lol
I want to simply write "Hey Baby" and that was all....lol
I am guesing several other sarcastic people already have done so.
Then i notice she talks about dating, and yet her profile says married.....hmmm Not seperated, divorced, single, but actually married.
Guess her hubby is a very understanding guy.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/25/2006 6:06:28 AM | It is uncomfortable to be called that by someone you don't know. I think its because they can't remember your name lol.
If its someone who isn't my boyfriend, I ask them to call me by my name the first time they call me "hun", etc.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/25/2006 6:30:26 AM | I am called baby girl, babe, babydoll, carebear and sweetie. I LOVE THEM ALL beacuse all of them are said by people who KNOW me and love me and carry me in their heart.
When a stranger calls me by one of those names, it can be uncomfortable....
I ALSO call those who are close to me baby, babe, sweetie, etc.....it really is just another way to show that you care for someone....IMO.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/25/2006 7:01:09 AM | Mel Gibson, when pulled over for drunk driving, called a female cop, "sugartits". Maybe he should have tried one of the aforesaid. | |

Maybe they forgot your name, or they are talking to a couple of women with the same name. It is how I feel -- they don't want to remember all the names all women around them. Hard to find someone with my name, but still, they just don't want to bother to remember it.
When it's in LTR, I guess it's OK...................but up front it sucks

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/25/2006 12:52:20 PM | | Y'know, some of the terms really don't bother me, even from a stranger. I guess it depends on the circumstances. Say I hold the door open for a guy carrying an armload of stuff, and he says, "Thanks, darlin'." That doesn't offend me in the least, I even kinda like it. Maybe I'd feel differently if I were on a first or second date with a guy and that's all he called me, and never used my name. Different circumstances, different reactions. | |

Exactly, I grew up in the south and call a lot of people hun. It is not meant to offend anyone its just a term that is used a lot.

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 12:44:08 PM | | Guys are dogs, they call you these names because they want sex once the sex is over they go back to calling you by your real name They think calling you pet names make you melt and say wow give him what he wants, it use to work but with age that gullible thinking goes away. Men think women are stupid call her pet name give her flowers and she will do anything we want "NOT" | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 12:50:09 PM | Right on Avivagirl... well maybe not.
perhaps habit? terms of affection? maybe i know its crazy to think... but maybe the guy acually likes your unconfident self? Heck... calls you baby around other girls... they KNOW your with him? Off the market?
I mean maybe its all about sex... like everything us guys do... yeah... but maybe they guy likes you... not romantically always just his way of letting you know...

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 7:32:22 PM | I usually tend to use 'petnames' for just about anyone. I find it's usually easier to ease into a conversation and puts others at ease and gives a playful genuwine interest. I have found some people do not like pet names or even slang or other short forms on the net. I don't use those one much, the ones i choose are based on the person's online identity asto how i perceive them thru their posts etc.
As far as the real name thing goes my reason is top secret

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 8:33:15 PM | | Does it matter what we call you ,as long as it is said in a loving way? Babes, your breakfast is done, honeyyyyy im homeeeee and sweetie,i love you~~~~~.The context of the sentence must fit also however,as we could be saying something else like, damn "baby",i know your feet are tired cause you been running thru my mind all day! Or look at that honey, isnt she a sweetie~~~~~ Id say the latter now so dont kick me too hard in the shins, | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 8:59:23 PM | | I tend to call women of interest to me Darlin. Not strangers, women in the holding pattern of friendship. In relationship, it will be a pet name unique to who they are. Sweetie , baby.. dumb stupid and generic. I had one girlfriend I called Toes, cause she could write with her feet. Another was 6.4,, she was all leg...yup..Legs. If Im calling you by your first name, you may as well be my best friends mother. | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 9:09:47 PM | I see there are different reactions on this one, my personal experience with any LOCAL guy that used those"pet names" were ones I ended up not being able to trust them as far as I could spit.
I have heard "darlin" alot in the south, even by the waitress at the restaurant that took my order so I took that as a southern custom just. If a man I barely knew called me a pet name I would be leary of him in how flirty he was..those terms are usually seen as meant to NOT slip and say the wrong name I feel. I would be much more impressed if the guy used my name in conversation as I would feel he was paying attention. I just can't help feeling those pet names by a guy are so "generic", but I REALLY dislike if old women call me "hun"..what is up with that? I also caught a coworker calling me "dear" in talking of work related stuff on the job. He is married to an older woman so maybe she just says that alot to him and it's a habit for him now>?

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 9:14:27 PM | | The reason i dont like pet names is sometimes the guy doesnt even know me and he starts off with sweetie or gorgeous or hi beautiful/ It bothers me because i know that the guy probably isnt sincere and is saying it to many others on here I just like it to be kept real. | |

| Why do guys say baby - honey - sweetie Posted: 8/26/2006 9:16:39 PM | I don't like it either when I don't even know the person. If I get a mail from someone I've never talked to before and it starts with "Hey babe" I delete it. I don't know this person and I don't appreciate it.
To me babe or baby is reserved for someone I'm on an intimate level with. I'm my bf's babe, not a strangers (clarification, if I have a bf).
Sweetie I don't mind. To me it means that the person finds me sweet so that's okay. I actually call a lot of my customers sweetie (I tend bar sometimes), and I know those people and if they are sweet, I will call them sweet.
I'm wondering if the men who do that think we will be so flattered and they will have a better chance of getting to know us?
I've noticed that there have not been a good explanation from a man why they do that. I hope to see one soon.
